The Buffalo Bills made history Wednesday by hiring the NFL's first female full-time coach, naming Kathryn Smith as a special teams quality control coach.
Smith served as the administrative assistant to head coach Rex Ryan this season after working for 12 years for the New York Jets, including the final six under Ryan when he was the Jets' head coach.

I dunno, what the hell does a quality control coach do ? If it's a clerical position, I say OK fine, she
might be qualified so give the woman the opportunity.

Wow... pretty sexist.

Personally I think she'd have to be really good at what she does to welcome the extra attention this is going to bring a team that needs as few distractions as possible. Not that she'll be a distraction to the team directly, but the media is going to be all over this & bring extra attention where there needn't be.

Please. This is going to be the one news flurry on it ... if you can even call this a flurry.

And yes, very sexist.

Idk, I think it'll be a fun piece that everyone will want to get some early quotes on for the sake of history but will then find just how wicked boring a story the girl helping with special team scout duties in Buffalo actually is and we'll go back to real football in no time.

After thinking about it, you're probably right. Probably play out before the season even starts.

How about I amend it by saying it's OK along as she is not actually coaching football ? You wouldn't call that sexist would you ?

I don't give so much a rip that she's a she, but I am hesitant to embrace a coach who's never played the game. I felt the same way, and generally still do, about Todd Haley. It's a seed of doubt that's ever present in the locker room and practice field between the players and that coach.

Unless you've examined her qualifications & determined they are not up to par... yeah. Very much so. In fact sexist is putting it lightly.

The woman played lacross, and that's it, now she might be perfecly qualified to coach lacross, mens or women. I dunno if you've played any football, but see it's a contact sport. You can't pick it up at a Holiday Inn seminar. Putting somebody out there with no experience playing football to coach even high school kids and run something like an Oklahoma drill would be very difficult and awkward for her, and forget about doing that with grown men in the NFL. Maybe the woman can review film, and go scout other teams. They will do what they have to do to minimize her physical proximity with the players. She'll get a year or so doin that, then she can write her book, make lots of money about being the first official NFL female coach and the league will get some brownie points with the female fans. That's what it's all about anyway.

Ok.

Check out as many "coaches" sections of teams on NFL.com you'll see a lot of "quality control" positions. Most of them are "intern" positions. Many of them have no coaching or playing experience at all. They're there to learn to coach NFL football.

You should check out Eric Mangin's career path.

She's been with Rex Ryan for 7 years. This has nothing to do with the league or Bills and brownie points. 100% Rex.

She's basically Ryans administrative assistant, and far from being a real football coach, you know the kind that coach blocking and tackling,i.e, a real coach. It is what is, and it's not what it isn't. Now she may very well be an important, maybe almost an invaluable assistant to Ryan.
But I can only offer my congratulations to Ms Smith on her promotion, to what is surely a signifiant salary increase, and her new job title.

Don't the Cardinals have a female coach? They are in the NFC Championship game. Maybe this is all Rex needs to get over the hump.

Eric Mangini

Mangini first caught the attention of Bill Belichick, under whom he would coach for nine seasons, as a 23-year-old ball boy with the Cleveland Browns. His work ethic impressed Belichick, and the head coach was instrumental in promoting Mangini to a public relations intern, and later, an offensive assistant.[4]

It's Wiki, but it matches the narrative I've heard time & again. He was a copy boy, worked in the mail room & Belichick was like, "You'd make a great coach." Sounds like Rex sees the same thing in Kathryn Smith.

The Bills made history this week by hiring Kathryn Smith as a full-time assistant coach, but Rex Ryan was careful to check with the team that blazed the trail first.

Via Zach Buchanan of the Arizona Republic, Ryan called Cardinals coach Bruce Arians to talk about his experience with training camp intern Jen Welter before finalizing the move.

“The big thing was, ‘Was it a distraction in any way, shape or form?’ ” Arians said. “And it wasn’t. How did it work out, the logistics and everything, we talked about that. I could tell he was very interested in doing it and I’m real glad he did.”

Arians is a big proponent of Welter after her experience there this summer, and recommended her to Ryan as well.

“I talked to Rex and I recommended Jen Welter extremely high,” Arians said. “I think all new coaches should look at her, because her resume is outstanding. I was really happy for Rex that he did it. I think more women should be in the league coaching.”

Are we sure about that? A Crocodile Dundee gender check might be needed.

Seriously though, if she can coach she can coach. End of story
