June 1 Free Agent Cuts

The Giants and Kurt Warner, the two-time NFL MVP, are expected to agree on a two-year contract that will pay the quarterback $3 million in 2004, including a $1.5 million signing bonus.

Warner's deal will cost the Giants $2.25 million against the 2004 cap. He was released by the Rams Tuesday afternoon after six seasons and two Super Bowls. The Giants are expected to allow Warner to compete with rookie Eli Manning for the starting job in training camp.

The Associated Press reports Carolina Panthers rookie WR Drew Carter (knee) tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee Wednesday, June 2, and will likely miss the 2004 season. Carter injured himself while running during Wednesday's morning practice. An MRI later confirmed Carter had re-torn his surgically repaired knee, according to a team spokesman. Carter has now torn his left ACL twice and his right ACL once.

Carter was a 5th rounder.

Thats extremely disappointing to hear. Heres to no Texans going out with an injury, especially those before the season even starts.

I wouldn't want any injuries, but to tell you the truth, I'd rather the injuries happen now instead of after the season starts. If they happen now, the team has time to find replacements. If they happen after the season starts, the team is left trying to play catch up.

The Falcons have had injury bug the last year. What am I saying? We had the largest injury bug.

Injury Bug? Last year it was an injury swarm!

It's now official that we will be seeing some familiar faces in new places this season. The NY Giants announced the signing of QB Kurt Warner today, and also the Dallas Cowboys have announced the signing of 41 year old veteran QB Vinny Testaverde. Not to be outdone, the Super Bowl champion New England Patriots signed CB Terrell Buckley yet again. Feel free to add more June 1 additions as they come in.

I'll betcha that the G-men are seeing this as a protective move for Eli. I can see Warner being the starter for about half the season and then Coughlin pulling the switch (with Warner's play not being the biggest factor). It gives Eli a safety blanket if things look like they are getting too hot for him on the field.
Also, it helps the NYG front office cover themselves from the NY media and fans that would pretty much crucify them if Eli comes out of the gate and falls on his face.
I think Eli has excellent potential and if they can keep him alive and well and build around him, he will do well. I just think that the drama around the whole draft day trade and the comments by all parties have dug him a perception hole that he needs the NYG front office to help him dig out of. Picking up Warner and letting him "compete for the starting job" may help them out with this.
