Javier Arenas CB, Alabama?????

cj5776

Waterboy
Two of the last three corners drafted by the texans (fred bennett and antwaun molden)had the prototypical size and speed for NFL corners, but they have yet to show consistent playmaking ability. Last year Glover Quin slipped to the fourth round due to concerns about his speed. However he quickly worked his way on the field with solid cover skills and fundamentally sound tackling ability. Hopefully the Texans will continue to draft players who have proven to show they can make plays, even if they lack the ideal numbers.

Arenas will not be drafted very high due to tweaking a hammy at the combine and being 5'9. Who cares. He would be a steal in the 3rd. Even if he only plays in the nickel and returns kicks, he would replace the grit DRob brought to the table and take our defense to the physical dominating level we showed glimpses of last year.

If Kubiak/Smith/Bush/Gibbs like Quin and Reeves as our 1 and 2 guys then I say go for it. I don't think Arenas will be anything more than a nickle corner in the NFL and KR/PR. I'm not saying that those guys aren't valuable but that I think the players we have on the team already are better suited for that spot than being the 1.

The great thing about how NFL teams work is that they know their team and draft guys for specific roles on their team. I think Smith said that they felt Quin would be a great nickle guy coming in and fit that role for them, but really kind of outplayed that spot (or at least the other guys on the team). Teams don't try and hit the homerun #1 guy everytime like the fans due. Example, Kevin Walter - fits this team pefectly for a #2 but never a #1. Fans too often just think about fantasy football and points instead of what a player does for the team as a whole. [wow that kind of went off topic]

Bottom line, if they're okay drafting Arenas in the 4th-5th (let's say) to be a nickle cb, pr, kr... then that's great. I don't think he's going to be the lockdown CB we all want, or at least I want. Joe Haden or Kyle Wilson really might fit that bill. Could see another draft with 2 CB's taken to fit different spots on our team (or one possibly a cb/s tweener). Coffee break :spin:

I think we are saying a lot of the same things. The scenario I want to throw out…

If the Texans spend their first two picks on needs other than CB, i.e. RB and DT, (not forcing themselves to draft a CB) I think by using a third or later pick on a CB, we could draft a nickel that fits the team like the Walter example you gave. I believe Arenas could be that type of fit, his college production on the highest level should not be ignored. And thus, he would make Quin and Reeves even better starters.

The bottom line is, as of right now, McCain, Bennett, and Molden are the only candidates for the nickel spot. I believe Areans would be a much better fit. Don’t rule out enormous college production just because the guy is 5’9.

McCain we know very little about, Molden has been injured but has upside, Bennett looked awesome his rookie season and then trailed off substantially. Too many unknowns. Arenas would be AWESOME especially with his return capabilities.

With that said, I'd rather draft a #1 that pushes either Reeves or Quin into the 3rd spot. I think you'd have better overall players at each level. Now I know that's easier said than done because EVERY team wants that!
