Thrill of the hunt
By Nick Schenck

Center, Texas is nowhere near the middle of the state. In fact, it’s less than a half hour from the Louisiana border. But as far as hunting in Texas is concerned, this is one of the central locations.

With far more wildlife than residents, Center offers the outdoor enthusiast a wide variety of hunting and fishing options. Driving north on US-59 from Houston, it takes a little more than three hours to arrive in this small town, where the pace of life is relatively slow, the sense of community is strong and the living is modest.

Which explains why, when a professional football player drove into town earlier this summer in a four-car caravan, including a tricked-out Ford Excursion and an H2 Hummer, it created quite a buzz.

“We came to the light in the main part of town, and there was a cop at the red light as we turned,” outside linebacker Jason Babin said. “He just looked at us and you could tell he was thinking, ‘Well, you ain’t from around here.’”

Since then, Babin has met the townspeople and realized he has a lot in common with them, namely a love for hunting. And that’s a good thing, because Babin is in the process of opening a hunter’s paradise on the 435-acre tract of land he purchased this off-season on the outskirts of Center.

Named “Babin Ranch,” the land has been stocked with a variety of exotic animals, such as zebra, rams, antelope, wildebeests and kudu, as well as deer, elk and buffalo among others. There is also a lodge, built from the timber on the property, complete with three bedrooms, two-and-a-half baths, a bunk house and a game room. Babin hopes to host hunting parties of up to 10 people beginning in early September.

Steve McKinney is from Center I bet he had something to do with Babin buying there. When he was in High school Mckinney spent a lot of time back in center.

I don't know anything about center but I bought some land at the beginning of this year just north of Kerrville for our family to hunt on the animals there are phenominal. We just got back Tuesday from a 4 day weekend and we saw so many whitetail, exotics, hogs, and turkeys. I will be going back in 2 weeks to do my first hunt on the property...good thing about exotics and hogs is that you can hunt them year round. Man I can't wait for deer season and football season...I love winter!

you've never heard of "fluffers" in porn?....lol

yeah, ive heard of them. actually the first thing that popped in my mind. but seriously, is babin now gonna be "The Hunter".

what's a fluff piece?

you've never heard of "fluffers" in porn?

well a fluff piece could be thought of as a metaphorical porn fluffer. it's an article written to get "a rise", if you will, out of the fan base and keep the fans "excited" throughout the drudgingly dull time that is the off-season. synonomus with a "hype" piece/article, same PR intentions.

It would be nice if he turned into the hunter....applying a little more pressure on the QB this year would help tremendously. Hopefully all of the pieces will be in place this year so he will have the opportunity. As far as hunting of game goes...I think it's cool that he's into it. He just better watch those damn PETA people...celebs who are up front about outdoor activities tend to get a lot of negative feedback from those wackos. It would be funny as hell if Babin got all wierded out like Ted Nugent on the Spirit of the Wild show...I would forever be a fan!..lol

so are we gonna have us a deer stand on the sidelines for babin to sit in? now that would be cool.

We also got jaguars and colts. We usually seem to kill the jags while the colts have been hard to hunt down. But don't worry, we've been working oon our hunting skills and hope to get that trophy colt(s) this year. It'll look good next to the 4 (hopefully by seasons end it'll be 6) jags we got on the mantle.
:howdy:

HMMMM...and I thought the zebras were off-limits. Isn't there a big fine if you hit one? Zebras should be pretty easy to hunt though. They don't seem to have very good vision, and thier hearing seems to be suspect also. Sometimes they can be so deaf as to not hear someone yelling right in thier ear. They also don't appear to be very intelligent, because often they don't know when to get out of the way. Makes for an easy target. Doesn't hardly seem worth it.

Maybe he hunts them for a little poetic justice. Call me for a personal foul will you...fine, I'll eat your cousin this weekend.

I don't hunt, but I doubt they are off limits, he has the pricing on his site for zebras, I would think if it was illegal he wouldn't be posting it all over the web...

He was making a zebra/referee joke.

The basic rule in Texas is if it ain't native and isn't on the endangered list you can hunt it. Texas has become one of the best places for the restoration of animal herds in the world. As of a couple years ago there were 7 species of exotics which had a greater populous in Texas than in their native ranges. Several species are now being exported back to their native areas from Texas. Axis deer are one of them and are one of the prettiest deer around, one of the hardest to bow hunt and better than beef (both taste and leaner):

I thought it was a nice article. I remember when I lived in Montana at the age of 12. (Those huge Muleys) We were hunting in 3 groups of two and I was in the middle without a weapon. Anyway as I was walking along, my uncle is signaling to my cousin and me to "Get out of the way". My cousin and I thought he was saying "Are you okay." So we gave him a big thumbs up. We did not see or hear that buck walking right behind us (about 10 yards). I can't remember if the deer ran away or not, because I don't think my uncle shot him. To this day I am still amazed at how that deer could walk so quietly in the woods.

I am sure that the hunting venture will be a success as long as People Eating Tasty Animals does not show up.
