I know I might be a little bias but what are the chances that we might be able to get JaMarcus Russell? Ahhhh LSU 6-6" 257 Lazer rocket arm hmm thats what I'd like to see in a future QB

Hard to tell.

Some mocks, I've seen him go as high as #1 overall, others I've seen him drop to Miami at 9.

A lot of what he does at the combine could dictate where he winds up.

In my own mock, based off needs, it could very well happen. I see the Raiders taking Calvin Johnson of Georgia Tech #1 overall and the Lions taking Joe Thomas, with Quinn falling to the Browns at 3, Tampa going with either Gaines Adams or Jamaal Anderson, LaRon Landry (Ed Reed clone) to Arizona at 5, Alan Branch to the Skins at 6, and Minnesota taking the best available safety/cb at 7, which would drop both Peterson and Russell in to Houston's lap.

Perhaps that's just a pipe dream though.

sounds like you've done you're homework alot more than I have, I just think he'd be a great assett to the texans

it might not be very likely, but it'd deffinately possible. russell is considered by many to be very raw and that might push the top picks to select someone who's more refined and in their opinions a "sure fire" pick. as with toro's possibility, i think if russell gets past oakland (which is very possible considering the moss & porter situations), he's likely to fall to the later part of the top 10.

raiders signed aaron brooks last year and appear to still hope walter can play ... still the obvious frontrunner however since al davis wants a vertical offense and enjoys the rawest of talents. you never know with the raiders though, they could pick anyone
lions have kitna who put up 4000+ yards and have josh mccown as a backup, but are a consideration for russell. recent drafts might have them forced to go defense, however with millen around he could very well pick CJ, peterson, quinn or russell ... they're as crazy to predict as the raiders
browns might look to quinn or AP, although they're probably scouting russell pretty thoroughly. if russell gets here, he'd be a heavy consideration since the best qb they have is charlie frye
bucs have simms, gradkowski, rattay, & mccown (not likely)
arizona has leinhart (no chance)
skins have campbell & brunell (almost no chance)
minnesota has tarvaris jackson & brad johnson (almost no chance)

the top 3 are where russell is a major target. if he's not gone by 3, he'll probably fall atleast to the texans at 8. calvin johnson will go top 3 so that eliminates one spot, and brady quinn might be higher than russell on some teams' draft charts. it's not likely as i said, but not out of the question.

ok question is, if he does fall to us will we pick him up? Are the Texans going to feel that they need a new QB?

that's the question on everyone's mind, but noone has an answer. kubiak's track record says that he's not going to pick a qb in the first (or even the first day), however shanahan just did it and kubiak's learned what it's like to be on his own ... that might make kubiak more apt to focus in that area after seeing his offense struggle. there's also the debate on whether or not carr stays, but i dont think it's as important as folks make it seem since carr only has 2 years left on his extension and is relatively up there in years (will be 30 when his contract expires). a replacement is probably going to be wanted through the draft regardless of what we do with carr in the immediate future.

basic answer is "i dont know", but IMO it's pretty likely we'd grab russell if he fell to us at 8 because of future needs and obvious BPA.

edit: please dont quote me on this one. =p

He is still very raw and unpolished, which is why I think a team looking for a QB would go with Quinn first.. I can't envision him falling beyond the Dolphins at 9 though.

I got to see some of Walter's play at Arizona State, and I honestly do think the Raiders could have the vertical offense that Al Davis salivates over. Problem was, he had two malcontents at WR who stopped trying altogether and backups who are backups for a reason.. Also, that offensive line is a pathetic mess, which leads me to believe that if Johnson's not the pick, Thomas MIGHT be, but I can't see them spending a #1 overall on a OLineman. Thus, I think that Johnson, who is a quicker and taller Larry Fitzgerald (who Al Davis LOVED but was talked out of selecting), is a can't miss pick and one who fits a need moreso than a QB would.

Lions have kitna who put up 4000+ yards and have josh mccown as a backup, but are a consideration for russell. recent drafts might have them forced to go defense, however with millen around he could very well pick CJ, peterson, quinn or russell ... they're as crazy to predict as the raiders.

With Matt Millen, who the hell knows where they'll go.

Honestly speaking, what the Lions NEED is Offensive Line help and defense, specifically in the secondary.

As you mentioned, Kitna did throw for 4,000 yards and both Josh McCown and Dan Orlovski are better than advertised.

What is specific is the fact that last year the Lions secondary was a joke and their Oline couldn't block swiss cheese. Kitna was sacked I believe 50 + times last year and Kevin Jones had the worst statistical season of his career. Believe this or not, some mocks have had the Lions selecting a WR (how funny that'd be), although I actually think the Furrey- Williams duo is just fine. Nonetheless, based off needs, Thomas fills a big hole for them, unless they trade down for someone looking to get Quinn, Thomas, Russ or Peterson.

Browns might look to quinn or AP, although they're probably scouting russell pretty thoroughly. if russell gets here, he'd be a heavy consideration since the best qb they have is charlie frye

How lucky would Cleveland be here? Suppose Brady Quinn and Adrian Peterson both fall to 3.. The Browns really don't have an answer long term or for the present at QB and Ruben Droughns is... welll.. Ruben Droughns.

I think even IF Russell falls, this pick comes down to Quinn or Peterson (barring neither are taken), and the reason I pencil in Quinn is because the Browns not only need a QB, but they need a franchise face, which Brady will fill the role of.. The two determining factors that will play themselves out here are the friendship between Charlie Weis and Romeo Crennell, where Crennell will have an old friend to turn to, one who won't blow smoke up his ass about Quinn's high points and low points. It also doesn't hurt that Quinn is an Ohio native, who can be a popular draw around the state and steal some of the thunder from Palmer in Cincinnati.

Bucs have simms, gradkowski, rattay, & mccown (not likely)

Depending on how sold they are on Chris Simms (they just re-signed him, so they must be somewhat sold that he'll be able to recover from his injuries last year), the Bucs COULD go with Russell here.. But, I think they've got too many other holes to fill. I can see them addressing the QB in Rounds 2 or 3, but with the top pick, they need to get some help on that aged defense. Never thought we'd say that 5 years ago huh? Bucs need defensive help in Round One.. Age can break a team REAL quick. Also, in the Peterson watch, there's zero chance they take Peterson, with Williams as their HB of the here, now and long term future.

Arizona has leinhart (no chance)

Dead on. The Cardinals will not be selecting Leinart, nor will they be selecting Adrian Peterson (there's a lot of locals here who are suggesting they SHOULD).. And if by stroke of luck, Calvin Johnson falls, there's equally the same chance Arizona takes him as I have of winning the lottery.

Skins have campbell & brunell (almost no chance)

I guarantee you, the Skins won't take Russell or Peterson here.

Minnesota has tarvaris jackson & brad johnson (almost no chance)

See above. The Viking FO is in love with Jackson and also really favor Chester Taylor. No chance here.

So.. by my assessment, one or BOTH could fall to Houston at 8 and it wouldn't surprise me. Honestly, I could see someone maybe trading up to get him, but with noone having a second first rounder to make the deal worthwhile, I see everyone standing pat.

I know some here will say "no chance" of one or the other falling to 8, but what chance did Matt Leinart have of falling to Arizona at this time last year?

We have a chance at almost anyone other than maybe Calvin Johnson cause we are not going to trade up to number 1 overall. Eventhough I doubt CJ goes number 1 but he is very talented. Jamarcus is a very good player, but I am in the vast minority of thinking QB is not a need that needs to be addressed in the first round. My first two picks are starters from day 1 that can come in and make plays for us from the start.

Prior to the combine, it's really hard to speculate who goes where just yet, but what the heck ........

raiders - A lot has been made of Al Davis' refusal to take a QB in the first round. He probably won't take Russell here, but for a guy that can throw 80 yards, you just never know about Davis. For the record, I'm thinking he'll take either Calvin Johnson or Joe Thomas. The Robert Gallery experience might cause the Raiders to shy away from Thomas.

lions - I don't believe the Lions think they have their QB of the future at the moment. I also don't think their O-line is in very bad shape. They could use some help, but not at LT. Jeff Backus is a very capable tackle. They sure won't take Calvin Johnson - I think Millen would be lynched before Day Two of the draft. They probably won't feel compelled to go for Peterson, since KJ was productive this year. Alan Branch is off their board, unless they feel like they can't re-sign Redding. Third pick might be a little high for either Hall or Landry. Gaines Adams or JaMarcus Russell is a very real possibility here.

browns - I think they will probably be looking at either Alan Branch or Adrian Peterson here. I don't think they're ready to give up on Frye yet, though they might be in the market for a 2nd or 3rd round QB. Leon Hall might be a possibility here as well.

bucs - given Gruden's comments about finding a playmaker at the QB position, he may be looking QB in the draft. I think Quinn probably has a better chance at being taken by Gruden than Russell, however, as Gruden probably won't see Russell as quite as much a fit, given Gruden's past offensive scheming. Gruden could also take Joe Thomas here. I think it's probably even more likely than QB, but you never know. If Alan Branch is still on the board here, they migt go that route. I don't think Russell goes here.

cards - If Joe Thomas is still here, I think they'll take him here. The Leonard Davis situation could be a factor in this, but early indications are that they consider Davis to be a disappointment and will not seek to re-sign him in the offseason. Even if they do, they might try and bolster their line play with Thomas. They're definitely not looking at Russell or Quinn, nor will they be looking to pay 1st round money to a RB when they have Edge for another year or two of productive play. If they decide to go defense, I really don't have a feel for who they would choose, but there's a good chance Branch and Adams are off the board by this point.

redskins - They don't have a 2nd or 3rd round pick this year, IIRC, so they need to make the first rounder count. They might trade down, but nothing about Snyder's draft dealings to this point would lead me to believe that. I think they'll look for an offensive playmaker or a corner. No Russell again.

vikings - Tarvaris Jackson is going to get a lot of latitude in Minnesota for a couple years at least. The Vikings like him a lot. No Russell here. No secondary pick, most likely. Jarrett might be a good choice for them, as they have a burner in Williamson, but they need a solid, every-down, go-across-the-middle WR. Jarrett can fit that mold, I think. Two WRs in the top 10 though ...... I don't know. Maybe. Aside from that, I think they're set at RB, QB, OL, and secondary. The LB from Penn State or Jarrett is my prediction.

So that probably leaves JaMarcus Russell and/or Adrian Peterson there for us at #8. It also probably leaves us our choice of either Leon Hall, Laron Landry, or Reggie Nelson to address the secondary. If we aren't addressing the OL, I think secondary is the next biggest gaping wound, so I'd like to see Hall here. You can get a top safety in the second or third rounds, whereas top corners are a little harder to find past the first round. So if they pass on one of the safeties, I'll understand. Landing Russell would probably hurt in the pocketbook, since he'll get first round money and therefore be expected to contribute right away. We don't have enough playmakers on this team to be able to sit one for a year to develop, but that's exactly what needs to happen with any QB we get. This O-line sucks and I really don't want to see a repeat of the Carr developmental curve just because this team won't fix the line.

Russell would be an exciting pick, though. I'd be happy with it, albeit with concerns.

This early in the off-season, it would be nothing more than a stab in the dark. I think most these guys are right that it could be a possibiltiy he's there, but there's the combine and FA that comes before the draft so, some of these teams might have project holes, already filled by then. wait till march and then it'll be ALOT clearer.
