Jack Pardee Diagnosed with Terminal Cancer

Pardee was a helluva football man. And anyone who discounts the R&S he ran needs to look around the NFL. It's in use everywhere.

Just read this also. Very sad indeed. Jack is a good guy and was a great offensive mind. He was probably too nice to be an effective HC however he did manage to get the Oilers to the playoffs almost every season he was here.
 
That is very sad news. You hate to hear this and it must be sad to know your time in limited to days, weeks, months.
 
Talk about a man who went somewhere with his career. Pardee started coaching 7's in schools too small to field a full team and finished in the NFL. Wow!
 
I still remember the total feeling of elation I felt the day that Pardee was announced as the HC of the Oilers. After the embarrassment that the Glanville era degenerated into (IMO), I had a genuine sense of pride that Pardee was now the coach of my team.

Still think the world of him.

Very sad. I loved the Gamblers, I still have my Gamblers baseball hat and some old ticket stubs.

Jack used to live down the street from me when I was in H.S. In fact, the neighborhood kids (myself included) used to play baseball and football in a field that backed-up to Pardee's horse corral. So, home runs were hit into his yard.

I'd only discount is as a pure offense where you do not carry a FB or TE so you severely limit your options. It cannot run out the clock to protect a lead, as we know all too well.

Hate to hear this news about Pardee. :(
 
I loved watching his teams' gunslinger-coached mentality. He will be missed.

As an aside, the article mentioned that he had extensive melanoma surgery/treatment. Then he had a recurrence of the melanoma 20 years later. It is interesting to note that, despite lack of true specifics of this new cancer incident, of all the tumors that can metastasize (spread) to the gallbladder (even many years later), melanoma is by far the most common, accounting for more than 50% of gallbladder metastases. It makes me think that this could possibly be the case with Pardee.

HOUSTON (KTRK) -- Sad news for football fans in Houston. Eyewitness Sports has learned that former Houston Oilers and University of Houston coach Jack Pardee has died after a long battle with cancer.

I recently spoke with Pardee's friends and former teammates at Texas A&M and they told me he faced last year's diagnosis of terminal gall bladder cancer with the same traits that made him an All Pro NFL linebacker and successful head coach.

He played six-man football at Christoval High School in west-central Texas, near San Angelo, before moving on to Texas A&M. Bryant became the Aggies' coach in 1954 and moved their preseason camp to desolate Junction, about 100 miles northwest of San Antonio.

The state endured a severe drought and an historic heat wave that year, but Bryant worked his team through the brutal conditions and refused to allow water breaks in an effort to toughen players. Pardee was one of 35 players who made it through to the end of the 10-day camp without quitting.

Pardee played three seasons at Texas A&M and was the 14th overall pick in the 1957 NFL draft by Los Angeles. He played for the Rams from 1957-64, sat out a year to deal with his melanoma, and played seven more seasons. He finished his playing career with the Washington Redskins in 1973.

He was selected as an All-Pro in 1963 and 1971.

He coached in the World Football League for one season before moving on to NFL coaching. He was the Chicago Bears' head coach from 1975-77. He coached the Redskins from 1978-80 and was fired after Washington went 6-10.

He served as San Diego's defensive coordinator for one season, then returned to Texas to coach the USFL's Houston Gamblers.

When the USFL disbanded in 1987, Pardee became the coach at the University of Houston and brought along the fast-paced "Run-and-Shoot" offense that worked well with the Gamblers.

The NCAA levied severe sanctions on the program in 1988, the result of violations committed under previous coach Bill Yeoman. Houston was banned from playing in a bowl game for two years and banned from playing on television in the 1989 season.

But the Cougars led the nation in total offense (624.9 yards per game) and passing offense (511 yards per game) in 1989, and quarterback Andre Ware became the first black quarterback to win the Heisman Trophy. Houston finished 9-2 and ranked No. 14 in the nation.

Pardee became the coach of the NFL's Houston Oilers in 1990, and led the team to the playoffs in each of his first four seasons. Oilers owner Bud Adams traded star quarterback Warren Moon to Minnesota before the 1994 season, and Pardee resigned after a 1-9 start that year.

He ended his NFL coaching career with a record of 87-77.

The man really was a Texas football legend. I don't think he gets quite the credit he deserves for such an outstanding contribution to football.

One of the most amazing games ever was when everyone was wondering if the Coogs were for real and we played the Horns. We were down 40-20 and the beginning of the 4th quarter and... well... I'd given up all hope.

We won.

60-40.

I was at the game in Austin when UH destroyed them 66-15. My UT buddy and I were walking out of the stadium when an old lady came up to me, told me I should be ashamed of myself for being a Cougar fan, them whacked me with her umbrella. Good old classy Texas fans. I laughed so hard I had tears in my eyes as we kept walking.

The next year in the Dome was fun too. 47-9, I believe. I was keeping my eye on every old woman I saw with an umbrella though. :D

I texted my brother about Jack Pardee's death, and he reminded me of the time my father gave Jack a ride home from the gas station down the road from us since we lived around the corner. I had forgotten all about that.
 
The first time I saw Jack Pardee on the field was when Walter Payton and his Bears came to the Dome in the mid-70's and were whipped by our Oilers and Billy white shoes Johnson. I didn't know till later that this was a Jack Pardee coached team...in any case, he's been in my "nfl fan life" for as long as I can remember. Class Man, great Character person. May he rest in peace.
