Mike Mayock, of the NFL Network, reports University of Oregon RB Jonathan Stewart (toe) has a big toe injury that MRIs are recommending surgery to correct. He faces a four-to-six month recovery with the surgery.

Ah, don't underestimate the power of the toe. You need it to cut, push off, take off, run, basically do anything that an RB might need to do.

(stating the obvious here, I know, and not trying to insult your intelligence)

It could end up being an expensive toe, though, if he slides at all.

I know what you mean, but I haven't heard of many toes being career threating.
 
I wonder how this effects the FO thinking, my guess is not very much, they seem to be a long view group of people that won't mind waiting if they think Stewart is the BPA.

the Bills drafted Willis McGahee #23 overall in 03 & he tore his acl in the Hurricanes bowl game.

my best guess is that the he (Jonathan Stewart) goes to the Chargers with the 27th overall selection :shades:

Yeah, but how do you think the Bills pick of McGahee turned out? I know it wasn't all health related, but I don't think he turned out to be what they hoped.

However, you may very well be right about the Bolts. Even if the more pessimistic of the reports I've seen indicate a 6 month recovery time, so it's not nearly as bad as it could be.

I dont see ant reason why the bolts would take 1st rd RB, even if Stewart is there. I imagine that they wait til the 3rd at the very earliest to replace Turner. While they dont have many needs they still have more pressing areas than 2nd string RB.
 
Well no way was Kubes going to use a first round on a RB anyway. I am more concerned with losing the 6th round if we sign Brown. I was hoping to get a 1000 yarder "just plug 'em in back".

Why would we lose a 6th rounder for Brown? He's an UFA. You must be thinking of the C Chris Myers we're looking at. He's a RFA that would cost us a 6th if we were to make an offer that wasn't matched by the Broncos.:)

Thanks for the correction but the focus should be on the "Plug in back that can get 1,000 yds in this offense" sarcasm.

We tried that. His name was Wali Lundy. He didn't work out.

LT is 29, been injured & unable to tote the rock when needed the most (AFC Championship) & Turner is gone via FA. having LT buys them time for a complete recovery & Stewart @ #27 is bpa. those are just a few reasons for you to digest (I dont see ant reason :elle: ).

The difference is that McGahee was most likely going to be a Texan until that injury. He was likely the #3 overall selection and considered an elite talent. Stewart does not seem like that and was already projected down towards 20. McGahee fell 20 spots, though I don't expect Stewart to fall that much, he will drop if this is true, and the Chargers could go with the Chiefs route and take a productive college RB in the first with a studly RB ahead of them.

I'm thinking the same thing. McFadden/Mendenhall likely gone, not liking this about Stewart so much + Did we sign Chris Brown as a FA or not??

Focuses me again towards OL, CB, OLB, DE (pass rusher) most likely in that order... maybe... I think...

Well, I should have said viable reasons. LT should be fine this season, and I know Turner left in FA since I kinda mentioned that in my post, and he may not be considered BPA by them if they down grade him for the injury.

Again I think they will get a guy just not in the 1st.

RB is NFL Draft Scouts #1 Need for the Chargers.

1. Running back: Hard saying that with LaDainian Tomlinson on the roster, but it's awfully thin behind him. RB Darren Sproles is currently No. 2, but he's more of a specialized back and makes his mark as a returner. Fullback Andrew Pinnock could carry some of the load, especially with coach Norv Turner's system minimizing the impact and playing time a fullback has.


before Stewarts injured toe it was thought he'd be off the board before the Chargers pick. I think in the final anaylsis this could prove to be a huge positive for him long term. Not only being 100% healthy, it will give him time mentally to prepare, see the speed of the game & learn the playbook. I promise you he won't forget the teams who passed on him either :wild:
 
I live in SD and I would be surprised to see them take a RB in the first round. Their WRs don't scare anyone and their line could be improved. I think you have to factor in $$$ as well. That would be a lot of $$$ at the RB position. I think Kenny Phillips might be a good fit for SD in rd then maybe a Ray Rice or someone similar in rd 2.

Being the Defensive kind of guy that I am, I hope he's not there at 18. I do think we'll draft a RB in the later rounds though.

Our offense was able to average 23.7 points per game in 07. Which is #12 in the league. FYI, we averaged 16.7 in 06. IMO, 23-24 points should be able to win more than 8 games.

Our defense allowed an average of 24 points per game in 07. We were in the top 10 in TD's allowed in both rushing and passing.

Gibbs alone will improve our running game, so let's concentrate on defense again.

BTW, the Super Bowl champs only averaged 23.3 points per game on offense. Kinda makes you think, huh? :thinking:

And they held the most prolific offense in the history of the NFL to a season low of 14 points. Giants had a superb pass rush that rattled Tom Brady- biggest reason why they held the Pats to so little points. (This going right along with your hope in building a stellar defense)

Not to mention, Eli is the man. (finally!)

I've followed the Chargers since they drafted Dan Fouts back in 73. oh yeah their HC was his back-up :cool:
 
Stewart will be lucky to be a first round pick. He will probably end up being an early 2nd round pick now. Teams hate injuries.

Agree. Just saw this this morning in a Mcclain report and they said a few months...4-5 I believe. That means, as he said, that a team like Dallas takes a flyer since they have Barber and 2 first rounders or he drops.

As I said above..most teams take a back like that as a game changer and need him right away. The only way I see him being taken in the 1st now is by a Cowboy type team that has a back. The Texans could try it and say they have Green/Brown and others until he gets healthy but I highly doubt it with all their needs. In the 2nd is more realistic for him.

Interesting thoughts. If Stewart could be ready by game one, I'd be ok. Or if Mendenhall were to somehow drop to #18, he'd be my pick. I still see Brown as a chain mover and 3rd down back that might pull a Dayne and give you good stats for part of a season. I hope he can do well and be the guy, just don't like putting the eggs in that basket (see A. Green). Taylor is a ? and Walker seems to be gone based on other threads. I still think we will see a back in draft.
