Isn't Ced Benson the Best way to help our Defense?

moot point with his contract coming up do we want to pay him the big bucks considering his good when healthy Bad when hurt performances thus far?

well davis' paycheck isn't written in my checkbook, so contracts have no bearing on what i said. whether the managment thinks davis is injury prone or not won't affect my opinoin of him because i have the luxury being in the peanut gallery  . that being said, i still would like to see the texans pick up a big bruiser in the draft, but no sooner than the third round. these seem to fit the mold and have the best chance of being around:

wouldn't be upset if we picked one of these guys up...
Lionel Gates
Noah Herron
Brandon Jacobs
Tristian McLendon

but would love to pick one of these guys up
Marion Barber III
Eric Shelton
Kay-Jay Harris

p.s. i'm realy hoping for shelton or barber :thumbup

Disclaimer: I know a lot more about basketball and baseball but consider myself pretty knowledgeable about football as well.

Well, the thread title makes my primary point, but I would also argue that Ced Benson is most likely to have the most net effect on both sides of the ball. If this has already been posted, my apologies b/c I didn't see it.

Primary points to support my argument:

1. I am Captain Obvious: ball control helps our defense, perhaps more than anything else. Particularly against the Peyton Mannings of the world.

2. DD is a good back, but we can't use him as a battering ram. He will wear down. Ced Benson projects to be a Eddie George type of a power back that will thrive between the tackles.

3. On offense, having a power runner will help Carr stay vertical.

4. Benson can pick up blitz packages and would help open things up for Andre Johnson.

5. If we were to draft a Defensive player, say Derrick Johnson, Dem Ware or Merriman, would they make as big as an impact on the defense? I am a huge DJ fan, but I'm not sure he's that sure or much of an upgrade over Wong or Greenwood, two proven NFL players. We do need depth and talent on the D Line, but I think we can get that in later rounds.

My first post after much lurking so let me have it!

Well, ****. About four days ago, I posted this as my first post here ever. After that, Johnny McClain comes out with his article about Ced Benson mayby slipping to 13 and how he might do wonders with ball control. This AM on sportsradio 610, McClain was again saying how Ced might be the best way we help our defense.

Do I know something I don't know? Am I channeling John McClain?
Can I get a cybercookie if we actually get Benson?

That's not what he was saying at all.... Good teams stacked the box against Benson, if we could get teams in the NFL to do that against us, it would open up the field for our receivers. One of our major problems right now is teams will sit back in the cover 2 and dare us to run, making it difficult for Carr to find an open receiver. If we have a viable threat to gash them for 6 or 7 yards a run while they sit in the cover 2, it will force them to recognize the run, thus opening up the field for AJ and whoever else is running a route. Makes sense to me, and I think of the top 3 backs, Benson fits Capers offensive mentality the best.

Great post. Totally agree. If Benson somehow slips down to 13 (still doubtful) the Texans would be extremely foolish to pass him up. He will help the defense more than any single defender the Texans can draft as well. And, I will also be ready to remind Lucky how wrong he was. :heh:

First of all, I would like everyone to look at my handle. As you can tell im a big fan of DD. I love watching him play, BUT I do think Ced Benson would be a good upgrade of our running game. Everyone that is talking down on Benson because he didnt obliverate some of the great teams in college, let me ask you a question... Did you even watch any of those games? If you did, then you would have noticed that there was ALWAYS at least 8 men in the box, and alot of times there was 9 because of Young's nonexistant passing ability... He is the power type of runner that would grind out lots and lots of carries a game. He doesnt have the home run ability that some of the other back have, but we dont really need that. All of you DD homers think about this. Benson starts the game and carries the ball 20-25 times a game and wears out the defense. After the defense is tired, DD comes in and gashes them for easy 5-8 yards a carry. Not only can Benson simply pound the ball up the gut, but he is actually pretty evasive. Also, with Benson drawing alot of attention from the defense it would help AJ get open. When the defense is least expecting it... Play action pass to AJ for 50 yards! :shocked

Vinny, Ive noticed that practially post the same views on just about everything... You know what they say, "Great minds think alike"! :jam:
