Just doing a quick scan in my head, I think he is...
That's a pretty valuable asset to have at such an important position...

Speaking of Warner, he has to be considered among the best backup QBs heading into this season. Todd Collins stepped in late last season and helped get Washington into the playoffs. He should get some consideration. But yes, Sage should be mentioned with these guys as the top backup QBs in the league. So, barring some out-of-nowhere Kurt Warner/Tom Brady occurrence again...
If not THE best, then certainly one of the best for "our Offense".
On pure, God given talent alone, Lienhart is the best back-up in the NFL.
Leinart was named the starter by Ken Whisenhunt last week. But, he's on a short leash. Is Leinhart still the backup there or is it Warner?

As far as performance, Vince Young is a top 5 back-up quality.

No Brady Quinn fans here ?
Ok... are we asking who has the best qualities you would want for a back up or who IS the best back up. Im asking because last I heard young was the titans starter.
The NY Giants signed a pretty decent backup in the offseason. If Eli goes down, the Giants are in pretty good hands, since they are covered by pretty white gloves !!

Worked like a charm for the Panthers last year, didn't it?

Actually, let's think about it this way: what semi-proven QBs (i.e. besides guys like JaMarcus Russell and Brady Quinn) would you trade Sage for heads-up?
Going division by division (Numbering as I go, these are not rankings):
AFC EAST:
1. Brady
AFC SOUTH:
2. Peyton
3. Schaub--some here will disagree, but he's proven it to Kubiak
4. Garrard--only one good season, but it was very, very good
5. Young--giving a generous benefit of the doubt
6. Kerry Collins--he looked good torching us earlier in the year
AFC CENTRAL:
7. Carson Palmer
8. Roethlisberger
9. Derek Anderson--see Garrard and then some
10. Charlie Batch--he's proven more than Sage has, but it is close
AFC WEST:
11. Philip Rivers--though he has benefitted greatly from a close-to-peerless supporting cast
12. Cutler--and this is really, really, really close
NFC East:
13. Romo
14. Eli
15. McNabb, but that's really looking shaky now.
(I just can't say Todd Collins)
NFC Central:
16. Kitna
NFC South:
17. Brees
18. Delhomme
19. Jeff Garcia
NFC West:
20. Kurt Warner
21. Leinart--though calling him even semi-proven is a stretch
21. Hasselbeck
22. Bulger
That's it. Certainly there are some young guys who will be bursting onto this list in the next few seasons. But as of today, these are the only guys that I would consider upgrades (and, in some cases, only marginally so) over our current backup.
If not THE best, then certainly one of the best for "our Offense".
He's a gun-slinger like Favre was, but w/o the same level of arm-strength and accuracy.
I am using my voodoo magic to stop this becoming a start Sage thread!!
Start Sage now!![]()
Should have started the second half last week.
Hmmm my voodoo isn't working, time for an animal sacrifice to pump up the juice.....

I'm hoping he kicks some arse this week, wherever that may be (Ike take a hike!!!)
the instant Leach missed his assingment & Woodley went untouched & impaled Schaub into the Riverfront tundra Sage should have started warming up. We know Schaub is tough & didn't want to come out he's a warrior & we respect that about him but he needed to take the rest of the 1st half off & screw his collective bearing back on his shoulders, that was a standing 8 count if I ever saw one. Yet Kubes in all his wisdom left him in for more punishment & mishap, thereby costing the team any chance to make a game of it.
Sage knows how to run the offense, he is also confident & competitive. He throws on the run exceptionally well & challenges coverage downfield putting pressure on the defense. In a game like the one in Pittsburgh where protection is breaking down you need a mobile QB that can make an aggressive defense pay with some big plays out of the pocket. still would have been next to impossible win but at least a better assesment of Schaubs condition made to start, or not, the 2nd half & keeping the Texans a little closer![]()
I agree but I can see where perhaps Schaub and Kubiak made a good decision. Maybe not the right one, but a good one. Schaub hasn't proven to this team that he can withstand a full season, there were questions of his toughness all offseason and preseason. Taking him out would've put a little bit of doubt in the rest of the team on Schaub, either for the rest of the season or second half. I know if he came out, I would've been more scared in the second half if he came back in even if I thought he was hurt or not. I would've thought to myself this guy is only going to get hurt worse. Him staying in puts the weight on me to try and make sure he doesn't get touched anymore and to make the catches necessary.
