Improving Our WR Room

As everyone knows, our WR room needs help, and I’d love to build through the draft. Problem is that this WR class isn’t great and doesn’t have a lot of size, but it does have some good options.

Here are several prospects that I wouldn’t mind drafting on each day of the draft.

Day 1:

Jaxon Smith-Njigba WR- OSU

- Slot receiver with potential to play outside. Due to injury this year, JSN was limited, so we don’t have any data on whether or not he can play outside.

- great hands and body control

- excellent route runner

JSN is the only receiver I’d take in the 1st round. If I wanted another target for our QB I’d go TE in round 1.

I know some people might balk at me not having Quentin Johnson listed, but he’s not for me. Too many body catches. I just think there should be more with him.

Day 2:

Jordan Addison WR- USC

5’11 173 lbs

- sneaky releases

- excellent route running

- proven production

There’s a chance he slips to round 2 because of his size/speed. I look at his production and would be willing to take a chance in round 2.

Josh Downs WR- North Carolina

5’9 171 lbs

- great hands and route running

- small slot receiver

- comp Tyler Lockett comparison

Cedric Tillman WR- Tennessee

6’3 213 lbs

- outside receiver with good body control

- great size

Tyler Scott WR- Cincinnati

5’10 177 lbs

- great speed and explosiveness

- consistent separation

- makes good ball adjustments

AT Perry WR- Wake Forest

6’3.5 198 lbs

- great size, red zone threat

- outside receiver with good body control

Day 3:

Xavier Hutchinson

6’2 203 lbs

- excellent size = contested catches

- excellent production

Jayden Reed WR- MSU

5’11 187 lbs

- scheme versatile

- YAC ability

- excellent Senior Bowl

Michael Wilson WR- Stanford

6’2 213 lbs

- excellent Senior Bowl

- quick releases

- ball skills

The only concern I have is the production due to injury history, but I’d be willing to take a flier on him.

Charlie Jones WR- Purdue

5’11 175 lbs

- strong hands

- excellent route runner

- value as KR

Puka Nucua WR- BYU

6’2 201 lbs

- toughness

- good athleticism

Andrei Iosivas WR- Princeton

6’3 205 lbs

- elite athleticism

- ball skills

Quinton Johnson at 12 or with a trade down and you're last Losivas are the only two that I would be interested in.

JSN hamstring concerns me. I think we have a thread on wide receivers elsewhere if you wanna look.

I might’ve missed it somewhere. I’ll look again.

Funny how another Tennessee guy gets no coverage. WR, Jalin Hyatt has all the tools to be pretty special in the NFL. Even with his size....he's an active and willing blocker downfield. At 6-0 and 176 pounds, he's plenty fast to put DC's and DB's on notice. Thing is, he looks like he could carry another 14 pounds which would make him a more than capable WR1 or WR2 in Slowick's WCO.

Here it goes again....yes, I would offer Nico Collins to the Jets for WR- Denzel Mims, straight up. The teams would be swapping a couple of receivers who just didn't live up to expectations. Mims is a 6-3 / 4.3-40 guy who should utilized as a WR1. Collins is a 6-4 / 4.45-40 guy who's a big possession receiver target at WR2. Texans need a WR1 speed threat if for nothing else....to keep defenses honest and helping to open the running lanes. Collins would probably become a Rodgers favorite b/c of his size and potential ability to work open over the middle or down the sideline. Maybe both guys could reach their potential in new systems.

If the Texans were to field a trio of Mims and Hyatt on the outside and Metchie in the slot.....pretty good chance defenses aren't stacking the boxes anymore. This certainly improves the opportunities for Pierce and Singletary to exploit defenses.

As for the Texans need of possession receivers, I believe Schultz and Quitoriano could handle that roll with little issue...especially if the new and improved speed at WR plays a roll in keeping defenses spread out.

My problem with Hyatt would be his play strength and lack of experience versus press coverage. If you watch Tennessee highlights of Hyatt, he lines up behind another receiver and barely has to fight off press coverage. I think he’ll have problems adjusting in the NFL.

If we wanted to add speed we could get Scott in the 3rd/4th range. He was the fastest at the Combine.

The problem scouts have with Hyatt is he is a one trick pony. He is fast. Quite a few believe he wasn't the best on his team. Tillman was better.

This WCO needs a big body WR running outside and can block. That's Quentin Johnston. I'd like to trade down for him.

Not enamored with Njigba because we already have a slot guy in Metchie. If he doesn't work we'll get one next year, but no reason to spend a #12 on a specialty role that we may already have covered.

Oops, thought it was mid 1960s and you were talking about one trick pony Robert bullet Bob Hayes...

Sorry, continue please..

What do you think about Rashee Rice? Many know his name but not size, stats or watched him play. I'm interested in your take.

Problem I'm having with these observations....the thought that players in the Tennessee offense couldn't possibly put their assets to use in another offense. They were recruited by Tennessee and coached up to run their designed offense. My bet....put Hooker and Hyatt with Alabama or Ohio State and their numbers probably increase by 15-20%. Both of these guys should have nice NFL careers....depending on their landing spots.

Yes, if player has skill sets, our new and improved coaching should turn them into quality NFL players.

Just researched him. He has talent, good hands, and runs a good route. The way he high points the ball is impressive. The big knock on him was inconsistency, which can be coached out.

If we're going value pick I'd rather get Michael Wilson. He's 6'2", 213, gets fast separation, great ball skills, and is STRONG. He put up 23 reps on bench. Will be an excellent run blocker.

Thanks for that. I see on his profile he has some sort of health issue? Haven't been able to pinpoint it. I see the Patriots hosted him for one of their visits too.

Wilson had two consecutive Jones fractures, an injury CnD has posted about many times. Wilson refractured his metatarsal two days after returning from the first fracture, which indicates it had not fully healed. The issue may be less concerning if he has sufficient time to heal.
