If in same draft: Carr or Vick?..... V. Young stats.

Well, I must admit that right now I am TORN!!! I am glad that I am not the owner or GM of the Houston Texans, because I don't know how I could make a decision (either way, you are going to make a lot of people happy and a lot of people mad -- so you just have to make your choice and live with it!).

I must admit that I am a proponent of drafting Reggie Bush, however part of me thinks that if Vincent Young chose to enter the draft I would be tempted to draft him. It would be a difficult choice, but after the game last night I think I would probably lean towards Vincent Young (the hometown factor also plays a part in my bias).

So here is my initial question: If they were in the same draft, would you have taken Carr or Vick? I have heard MANY people over the past few years say that if Michael Vick would have stayed in college for one more year, then the TEXANS would/should have drafted Michael Vick. Now, given this hypothetical, look at the stats of Michael Vick's last season in college (2000) versus Vincent Young's stats at the end of this season (2006-6):

Michael Vick – 2000 stats --- Vincent Young - 2005 stats
Ht - 6’1’’ Wt – 215 lbs --- Ht - 6'5'' Wt - 233 lbs
Attempts 161 --- Attempts 325
Completions 87 --- Completions 212
Percentage 54% --- Percentage 65%
Passing Yards 1234 --- Passing Yards 3036
Touchdowns 8 --- Touchdowns 26

I got these statistics from the official NCAA website (you can look up statistics in the Archive).

You have to admit, that if Young decides to enter the NFL Draft, it is going to make things VERY INTERESTING!!!
 
I think we are a winner wither way....say we do draft VY what can we get for D. Carr? Maybe a first rounder this year?
 
If I had to choose between Vick and Carr...hmm

I would still choose Carr. Vick may not have been sacked as much as Carr has because he can run, but Vick can't throw the ball. Vick has also been injured more than Carr has.
 
I think Young is a better prospect than Vick, and that's saying alot because I thought Vick was an outstanding prospect, and still think he does more to effect winning than just about any QB not named Manning or Brady.
 
I heard some speculation on ESPN today (or at least the ESPN analyst's opinion of what the Texans 'might' do)...

Basically here is the scenario that they came up with:

1) The Texans draft Vincent Young with caviat that he is going to be the back-up for one year in order to "learn the ropes."

2) Since the Texans are likely going to hire an 'offensive minded' head coach, expect Carr to put up some great numbers next year. After putting up fanastic numbers/statistics (the ESPN analyst has no doubt that Carr is capable of this, and neither do I), you increase Carr's trade value significantly.

3) Then, you trade Carr to another team for key draft picks (or other players that you may want/need), and the hometown guy Vince Young becomes the starting quarterback.

This is a very interesting 'plan.' Please don't misinterpret me... I like Carr. I still think he has the potential and the tools to be a great quarterback. Once he gets a coach that knows how to use him, he is going to be fantastic. Like I said earlier, this whole Vince Young thing creates a dilemma for me, because if he decides to enter the draft, it will be hard not to pick him. If he decides to play another year of college, then the problem is solved because the Texans will pick Reggie Bush (which will still be a GREAT pick), but I'm getting the feeling that Vincent Young is going to declare for the NFL Draft...
 
BRT - possible... similar situation that was had with Moon / McNair with the Oilers. Was it one or two years that he was on the sidelines watching the speed of NFL and learning?
 
I take Carr. Vick is a highlight film, but like most running QBs and eventually VY you have to deal with lower body and back injuries. It is the nature of the NFL beast. Carr other than wins which are the most important thing put up better stats than Vick this year. Which tells me this if Carr can play as well as he does in the system we have then he can play a hell of alot better in a system that maximizes his stengths. See I am not waiting on Carr's potential he showed that to me in year 2. Now I am going on development into the QB he is to become. Next year is the defining year of what he will be.
 
Young's stats are extremely impressive. I'd have a tough time choosing between him or Bush if we were faced with that scenario. Dude can run like a madman, but seems to have the arm to develop into a solid NFL QB. That is a lethal combination beyond what even Vick offers.

Steve Young was a mobile quarterback, not a running quarterback. I'm talking about the Michael Vicks and Kordell Stewart types of quarterbacks.

IMO, the problem with the plan is: 1. Carr might not put up big number despite a new offensive coach. Not everybody instantly clicks with a new system. That and we are still not a team with significant depth and experience at this point.2. If things are going unwell for Carr, it could get really ugly with the fan base--one problem with drafting hometown favorites is that people really want to see them play. The guy on the bench is always the most popular guy in town. See Bucky from back in the day.; 3. Lameduck Carr would be a sad thing to have around. The Brees-Rivers thing has been awkward but is helped some because LT is such a hoss.

You are wrong. Steve Young was every bit a running Quarterback as the guys you mention. It took years for him to become the eventual pocket passer he was. He was a great runner at every level he played.

If we can expect David Carr to put up great numbers with a new system why are we going to get rid of him? You are basically saying that we already have a great quarterback who isn't being coached properly, but we should get rid of him for a rookie who will cost twice as much and still is very raw. Most rational people agree that it will take 2 to 3 years minimum for Vince Young to develop into a pro quarterback. If we have a good quarterback now, why set the franchise back at least 2 to 3 years to get a local guy?

How many years did Steve Young sit behind Joe Montana? The extended period that he did sit was crucial to his development because he was able to make the transition from scrambler to pocket passer without struggling in actual games and lowering his confidence.

The transition is a very hard one and not many can do it. I'm afraid that the fans here will not be willing to wait (even if he is a local guy).
