If Adrian's Gone, here's my spin............

If A.P. is gone, I think trading down to spot 17 with the Jaguars is a possible good idea. If this were to happen and we gave them our 4th Rd pick, I believe we could acquire their 2rd pick. First three selections:

1. #17 (S) Reggie Nelson - I believe he could fall that far
2. #40 (CB) Aaron Ross - I think he has lots of talent and should be there.
2. #49 (Qb) Troy Smith or (RB) Michael Bush Either of the two will be fine, but I don't believe either will be available when our turn comes around in the third. That would make a big impact on both sides of the ball with our first three picks.

If someone believes there will be better talent at the #40 spot, let me know.

go with chris houston over ross. we can go with a qb next draft, who will be much better than smith. go with more defense with the second 2nd rounder or some OLine help.

1-Reggie Nelson FS
2-Chris Houston/Tony Ugoh CB/OT
2-Tony Ugoh/Chris Houston OT/CB
3-Kareem Brown DT
4-Traded
5-Gary Russell/Brandon Jackson/Alonzo Coleman RB

We address our 3 weakest spots defensively and take an OT prospect and get a good RB prospect. I'd rather trade a 5th and a future pick to take either Russell or Jackson in the 4th.

I don't like Aaron Ross much, he'd be a much better fit in a tampa cover 2 system. I would much rather go with Chris Houston there assuming he falls that far, but I have a sneaky suspiscion he's going to end up flying up draft boards after the Combine like Johnathan Joseph did last year. I don't know that Reggie Nelson falls to #17, I think between the Falcons at 11 and the 49ers at 13 that both Nelson and Landry could end up being taken, and I'm not a huge fan of Nelson's anyways. If Peterson is gone, I personally would stay at #8 and take Jamaal Anderson if he's there, otherwise I'd maybe look to trade back a bit but trading back that far might very well cost us a very good player as I don't think this draft is especially stocked with great players at the top of the draft. I also don't like taking Troy Smith and highly doubt the Texans do that, and I'm not sure why the Jaguars would be trading up to #8. Michael Bush in the 2nd round would be a pretty decent pick if we can't get Peterson in the 1st. If Peterson and Jamaal Anderson are gone I'd probably look at taking Leon Hall at #8 and then Brandon Meriweather at #39, that could do wonders for our defense, if we do get Peterson or Anderson in the 1st then look at Houston or Meriweather in the 2nd.

Not sold on Nelson either. But i wasn't aware that Brandon Jackson was available. If it's the Brandon Jackson from Nebraska i am sold. The guy really turned his game up towards the end of the year and if he's there at the 5th that is a steal IMO.

Ditto to what Mork said except that if Peterson and Anderson are gone I would be happy with Adams.

If Peterson is gone I think we will take Lynch. There isn't much of a drop off from Peterson to Lynch. Some scouts believe that Lynch could be better than Peterson.

Here is my spin reposted from another thread.

I have to disagree that FO will be making picks based on sexiness. I hope they select the player who they feel can contribute and have the most impact with the team.

For instance in analyzing AP contribution to the team, the Texans rushed an average of 26.9 times a game for a total of 431 rushes for an average of 3.9 ypc and 1687 yds last year.

With the addition of a healthy AP playing 16 full games a yr and putting the ball in AP's hands 20 times a game, 320 times a year and using the productivity of the last years Oline play, projecting an aggressive 4.2 ypc for AP is 84 yds per game/1344 yds per yr.

Based on last years numbers, the other backs would get 7 rushing attemps per game or 111 yds a yr at 3.9 ypc is 28 yds per game/433 yds per year. AP's 1344 total yds and the other backs 433 yds comes to 1777 yds per yr.

AP would have given you 5 or 6 yds more per game or 90 additional yds for the year.

Now if you going to say the Oline will be better, which I hope it is, it will also be better for the other backs. If you going to say AP will get better ypc than 4.2, keep in mind that Larry Johnson, Steven Jackson, Deuce McCallister and Tatum Bell all avg 4.4 yds per carry. If you to project 4.8 ypc for AP, thats 1536 yds per year or additional 282 yds to last years total or 17-18 ypg.

I don't know if I call that sexy and can understand why Kubiak shys away from RBs in the 1st RD. Now if the FO finds a premier pass rushing DE who combined with Mario will limit opposing QB 3 seconds or less to pass, the DE would be a better contribution and impact for the team

I agree, lynch could be just as good as peterson, and i would not have a problem taking lynch at 8 if peterson is gone.

Thats a good assesment (even though i misspelled it), but you cant look at a running back's productivity strictly from a yardage standpoint. Having a workhorse running back gives our offense an identity which right now is sorley lacking. At the moment our offense is AJ, then, uh...Ron Dayne? It also establishes a rather fearsome collection of skill players with AJ, Moulds, OD and then Peterson to build around, with or without Carr. Another factor that was not repressented was AP's big play potential, something that no back on our team and no player other then AJ really posses to strech the D. While I realize relying on a running back to break off 60 yard TD's is not realistic (it was my main argument against Reggie last year), we at least need the threat of the occasional big play to keep defenses honest and to take all that pressure off our offense, which currently is saddled with the task of playing nearly perfect football for 10 play drives because we cannot move the ball vertically and need most everything to go right in order to march the ball downfield.

On both sides of the ball, the run is a weak point for the Texans. It is also going to be important next year, based on how the teams performed in 2006. So if Adrianne Peterson is gone, I think the Texans look to Alan Branch first or Gaines Adams second. If they aren't there, the Texans look to Marshawn Lynch. No way all these guys will be gone.

From the sounds of it Chris Houston will be graded out a couple (CB) spots higher than Ross. Unfortunately, it does not appear that he will be available at spot #40, that is why I chose Aaron Ross. It doesn't matter to me as long as they get a quality defensive player @40. Preferably a CB,DB. Additionally, if we trade down to the hypethetical #17 spot we can get an additional pick in the second round which can bring more value than Adams, Branch etc in my opinion. The additional second round pick should be able to provide an additional upgrade to one of our many weekspots. The thought of Smith/Bush was just a need pick that have potential and should be there. An additional solid starter should have more value than the 8th pick in my opinion.

If lance Z's insider stuff is on from his blog...Chris Houston will not make the forty. I called McNeil and Brown RT's only. I'm not making the same mistake this year. Wipe Russell from your memory banks. He's not going to be drafted. Further, with his effort this week, they give him a whistle and they call that there thingy...coach. Russell will not be drafted.
