I think we should go offense with our 1st pick.

Working?
Here me out before you criticize the decision.

First of all, I think with a little secondary help (FS + CB2) our defense will be much, much improved. In fact, with the same guys we had all year (and even less because of injuries), we changed from an embarassing last in the NFL into a team with a real shot. With guys being injured left and right along the Dl, we still managed to really come together as a defense and are on the up and up. As a result, i can see why everyone wanst to finish the defensive puzzle and add those 2 or 3 key pieces to finish the job. We would have a dominating defense.

But would it really matter? While our defense improved as the year went on, our passing game fell further and further into oblivion.
Problem #1 - Injuries to key members of our offensive line
Problem #2 - Horrible QB play
Problem #3 - Lack of playmakers?
We've remedied problem #2. I think problem #1 will take care of itiself with offseason health and conditioning. But what about problem #3? Sure we added Ahman Green, but we also lost our only real WR#2.

I think AJ, Schaub, the entire OL, and Green would all benefit incredibly from having a real, viable, sure thing prospect WR lining up on the opposite side of AJ.

Brown is not our long term answer at FS and Faggins is no long term answer at CB, but our defense was improving despite them. Our passing game will look better with Schaub, but without someone on the other side, we will see the same triple coverages that AJ started getting at the end of the year even more often.

If we trade down from 10 to the middle or end of round 1 and pick up an extra 2nd or 3rd, we can pick someone like Meacham or Jarrett or Bowe or Rice with our 1st pick and go secondary with the rest of our day 1 picks.

I'm sure you feel that it's the best thing. But can you see it from my point of veiw...basically, unless you're overvaluating the o-line tallent to effectivly cover this season, you're doing the exact same things as you did in 2002, 2003 and 2004... Taking a skill guy when both lines are still shall we say a work in progress ? I can see getting the pick of the litter at CB. I can see the DT argument. But WR2, unless you're projecting that A.J. is going down this year isn't on my high prority list. Might be on Kubiack's. He may beleive that the WR2 is what can make his play action passing attack go. Maybe by getting someone to strech the feild ....that will open things up. But the gamble on that one is once again, can this group of guys hold their blocks for 3.5 seconds ? That's the bottom line on the WR2 pick. If you say yes...make the pick. Because as we saw last year....there has to be at least the threat of completing the long one to make the thing go. We don't even have a threat at this point. And if you ain't got those 3.5 seconds with this group....everyone else in the NFL is going to know too. Pitts and xt say we do...we'll see.

I go back and forth on who I want us to draft and whether that be offense or defense. I think there are some very good arguements for us to draft Levi Brown, Marshawn Lynch, or a WR.

Preferably for me if we draft a WR, I would like to trade down like you mentioned. I do think it's important to get a pick back this year/next year/or both. There's no doubt that it would help schaub and AJ out to have another threat. and our offense really wouldn't be that far from complete if you think about it! that sounds weird.

I'm okay with whatever route smith decides to go in. I don't know much about David Anderson or Kevin Walter? or if kubiak thinks they could be fine for now. I do see our Defense in need of another stud DE, DT, CB, or FS in the 1st round this year. and throughout the draft.

There is no doubt that a 1st round WR we would pick would be better than a 3rd round wr. Same goes for FS or CB....the guys we'd take in the 1st would definitly be better than 3rd rd guys...that's all a given but how much of a dropoff do you think there is for each position? I honestly don't really know. I would think that a 3rd cb like say Fred Bennett may have a harder time starting this year or right away than a 3rd rd receiver like aundre allison or somebody (but of course i really don't know that and really havn't seen these guys play).

I think it'd be a good idea to get some picks back and going the offensive route could be real tempting seeing how close we actually are to 'finishing' the offense and to really give Schaub the most to help him out.

i agree with some of what you said but you can't always make the argument that someone drafted in the 1st round will surley be better than someone in the 3rd. Colston was drafted in the 7th i think and was way better than santonio holmes, drafted in the 1st. Tom brady (taken in 6th round) is way better than any qb taken in the 2000 draft.

oh theres no doubt about that. but for the most part there is a reason why those are drafted in the 1st are and 3rd are. sometimes its warranted, sometimes not. but all in all, would you rather have Reggie Nelson or Michael Johnson, Chris Houston or Fred Bennett, Patrick Willis or Tony Taylor, Robert Meachem or Steve smith, marshawn lynch or darius walker....and the list goes on.

answer those truthfully and you'll get my point. no disrespect towards tom brady, marques colston at all. lol

Some things need to be taken into account when determining if we go offense:

Is Charles Spencer going to fully recover?

Is Levi Brown a better option regardless, and worth the #10 pick?

If Spencer/Salaam can get it done, the only offensive player I would be willing to take is a WR...and wihout a trade down, that seems a little high for Meachem. Maybe the guy is a player though...just seems like he was a relatively unspecial player until the combine. While the first round seems to be deeper in defenders, I still think thats where the value is around our pick. I think we can find a WR in the 3rd.

Good post. I appreciate your reasoning, but I disagree with your conclusion for two major reasons:

(1) IMO, I think the defensive backfield and OL are still our biggest areas of need and should be addressed before we select WR2. I think shoring up one of these positions on the first day of the draft does more to improve our team than a WR accross from Andre.

(2) We have a better chance of finding a WR to step in and fill this void in one of the later rounds of the draft. Even if we don't, I think that we have players on the roster who may be able to step into this role, or at least be serviceable for one season. In general, I think good OL and DBs are harder to find later in the draft. We have brought in Black in the offseason and Spencer may be able to play, but I am not sure that we want to take that risk again this season. I don't think we have anyone available on the roster that can improve what we have at DB.

Well, all along I've been hoping the Texans drafted Okoye at #8 and then get Kalil, Staley, or Ugoh at #39, but I guess we can throw that out the window now. I've been trying to think about which way to go, like everyone else, since the Schaub trade, and I'm leaning more to the idea of trading down (if we can find another partner) to get another pick. The problem is how far down do we go and who will be left to pick that we need/want?

I tend to agree with Pete that we still need to fix what has been broken for the last 5 yrs and not rely on Spencer's health or no one else getting hurt on the OL this year. I wouldn't mind if they traded down into the twenties and picked up Staley or Kalil and then got a 2nd rounder also, but I think Kubes and Smith have something else in mind.

A couple of things that Kubes/Smith have said this year could play into where they plan to draft OL. First they said they are going to fix the OL and they aren't going to count on players coming back from injuries. This shows they will draft OL in this draft. Secondly, Kubes said he believes this is a deep draft for OT, which seems to be opposite what most everyone else is saying. This tells me he probably will not use a 1st round pick and maybe even a 1st day pick on OT. I think at the Combine they interviewed Ryan Harris who is projected to go in the 4th or 5th round.

Anyway, I guess my thinking is they will try to trade down and pick a DB like Nelson or Houston, and then start looking at WR in the next round. They probably won't take an OL until the 3rd or maybe later rounds. It's not what I would do, but can live with it. JMHO!

The Draft is deep for OT, though maybe a little lacking in quality/premium
players after Thomas. Therefor, I dunno but for all we know Kubiak and his
people may rank somebody like Ryan Harris right there with Levi Brown. After
all, these other ZB teams like Denver & Atlanta can routinely get some good OT talent on the second day.
But you're scenario of the Texans trading back for another pick and going DB, WR, OT within the first 3 or 4 picks is a very possible, maybe even likely.
I definitely go along with just about everything you're saying here Insideop.
Good stuff !

Exactly--folks act like all guys ranked 2nd at their position are equal to the other guys ranked 2nd. Depending on the particular players each year, the 10th at position A might be better than the 2nd at position B--and in the same year, the 3rd at position B might be better than the 11th at position A.

That's why I think after the first round you go with the drafts strengths .

This year you could get a WR in the 2nd that some years would be 1st rd picks .

I think DBs are deep also .... so at # 10 I think you trade down and get more picks .

At the end of the 1st if you like Kalil or Staley fine . If not you can fill two needs pretty quick .
