How will you measure the rest of the season?

From a concrete viewpoint I will not waver on an 8-8 record as a fledgling organization needs to see marked improvement through all of the levers they have - draft, development, free agency acquisiton, etc. The season is not over so I will maintain this measurement of seeing one more win over last year's result.

From an abstract viewpoint I just want to see a better product on the field. I can take losses, but give me something that will keep me coming back (you know like a par on the 18th).

From a granular perspective we need to see some form of development from a player personnel/unit stand point. I will expect that the team exceeds last year's overall prodcution from the following statistics:

Offense:
total yardage
run yardage
less interceptions
less penalties
more receptions from players not named Johnson/Davis

Defense:
total points
total yardage
takeaways
sacks

Special Teams:
punt/kick return average improved

If I do not see 7 of these 10 measurements achieved year over year then Casserly, Capers, Fangio and Pendry need to go.

I want to see consistency on both sides of the ball. An offense that moves down the field, I don't care how but one that gets down and plays aggressive enough to keep the defense guessing a little more.

Defense, I want to see a lot more emotion. Whether they get a whole lot better or not is irrelevant right now, I want it to atleast LOOK like they give a damn. If we can get consistency on offense and controlled aggression on defense, with the rest of our schedule we might be able to make 8-8. It's a longshot though so as long as we don't hobble to a terrible record, 7-9 or so wouldn't kill me. I want to see progress throughout the rest of the season, beat the teams we "should" (based on the play last season, god knows we shouldn't beat anyone this season) and atleast be competitive with the top tier teams. Not this trash we've seen the past 2 weeks.

unless we win at least 1 more game than we did last year. the coaching staff needs to go. all of them. they don't seem to have that winning attitude we need. doesn't look like they will win 8. prove me wrong Texans.

Offense:
total yardage

As long as the yardage results in points. I'd rather see 40 YD FG than turning it over 4th and short at the ten.

run yardage

Yes. Balanced with pass yardage.

less interceptions

Of course, but I'd like to see more shots downfield, which may result in more ints. Have you noticed the receivers slowing down to adjust to the long pass? Is it because Carr isn't used to throwing long? I'll consider it an improvement when they take more chances for big gains.

less penalties

Stupid penalties( DOG, FS). I don't think the Texans are too bad with penalties. I'd like to see the offense try the hard count and create some defensive offside penalties.

more receptions from players not named Johnson/Davis

Yes! Like I said above, take some chances! Throw it! Make them dive for it if you have to!

Defense:
total points

If we can keep the opponent's average below 20, I'll be happy.

total yardage

Bend but don't break? That just eats up the clock, tires our defense, and keeps their punter rested. But, it is nice to see the opponent get "only" a FG after an 80 YD drive.

takeaways

If get our ints up to last years level, great. It's our forced fumbles that need work.

sacks

This must improve.

I will measure it by the intangible stats nothing concrete but rather the abstract.

1. Pendry - New offensive Coordinator - Does the offense look less "vanilla"? That is the term i use for the formations and personnel we use on offense. Against Buffalo we pretty much stayed with a 2 wr 2 te set to tray and add blockers at the line with no success. We seemed to change it up a little bit more against the steelers as far as personel & formation, but by that time the steelers were playing hold onto the lead defense. I look for Pendry to keep the defenses guessing by changing up the personel on the field. On the line i look for him not to make any changes at this point in the year let these 5 play barring injury and let them get accustomed. I would like to see someone other than Bradford step into the #2 rec spot see what our other receivers can do. I look for Carr to be more disciplined and start goin thru his read progressions better and to just throw it away if no one is open instead of forcing the pass in.

2. Phillip Buchanon - New Cornerback - Ok kid time to be a man about things and play some football. First just because you are getting picked on and beaten, does not give you the right to give up on other plays as well. Against Buffalo you made some fantastic open field tackles, So I know you can do it. Against pittsbugh you had the chance to lay the wood on RB Willie Parker but you seemed to just let him score. Also you are giving the speed receivers too much space. Get in there and chuck the receiver, disrupt the timing get physical... I would much rather you give up those yards being a thug and contesting the pass, rather than being posterized by the teams deep threat or go to rec. Maybe a week of not starting will send a message.

3. Vic Fangio - Defensive Coordinator - Pretty Simple here, Change up the blitz packages, start bringing people from all over the field possibly add some stunts and delay blitzes to the package. Not just alternate between babin and peek for most of the game. Something has to be done to create penetration. I think the defense overall is good but because the offense has basically handed the ball right back to the opposing teams, the defense seems to have lost confidence and that may be what we are seeing.

Record Wise I am not really basing much on that as much as I am basing it on the performance on the field. I mean if the final 14 games, we fight all theway to the fourth quarter and lose it on a fluke play or miraculaous score. I would be happy as long as we put ourselves in position to win every game. But to play like we just put this 53 man roster together 3 hours before the game the last 2 weeks is embarrassing.

I will measure it by accountability by the coaches and players. I want to see the coaches put the best performing players on the field regardless of salary, years in the league, and all this "I love the way Pendy yells at us" rear-end kissing.

I have said this in previous posts.

It's one thing to lose but to be blown out and totally embarrased is another.
If you are competetive enough to be in close games, you can pull out an unexpected win now and then to help your standings.

You have no chance to win with a score of 28-0 etc. at the half.

I know the Steelers are for real, and thought that Buffalo was, but they(Buffs) are getting their butt kicked!

Good post and on target IMO.

I have become maybe the most loathed of all football fans. I've turned on my team and am now hoping that they do not improve on last years record. I want a coaching change and am willing to accept a 3 or 4 win season if that's what it takes to get it. I don't think watching the Texans stumble through another season of "Dom-ball" but managing to "hang close" and pull out 7-8+ wins "late in the game" is a good thing even if numerically it's an improvement in the win column.

It makes me sad but at the same time on some level I'm looking forward to seeing the Bengals kick the Texans from one end of the litter box to the other.

I remember saying the exact same thing about the Bengals four years ago. except the litter box part.

I hate to say it Herv but I have become the same type of fan.

I think alot of us have become that kind of fan... I hope we go 4-12 not just for a new coaching staff, but also for the #1 pick overall.
