How much can boosters pay/give college athletes?

In light of all the Rhett Bomar talk, i have a question for you higher knowledgable college fans:

How much can you pay/give a college athlete?

For example, if Brady Quinn mowed my lawn and I gave him a car for doing it, is that ok?

I was wondering how far you could take it. Anyone know?

They can't "give" them anything. They can pay them fair market value for services so the player needs to actually work and the pay has to be the same scale a non-player would be paid.
 
Well I went to LSU and seeing a player (to remain anonymous) driving a brand new Ford Excursion with TVs in the headrests... it was a little fishy. (he could have rich parents, but i doubt it, mainly because he was one of the most sought-after recruits in the country)
 
Loaning cars seems to be commonplace and IMO it folks tend to just look the other way. Maurice Clarett's trumped up insurance claim was for his loaner being broken into.
 
In terms of pure gifts, I believe they can't have a value greater than $25 from anybody. In other words, an athlete technically can't take the $50 or $100 an uncle or friend of the family might randomly give a college student for extra spending cash.
 
I go to U.L.M. (univ. of Louisiana in Monroe) and i had a friend who was a freshman middle linebacker last year (he was from houston and i diehard Texans,Astros, & Rockets fan and he would've went to UT but he lost his offer when he tore his ACL) anywayz he drove a brand new 4-door yota tundra and would tell people he could get them ANYTHING they wanted i thought it was kinda of weird.:spy:

Let's get real. You can answer your own question with that. Cutting the yard for a car! *lol* Personally, I think the NCAA is full of *******. Those guys should be paid. And before anyone says their education is free, save it.

Save it? Sorta like them saving 30+ grand a year on their education? A HUGE majority of these guys will NEVER set foot on a pro football field, however they will still start their new lives in the real world without a cent of school debt. I think that's a pretty damn nice trade off for not getting paid if you ask me.

I think it is a good trade off. I will graduate next August with my Master of Science in Accounting with over 30 Grand in Student Loans. I would have loved to have free education.
 
Technically they can offer nothing to the player. And the only way for the NCAA to have a clean slate of the cheating that is going on is to enforce the law.

I personally would have had many violations against me for doing the "right" stuff with our current players, such as driving them to the airport so they could go home for vacation or takinig a player out to lunch over Christmas break.

Same thing happened to me. Went to LSU and i saw a football player who was on the team at the time with a pretty nice escalade on 20 inch rims the whole shabang.

Hmm. if it is who i'm thinking about "highly recruited" then his parents aren't rich at all.:spy:

I agree they should be paid some kind of stipend. I don't see how a kid can have time to get an education, play football, and hold down a "real" job. The current system IMO penalizes athletes that want a meaningful degree.

I am curious though. Are you advocating a "no rules" colleges/boosters can pay what they want; a flat stipend; a university salary cap; or something else?
 
Oh everybody "knows". No one wants to make waves. Still trin' to figure out how Romance gathered up enough money to make his buy . Obvious the guy isn't an Einstien. Yet he came up with enough bread to buy five pounds ? Smells to me.
How much is five pounds of grass worth anyway in the open market ?

Fair enough--so they pay for college and their expenses and join extra-curricular activities for free.

Well and you've also got to realize how much "help" they get with their schoolwork. I have a friend who plays for LSU and he tells me about everything they get. They pretty much get the tests before they take them. What it actually is is a collection of questions that the teacher has been "known to ask in the past." aka the test.

If you're a starter on the football team, they won't let you fail a class. Simple as that. You think Oklahoma would let Adrian Peterson be suspended on grades? Or would Notre Dame let Brady Quinn fail a class? HELL NO
