How mobile is David Carr?

Kingzofthejungle

Practice Squad
Just curious how mobile David Carr is? Reason being the Lions D was very active this week in applying pressure with our Front 4, without the need to really blitz. Shawn Rogers is a beast and demanded double teams the whole game. We got 3 sacks, 2ints and forced 1 fumble on Rex Grossman. Rex also moved around very well, otherwise it would have been much more than it was. In fact Rex moved around very well. But he difinately had pressure on him. In addition the Chicago line was massive what is th Texans line like?

Thanks! Good Luck and no major injuries! Lord knows we don't need anymore!

On offense we run what basically amounts to what you saw Monday night in the Bronco game except younger and less proven. We roll Carr out like the Broncos roll out Plumber and we use zone blocking schemes as well. We have a poor man's version of that offense.....except with more fullback dive plays on long yardage situations. Carr throws better outside the pocket than he does in the pocket.

David Carr last year (note he was hurt for 5 games) had 151 yards rushing on 27 attempts. His longest one was 36 yards and an average of 12.6 yards per carry/per game. 2 rushing touchdowns.

Joey Harrington had 86 yards rushing last year in all 16 games and 30 attempts with an average of 5.4 yards/per game. His longest run was 26 yards and he had 0 touchdowns.

The leader was Daunte Culpepper with 73 atempts for 422 yards averaging 32.2 yards per carry/game and had 4 rushing touchdowns with a long of 42.

Hope that helps a little.

David Carr is pretty mobile, and he's athletically gifted. However, he's improved at feeling the rush since last year. Grossman is still essientially a rookie, and that might have contributed to some of the sacks in the game Sunday. I cannot say either way because I didn't get to watch the game. I agree with Vinny that Carr is a better passer out of the pocket than in the pocket. Our O-Line is pretty good, and the only real question marks are on the left side. LT Seth Wand is young and unproven, but he's shown well thus far. Pitts is very good on run blocking, and he was beaten a couple of times against Denver in pass blocking situations in the preseason. Weigert and Wade are very good on the right side, and McKinney is steady and reliable, but not a Pro Bowl type center. Bruener is an excellent blocker, and is better than advertised as a reciever. Billy Miller is a better reciever than blocker, and likely will be the 2nd TE come Sunday. How is the Lions O-Line? I know there was a lot of hype about Damien Woody, but I can't say I am aware of the rest of your OLine. Any insights about them would be much appreciated.

It doesn't matter. We're gonna beat the Lions next Sunday, because everyone knows they're the worst team in football. :neener:

Son. And I call you my Son becuase I am your Daddy! The Texans will fall hard, very hard on Sunday. You guys couldn't beat the worst team in Football, at home no less!

Ford Field is not kind to strangers and your pretty boy QB and suspect D will find out soon enough. I hope you guys are ready for next years draft, if not you should start planning for a top 5 pick. 0-2 is soon approaching for you.

Who's your back-up QB? Banks? Tell to get some reps this week he will be playing. Tell D.D. he might want to try some stick'em and tell your rookie DB and converted Safety they might want to actually stay within 20 yards of our WRs.

Tell your D-Line it is OK to rush the passer. It is legal now. You don't have to count to 10 Mississippi before they rush.

Oh yeah and tell your LBs that the TE is an legal receiver.

Lastly, Tell your offense Turnovers are a bad thing, a very bad thing!

If you can fix all that maybe you can beat the Charges next year!

Lions 28 Texans 14!

I like Carr and he may become a decent QB. I have said from day one that he is not a franchise QB. He will not be the same caliber as the John Elway's, Brett Favre's, Joe Montana's, Steve Young's etc.

He also needs to stop throwing the ball sidearm or three quarters or whatever you want to call it.

"Oh yeah and tell your LBs that the TE is an legal receiver".

LOL..that was a good one. I guess you don't know that Sad Diego has the best Tight End in the game ...at least last Sunday they did.

You might enjoy watching Andre Johnson play this weekend..he's a strong powerful receiver that you passed up... instead you took that brittle local boy who breaks his collar bone by breathing. eek:

Completely dissagree, Carr has all the tools to be a framchise QB, and he showed that Sunday completing 76% of his passes but everyone has there own opinion.

And king, that was funny especially the first line, but I wouldnt fet my hopes up on beating the Texans just because we lost to the Chargers. Our squad is better than yours and we will come 1-1 at the end of the game. Good game, but no way yall beat us. :boxing:

You have got to be kidding. You actuually believe that Carr has the tools as the top franchise QB's of the NFL. How long have you been around this game?

Come on look at the guy, good speed for a QB, great athleticism, he has a rocket for an arm, if you look at him in this weeks game, he had great vision throughout the game, hes tough, went his first season, got sacked 76 times and still came back for more.Like i said 76% completions thats one heck of a lot of completions. Hes maturing an checking down to his 2nd and 3rd options, IE Gaffney and Bradford each had a few good catches. Maybe we dont watch the same player and maybe its just something you dont like about him, I dont like Emmitt Smith and thinks he was overrated, even though he is one of the all-time greats.

I want to know what you think that he doest have what has he done to show you that he doesnt have leadership ability, a rocket arm, and humbleness. His vision is better but I cant judge him off one game, but he played well in preseason too. He is also maturing like I said good Qb Fanchise and pro bowl caliber.

1) TD to Inerception ratio is horrible.

2) Inability to throw down field

3) confusion when the blitz is obvious/ his fault or Palmer's?

4) He has not matured enough over the last three years. He will never be a superstar franchise QB. Sorry....That is just the way it is.

Boxscore you sound like some Lions Fans talking about Joey. QBs take a beating from the fans. We have fans wanting Carr. I guess it is the same all over the league. I think they both will be fine. Atleast neither are Ryan Leaf!

I am in NO way comparing Culpepper to Carr, but one thing I notice about Carr is he tippy toes when he is flushed out of the pocket like he is unasure on what to do. Watching Cullpepper against Dallas, was amazing. He was in total control. Whether he ran or scambled and threw, he was directing guys as he ran..

No, I am just stating fact. Be as wishful as you can be, but Carr will not be the franchise QB that most fans think he will be.

It would be great to hear what John Madding would have to say in a Monday night game. I am sure he would be more in agreement with me then the posters who have been against my opinion.

Brett Favre, Troy Aikman, Steve Young, and John Elway all had more INT's than TD's after two seasons. Some even had more INT's than TD's after their third year. You can criticize Carr for his stats, but just realize that the great QB's of the past had some pretty bad years early.

And how many of the above mentioned QB's had to start their first game on a team that was starting its first game? Carr's situtation is totally different than anybody else's so its impossible to say that he will or wont be that franchise QB by the stats he has until now.

I hope Carr does prove to be one of the great QB's in the game. I am a true Texan Fan. Have been a PSL owner from day one. So let's just hold the thoughts from the messages above until later in the season and most importantly a few years down the road.

One interesting little stat that came out on Marc VanDermeer's show today about the INT/TD ratios...If I understood him correctly, Joe Namath...yea that HOF/Franchise QB....had more career INTs than TD's.

DC is young...but like all young QB's shows promise and reason for concern in most every start. I think the talent is there, and I like his work ethic....but only time will tell....I like his chances but nothing is given in this league.

Sorry - save that title for the Chargers, (that's what all the media keeps saying and we want to promote everybody to keep thinking it). Of honorable mention are the Cardinals, 49ers and Giants....

Regardless - Detroit going to lose next week. It is an acknowledged fact that more games are "lost" than are "won" on any given Sunday - and this week its Detroit's turn to give one up.

Obviously only time will tell on DC but count me as a fan of him. I wasn't real excited about him when the Texans drafted him but after watching him over the years I see alot I like about him. Will he be a Montana, Elway, Favre? We could only be so lucky, my guess is an Aikman, Moon, Bradshaw type would be suficient though? Of course the greats are measured in SB victories save Marino and I can only hope we get to see 1 or two in the next 10 years.

I'm sure if Carr had his "druthers" he wouldn't have oppted to not have a NEW, green team to start with right out of the block with. Any young player in his right mind would have wanted to go to an established team. Carr wasn't given that advantage. What he's done in toughness, work ethics, leadership and dedication to this team and our fair city, more than qualifies him for service in my opinion. Some young QB's coming out of college can't hang in the NFL, we see it every years, even on an established, playoff or Superbowl teams. What Carr's overcome and continues to overcome should be admired and NOT critisized, as many fans often jump on the band wagon to do. I believe that had we not chosen him in the draft, we'd be still looking for our QB. Not too many players have the character or could have taken the beating or the lack of talent and survived to live another season, except him. I too believe that he has what it takes to become a Pro-Bowler and one of the greats in "due season". He's had a long hard road to tow, with still more challenges ahead of and yet he's still confident and still insists that the best is yet to come. He belives in our team and I for one give him credit for standing his ground and remaining centered on one thing...getting us to the playoffs. We live in a society of quick fixes and give me, give me now...somethings take time and anything worth having is worth waiting for. I for one will be patient and encourage other fans to do the same. We've only just begun to fight and when we do, the NFL won't know what to do with us. Oh ya, they'll probably jump on our bandwagon and say "I knew it all along", just like some of our fair-weatherd fans! :thumbdown

Who the heck is John Madding?

Tools? He's got them.

Rocket arm? Check.
Mobility? Check.
Smarts? Check.
Accuracy? Check.

You say he doesn't throw the ball downfield? Most of his TDs throughout his career have been on long throws. He can rocket the ball downfield with plenty of mustard. And ask the receivers about how hard he throws the ball. Go read some interviews. TD-to-INT ratio too high? I agree. And go ahead and check Elway's stats after three years in the league. Take a look at his ratio. He needs to stop throwing 3/4 or sidearm? Maybe, who knows? Brett Favre seems to have done OK with it so far (yeah, he threw a lot of INTs early in his career too, by the way). Carr's not accurate? Try 19-25 in Sunday's game. He threw one legit INT, the other was a batted ball that ended up in SDs hands. Stuff happens. One of his six incompletions was a TD pass that hit Baxter square in the hands.

I'm not making excuses for Carr, because in the end, results are all that matter. But if you want to say he doesn't have the tools, you're going to have to back it up better than that.

Heck,
I'd settle for just one game won on Carr's ability and- please no excuses
(know them by heart)- that's just my opinion...

I seem to remember Carr diving for a touchdown to win a game and another game he rushed for a touch down scored by reaching the ball across goal line before his body went out of bounds. Shh! Don't tell anyone. :thumbdown

I just love to read personal opinions about people that have absolutely nothing to do with the facts. "Carr will never make a great QB." Yet stats and simply watching the guy perform for two years with a makeshift offensive line are ignored. One of you said he has 3 years behind him, uh no. It is two years and one game. Does he make mistakes and blunders? Of course.

Most "experts" say this year should be a good year to evaluate Carr if the O line stays healthy, if the running back averages more than 3 yards/carry and if a tight end or running back catches an occasional ball for 4-5 yards. Only one game but I think Carr has looked good. Personally, I don't hold the batted pass that lead to an interception against Carr. We could argue all day he should have held it. Yeah, now we know it was hit. He admitted he forced the other interception. OK. Let's move on. A concern yes. A problem? Not yet.

0- 1 yes. But we have a thousand yard rusher with an exciting back up (at least when he is able to stay healthy). A wide receiver that almost hit 1,000.
Another wide reciever that averaged over 20 yds/catch and is known as a burner. Gafney looks good this year and Armstrong makes unbelievable catches and should see some time. OLine appears solid and maybe set for years. On left with Wand & Pitts (anyone remember Matthews & Munchak?)and right is even steadier. I am very satisfied we have right guys on offense. Now CRANK IT UP!! Hey Detroit! Here kitty, kitty. :soapbox:

Correct if I'm wrong but Carr has only played 2 complete years. He's 1 game into his third year, and has showed great maturation this season. Looked like a totally different guy in the preseason and had two bad breaks in weak one other than that solid game.

He also doesnt show confusion when blitz often anymore. Go back and watch the preseason games he picked up the blitz everytime and burned the defense and did it a couple of times last week.

He also throws a excellent deep ball, the only inability he has is Palmer's inability to let him throw it down field.

We are lucky to have Carr taking the snaps on our team, who in my opinion is one of the top 5 most athletic QBs in the league RIGHT NOW . I could think of at least 10 teams that would gladly trade places with us.

I've come to believe that the higher they (players) are the bigger & harder the ROCKS are! Sometimes even boulders. Not to worry though, even the President of these United States can't escape it or please everyone. Everybody has their own opinions as to what a QB should or should not do and NOBODY ever agrees! Leaders for millions of years have taken their fair share of criticism and Carr, I believe will survive his.

It's actually part of the enjoyment of the game for some people...imagine the unique ability to get involved in the game, without having to get his/her jersey dirty or leave the game without a concussion. Who wouldn't want that? I'm sure the REAL players would opt for it, because they are the ones who put their life and limb on the line anyway, to give the fans a few hours of enjoyment. So we'll let these fans have their fun, because that's what makes the game real to them and that's what keeps bringing them back. Yes, it's part of the enjoyment to "critique" defined: To examine or discuss. & also to "criticise" defined: To find fault with, or to point out faults & failures. I think there is a destinct difference. But that's just me and I choose to enjoy the whole experience and support the team as a whole and leave the real, hard work to those whom get paid for it. Just a thought! :soapbox:

I think QB's interceptions records are a waste of time. So many of them are the receiver's fault, tips, Hail Mary's etc.

I would think accuracy would be a much better judge of the worth of a QB.

Does he move the team? How do they do in the red zone? 3rd down conversions as a team? Those type of statistics to me are a better judge.

Carr is a bit reckless at times but that's not such a bad thing. I think he has the tools and is very good. If only he'd cut that hair! :hehe:

To answer the original question, Carr is mobile enough to take advantage of a team ingnoring him or move around in the pocket and/or bootlegs, et., but, at the same time should not beat a team with his legs.
