They beat some of the best teams in the NFL.

Mallett beat the Steelers.

Fitzpatrick beat the Patriots.

Keenum beat the Seahawks.

Sure, it was a total team win. Complimentary football, where the QB did his part.

A little off topic. I was watching the Cardinals dismantle the Packers (another one of those "perennial" contenders) & I got to wondering how different would that team be had OB went there (& subsequently how different our team would be had we got Arians). Would he have even gone out & got Palmer? If he had, would he ditch him once Hoyer became available? Would Fitzgerald still be on the team? Would anyone know who David Johnson is?

I admit I don't like Bill O'Brien. I know I said I'd give him his props if we won in Indy. That's that culture change we all hoped would take place (at least that's the way I'm taking it), & he's done a heck of a job winning 9 games with Arian Foster out for most of them.

Awe, well... I'm hoping for the best.

I firmly believe that David Johnson would be a star no matter who drafted him.

I still like OB. Wouldn't hesitate to swap him for Arians though.

.

I don't know that he'd ever see the field. OB is determined to make Blue & Polk work. Week 16.

We've brought Akeem Hunt in, Grimes looks more consistent than either, we used a draft pick on Kenny Hilliard.

As good as David Johnson is, I feel OB would use him as a change of pace guy, Special Teams specialist.

Soooo is it that we've been picking the wrong guys at QB or has O'Brien been mis-using them somehow?

Like he was used until Chris Johnson and Andre Ellington were both injured

Many of the draftniks on this MB wanted Smith to pick Johnson in the 2nd/3rd rd as a eventual Foster replacement. OB may have started Johnson out returning kicks and spelling Foster, but if you dont think he would give Johnson regular playing time after Foster got hurt, then you're letting your anti OB feelings show.

BTW, what is it that you dont like about OB? He's got this team on the cusp of the playoffs even after using 4 QB's and losing Foster. I'd say he's doing a heck of a job and McNair has finally found an above avg HC. Now if Smith was capable of finding OB players like Johnson in the 2nd/3rd rds Houston may finally have a team that could compete for a SB.

I think the problem is that he's trying to make Hoyer work. The "Hoyer" in his mind is not the guy we're seeing on field, but OB thinks he is.

It's a bit of a catch 22 as I'm saying this is one of the reasons I haven't fell in love with O'Brien. He's trying to fit square pegs in round holes. He wants Blue & Polk to succeed. I can't see any reason they are getting more playing time than Grimes & Hunt. Polk should be let go to open a roster spot. But he's number two on OB's depth chart.

David Johnson would have looked great. But OB would have gone on about not practicing like a pro, or having 2% too much body fat, or something to keep pushing Polk & Blue through that round hole.

Bernardrick McKinney
Xavier Sua-Filo
Brandon Brooks
Ben Jones
Keyshawn Martin
Jared Crick

I know... I know... you're talking about the 2013 draft. But who from that 2013 draft picked after Brennan Williams is still in the league? Starting?

There were 6 players taken after Williams.
3rdMontgomery (we all know his story)
4thWilliams(he reached an injury settlement with the skins)
6thQuesennberry(we know his story)
6thAlan Bonner(was in camp and on IR twice, not sure what happened to him)
6thChris Jones (patriots)
6thRyan Griffin(texans)

Granted you'd like to get more out of the 3rd and 4th but hitting on 50% (and potentially 75% depending on what Quees does) isn't bad.

My point is that no other GM did any better in that draft after the Williams pick. I think the only starter was drafted by the Ravens. But we plucked him off their practice squad... John Simon.

Yes, we should judge Rick Smith by his production in both the draft & free agency. But also vs his peers.

There haven't been many 3rd~4th round picks that have done anything in this league. Rick has been about as successful as any.

Not many, but several of Smith's players have left this team to contribute to other teams. Which should point to a problem on the coaching side of things.

It would be nice if those coaches were accountable to the GM. Then I'd have no problem laying more of our failures at Rick's feet. But the coach is only accountable to McNair.
