How important is NFL draft to you?

Most of you know I am a draft nut but what about you? I really look forward to it and re-arrange my schedule for three days. I have mock boards scattered all over my living room and mark off names as each team selects. I get very hopeful and often P.O. when our picks don't go way I want. I plan meals for each day to allow me to focus on screen. I have at least one sports radio station on and often two radios with different programs. I flip back and forth between ESPN & NFL. Cell phones are on vibrate and I usually disregard calls. Plus I have the TT MB up and running. I also do a lot of pacing.

I think this draft could be the most significant in recent history but am concerned that our #26 will not be a happy one for me.

Describe your "war room" or if you even watch.
 
I enjoy the ever-lovin' shyte out of the draft and everything that leads up to it.

My watch room is same as for games -- big screen & big laptop nearby. I DVR NFLN & ESPN and I always get pissed when the commentary skips over the Texans pick in depth analysis in favor of the "popular" teams. I'll be following Twitter this year, too -- see what value is added there.

I don't often get upset at picks -- although Cushing over Clay Matthews burned my butt.

I watch the draft but don't follow college sports too much so the later rounders are a usually a bit of a blur to me.
 
Well i took annual leave on saturday (rounds 2-3 here down under) so I'm all in.
Ill have a couple of friends over not to much because i don't want to get distracted.
Im currently finalising my final mock and draft board so ill have them next to me.
Ill have espn on my telly and NFL network on my comp.
So I'm pretty set.

I like the draft more than I do the regular season. Need I say more?
 
The first couple of days are fun for sure. The mid-late round picks are very important and can really make or break a draft but i don't usually know many of the players involved so i can't get excited about anything.
 
The draft is like Christmas in April, you get presents but you don't get to pick which ones. I watch in the bedroom so I won't be botherd so much and make mental notes as the draft goes on. I get mad when one of my favorite players that I know would be great as a Texan gets picked by someone else. I immediately start checking out a player when we pick someone I'm not familiar with. My wife hates draft time.

I love it! I flip channels between the espn and NFL coverage, and have the laptop running to keep track. I don't do my own mocks, but will have a couple printed out just to follow. After the first 4-5 rounds I start losing interest, and just check it periodically. One of my kids birthdays falls during draft time. I couldn't control the birth, but my wife knows not to plan the birthday party the weekend of the draft.

The draft is the singular most intriguing non-sporting event in the free world. It combines hundreds of College Football games on Saturdays, NFL on Sundays, Mondays, Thursdays etc..... then breaking down individual prospects trying to project future results. Then combining thousands of players, variables, into one neat package of best possibilities fitting into a Texan uniform that will inspire and engage our community :texan:
 
I soak it up. I will watch the entire thing. My personal life tries to get in the way but I wont let it.
 
I'm only interested in the guys that have the chance to come in and start so beyond the 1st 3 rounds, not very. And after those rounds, i just wait until the draft is over to see who else we got. To be honest after the 2nd round, i'm turning the channel and watching something else until the Texans' pick comes up again.

I don't have friends over as don't want the distraction. Like with the games a whole lot of non-football stuff going on. Last year a group of us were watching Texans and cooking out by lakeside pool. A female neighbor kept running her mouth about her Cowboys which was bad enough but almost everything she said was not correct or accurate. The drunker she got the worse she became. Her husband got drunk even quicker but at least he was silent except when he rolled out of the lawn chair and busted himself. 2 guys had to carry him home.

I've said exactly this for years. For as long as I can remember I have followed it. I'm typically pretty cheap ,but starting in February I make pilgramages to various book stores scooping up any draft publication I could find. Most years I could make it to about the 6th round before a player I wasnt familiar with got drafted.

I am that guy who got mad about 6th and 7th round picks when I felt there was better value on the board. And I am the guy who is so intent on finding out our pick that I can remember cussing ESPN every single year for their "The Texans pick is up, go to commecial" habbit.

There you go, I am wound up again! Doesn't take much. I probably will not sleep much beginning the night before round one. I pity the fool who knocks on my door!


Every year at this time I remember a prior draft and me saying who the hell is Demeco Ryans? chuckle. Not so fond memory is Texans not selecting CB Darrelle Revis. Took me a while to get over that, wait..still not over it.
 
My interest in the draft has gone way up since I joined this board. You guys are the main source of information for me since I don't watch college ball at all. I still do way more reading then posting though.
 
Been fascinated with the draft for a long time. Still miss the old set up but do enjoy talking up the first round all day Friday. Two greatest sports collide.

I have been following the draft since the days when you could only get the results on monday in the newspaper. I started having big parties on draft saturday when I was finally able to see it on ESPN. And then along comes Goodell. This guy is slowly ruining the game of football. Pretty soon the players will be wearing flags. When he moved the draft from saturday and sunday to thursday/friday/saturday he pi$$ed off a lot of fans. The draft was a much bigger event for fans than it is now. Now you can flip back and forth between the draft and your wife's favorite primetime show. Instead of an event that meant an all day party it is now a channel flipper for alot of fans that used to dedicate their entire saturday to it.

Of course I'm still a hardcore fan that watches all 3 days but the average fan got lost in the whole switch of days
 
So I just found out I have to fly to Washington Friday 27th & plane lands 5:30. Then I work Saturday. Hope to see most on TV. Hope hotel has ESPN at least.

I can't imagine the hotel not having cable/ESPN so you should be good Friday evening.

I love the draft, I get more gifts on draft day than Christmas and B-day combined.
 
The draft is important to me because it's something new that is happening during the offseason. Like others have said, I don't follow college football much, so who they pick is pretty much always a surprise to me. I enjoy my time on this board reading what others have to say about the draft picks as much as anything else. As always, I get more useful information from this board than I do anywhere else.

I'm probably going to miss most of Saturday's later round picks as I have to drive to Lufkin that day. But I'll read all about here. :)
 
Used to really love the old format of Sat/Sun. My sorry azz brother (the Bengals fan) would drive 3 hrs to show up. The living room would have Texan's, Cowboy, 49ers, Steelers fans and plenty of beer. We did this every year and it was great. Lots of good natured ribbing. Draft books and cheat sheets everywhere. A real event that we all would plan every year to attend.

Not so much fun now. We still talk durring picks but just not the same.

Sometimes I think people on this MB spend more time studying the draft than Rick does.

Remember Garys elective surgery during the combine? Follwed by a 5-11 season?
 
The draft was the highlight of the year when we were not winning. Now, coming off a playoff season, the draft is not as exciting as it once was. Also, with the Texans picking 26th it's even harder for me to get really excited about the draft. I'll follow it and watch it of course, but not with the fervor as some of you. The upcoming season is what's really exciting to me now that the Texans are going places!

Wow, not for me. Have to dig so much deeper into players game film and combine as there are so many more options. We are almost at the BPA each round than ever before. I do agree that actual season is 10 X better than draft because the season goes on so much longer.
 
I liked the draft better when it was all crammed into two days. The channel never left ESPN or NFLN and I was browsing football forums, discussing picks. I don't like the wait between rounds now, but the draft is still fun. Wish it was the first two rounds in day one though.
 
I preferred the 2-day draft, too. I watch pretty much every second of the draft.

Normally, I've got a bunch of spreadsheets with the players and my notes on them and where I think they should go and which ones might be a fit for us. I like to speculate on which positions/picks we're going to make. I like watching which players are falling to us that I think we could want.

I've had a really rough work schedule this year and I haven't done any research. I'll still follow the whole thing on the TV and on this board but I really don't know the players this year. So I'll just try to figure it out as I go along.

BTW, I prefer to be alone with just my TV and my computer during this process. I don't need any distractions.
 
Love it, but it's not that important. I'll watch it anyways, regardless, or at least keep up with our picks. And I liked it better when it was a two day draft and not three. But that doesn't stop me from watching.

Of course if you're into breaking down game film you'll enjoy the draft. :)
and you're right about there being a lot more options for the Texans to pick from, so that raises the level of speculation even more. Personally, I'm not into analyzing game film and I don't have the time I once used to so I'm not very familiar with a lot of these players. Don't get me wrong, the draft is still an exciting event but the season is better.

Hahaha if you only knew me, you would realize how untrue and funny that is. I have very little to no social life. For the past 2 years my entire focus has been on finishing my phd. I spend at least 6 days a week in lab and I keep this forum on just so that I can think about something else for a change instead of why all of my experiments are failing. Lol.
 
I'm just trying to maintain this trajectory I've been on for months now, hoping to not burn out just before the big show.
 
For me it was the 2006 NFL draft. I didn't really pay that much attention before then. While I looked into who the Texans took, I didn't really follow the draft all that much. After the Texans got to the mid point of the 2005 season, it was pretty obvious they were gonna get a really high pick. It became more fun to watch college football and see who could help the team than pay as much attention to the Texans. Watching the draft was an obvious extension. I loved it!

However, I also realized that the more i put into my draft prep, the more I would enjoy the actual draft. So, in 2007 I did my very first Texans mock on the about.com football message board. I began honing my skills and was pointed to this website by a friend of mine in 2010. The mocks here are markedly better than other ones I find becuase they are full of explanations. Rather than simply listing a player, most mocks here come with reasoning, analysis, and an explanation. Coming here and reading the mocks as made me love the draft that much more.

I could have posted this almost to the letter. The exception being that I do watch the occasional college game but because I like football, not because I follow any particular players/team/conference.

Watching the responses on this board during the draft is especially entertaining (some of the implosions :overreact: are priceless :D) and educational since the draftniks often post links to videos and mock sites that favor the players we draft or the ones they think we should have drafted.
 
The draft is like Christmas for me and I get to be a little kid again. Not sure what players the FO will put under the tree, though I hope they fill the voids. I have made my wish list..sometimes I'm right..usually not though...3 days of the NFL Draft..it gives me hope for the up coming season.:fans:
 
Draft is good then I have to go through withdrawal until training camp. Of course college is a nice fix. Too many college teams have softies scheduled first so many of those I don't watch. I get to watch some Texas teams re-load rosters after losing a few players. Houston and Baylor come to mind. Also will focus on Wisconsin after losing most of their Oline.
 
I've yet to figure out why Goodell decided to move the draft to thursday and spread it out over 3 days. Seems like friday, saturday and sunday would have made more sense if he was dead set on changing it to 3 days.
 
I hate the new 3 day format.

It takes the luster off the crawfish boil that we've had on draft weekend for the last 6 yrs. Oh well atleast we will get to hear more of my sons band playing.

@ prime time week day slots. It's all bout the $$$$. (Forget about what would be best for diehard draftniks that made watching the draft popular in the 1st place.) What gets me is God'ell is spinning it like it increases veiwership of the draft. Fact is that veiwership was increasing before the move to Thursday/Friday night. But that wasn't good enough for God'ell.

Here's to hoping somebody finds child porn on God'ells computer. LOL

You took the words right out of my mouth. I LOVE reading the angry posts on here. Very entertaining.

I don't know why people dislike the new format. I actually prefer to eat this meal in enjoyable bite-sized portions. Here's why:

1.) The fact that I can do something FUN on a weeknight, such as 1st round on a Thursday night, is awesome.

2.) And, it leaves room for teams to think about their 2nd round picks instead of going immediately into the 2nd round--Your team now has a lot of time to really evaluate what happened in round 1 and how to proceed with round 2...it helps us, IMO.

3.) It spreads it out, instead of making it a marathon crammed into two days.

WHEN I LOSE INTEREST
I lose interest after round 4. Rounds 5, 6, and 7 are of little interest to me because I think we're just taking blind stabs at guys who will be depth at worst, emergency starters (Yates) at best. I'd like for one of you draftniks to research every Texans 5th, 6th, and 7th rounder to see which ones actually ended up contributing more than just a camp body or depth. That'd be an interesting topic to look at!

WHAT I DISLIKE THE MOST
Obviously, it's the way the TV analysts skip over the Texans or go to commercial.

The NFL, if it wants to make this a high quality event, needs to have more structure in their TV presentation. They're making a small move by not showing the green room footage where a guy is crying as he's on the phone with a team the TV analysts have announced. That irritated me to hell, and they finally stopped it! So much for the "Goodell is ruining the NFL" crowd because THAT is a great improvement he and his gang made.

IMO, why can't the NFLN (since it IS the NFL) be instructed to give thoughtful and intentional focus/analysis on each team as the pick comes in? If you go to commercial, you need to automatically come back and make a quick summary of what team made a pick and show at least 30 or 45 seconds of film on him. and another 30 or 45 seconds of analysis. That's 1 minute for a team, and I think it's possible if they would just try. Instead, they move on and roll it at the bottom of the screen on the ticker tape. Boo! We waited for 4 months for this, so give us at least 1 minute of time to see our guy on TV and to hear him being discussed. /rant.

WHAT I LIKE THE MOST
I like reading the analysis on here as each pick comes in; clicking the links to the videos of our draft pick so that I can see what he did in college. I'll go to the main Texans site and watch their videos of Kubiak or Smith or Phillips discussing each guy, showing footage of each guy, interviewing each guy, etc.

I'm 35 and I enjoy the new format immensely compared to the old format.

I think most younger fans like the new format, too. I didn't like burning up a whole weekend for the draft, tbh. Round 1 is primetime material, as it should be, and by the time the weekend rolls around you can do other things and not feel like you're missing the best part(s) of the draft.

Besides, if a person says he's a hardcore NFL fan...he'd be OK with watching the draft if it were held on a Tuesday at 3 a.m. let alone on Thursday night. Our friends across the pond don't have the luxury of watching NFL stuff at the most optimal times like we do here. And yet I bet THEY are glad they can get whatever morsels of nourishment they can get their hands on. Right? ;)

I think some people (not naming names or anything :whistle:) like to piss and moan about everything.

If you have Verizon as your cell phone carrier, you can download the NFL Mobile app. It gives you tons of real-time news, streaming "live" video analysis of each pick, and war room footage, and more. I just downloaded it last week, and have been using it a lot when I'm away from the house.

It could be most valuable to you if you have Verizon and will be away from a TV for awhile. Then you can use TapaTalk app to access the TexansTalk message board. You can take your draft hobby on-the-go and become a totally self-sustaining, mobilized draftnik now.

Now THAT is a better idea. Friday should be the 1st round.

I just wonder if Goodell thinks the younger fans (the 18 to 30-yr-old crowd) will be out on the town and not near a TV.

On a Thursday night, your ass will be in front of a TV about 99% of the time throughout the year. I think it's the law of averages that made them choose Thursday night. What show on a Thursday night historically draws enough eyeballs of the NFL viewer demographic? None, IMO.

Goodell could really mess with people if he started the draft in reverse. Round 7 is first, on Thursday night, and you can only draft from a certain pool of players...saving the cream of the crop for Saturday's 1st round. LOL. Man oh man would heads explode.

I get what you're saying. However moving the draft has ruined the draft party atmosphere. We still have a party but the draft is just not a big deal. I miss the part of everybody hanging out watching the draft together now. God'ell has ruined that for me and my friends. along with taking hard hits, kickoffs etc... out of the game. Maybe God'ell will get run over by a track before he can do any more damage to the game I love. LOL
 
I have followed the draft since Mel Kiper or his wife would answer his basement phone when you called to order his draft guide. It was several years after he was ESPN's loud mouth draftspert that he did this. Of course, ESPN was just some other cable network trying to make it in the 1980s and really into the 1990s.

I like having a draft season versus the year around stuff that i know see. August through January, I largely just want to watch games. I will drop in to the Mock draft forum to check out some names to either look for or to see if there is talk about someone I saw.

For me, there is a draft season, starting with the 8,000 college bowl games and ending a couple of weeks after the actual draft with draft analysis and grades.

As for the format, my life and wife are flexible enough where either system works for me. I knida of like being able to break down the draft in smaller segments, and not having my whole daytime weekend being killed for the draft. Still there is a more a sense of action in two days than three.

What's funny to me is that the im/explosions occur like in round 5 or later. I mean last year, the Rice Lber (Mr irrelevant) selection spawned more angry (and Illogical) talk than any other of our picks.
