Houston won't take Branch

MATRIX

Waterboy
I was looking around, and found 6 very interesting reports on Branch from his pro day. Looks like the 1st RD lock may have earned himself a spot in RD 2 unless a team feels they can fix the issues that came up.

Here is what I found in 1 report(note, on all updated draft projections...he isn't in the top 20 in the ones I looked at), so here is one scouts assesment on Branch and how he hurt his draft status badly.

Well, what we do know is that Alan Branch is now out of the picture in the wake of his horrendous Pro Day performance. Branch looked lethargic, out of shape and indifferent. That's why I've changed this selection to Amobi Okoye. This is Washington's only pick until Round 5, so look for the team to trade down.

I can go try to locate the source if you need it. but, honestly the results are about the same all over the net.

Think Houston should still consider him?

I'd still consider him at #10 & so will the scouts that are saying these things. His body of work at Michigan speaks for itself. Just because he had a bad workout, doesn't change that. He's big, strong, fast, & will be a disruptive force in the middle. He'd be the final piece on our DL & would definitely collapse the pocket on a regular basis. Although, I'd prefer Okoye over Branch, just because of his upside & pure quickness. Great, here I go drooling again. :D

What does this really mean? Overall, the Big 10 has been way down the past couple of years, IMHO. He looks good against less than steller competition.

I think the same thing about Leon Hall and feel it would be a reach for us to take him at #10.

I was high on Branch at one point but, after poor showing at combine kinda Disappointed me. Guy had chance to be high 1st rd draft choice(top 10) and did not show up in good shape. Now, that tell you what kind of a player he would be in the NFL. So, no Branch thanks.

As is stated elsewhere in this thread, the Big 10(and I am a Michigan fan) has been on the down side lately. Look at the BS(BCS), Michigan was 2 and Ohio State 1...OS beat UoM pretty easy...then got toasted aginst Florida.

Saying his ability at UoM should earn him a 1st RD spot is a stretch. I would think while some may look at him in the 1st...he won't go till the 2nd when teams know he could be good, but don'thave to fork over a huge deal to get him...just incase the combine and now this are a true reflection of his work ethic. If it is, he will never be great or live up to his ability in the NFL.

well he obviously doesnt think it was that bad..

Bensinger: I heard you had a fun pro day. Chiefs' defensive line coach Tim Krumrie worked you out. What do you think of him?

Branch: (laughs) He's a funny, cool guy, but I didn't know what I was getting into (laughs). He knows what he's doing. He knows how to wear guys out. My whole thing was trying not to show that I was tired, even though everybody knew that I was. But I didn't hunch over once. I didn't bend at the waist or put my hands to my knees. I was trying to show that no matter how tired I am, you aren't going to get me to quit.

Bensinger: Tell me about the one-on-one slap fights he was doing.

Branch: Krumrie would grab your shoulders and you had to do something to get his hands off. He's a strong guy. He's a tough guy. It wasn't easy!

Bensinger: Some people afterwards said that you appeared out of shape. What do you say to that?

Branch: I laugh at them and tell them to try doing that with Krumrie! It's impossible to do that drill with somebody and not get tired. They can say I got tired fast, but doing that strenuous activity with someone that strong -- you're going to get tired. If I had known what we were going to do, I would have been able to do a little better.

Bensinger: What did Krumrie say to you afterwards?

Branch: He and a lot of the other coaches said I did a good job. I just laugh about the scouts saying that stuff -- out of shape and became tired quickly. It's just funny to me.

You have to become reasonable when looking at the combine results. Just becuase someone turns in bad times in lifts doesn't mean they are lazy and haven't been doing anything. A personal example:

Past summer I had been training so much on my speed etc., on test out day, I ran a 4.8 and I could tell the coaches thought I hadn't been training or anything, so the next day I had the time me again, I ran a 4.52.

The first time had nothing to do with me not training hard enough, it was just a bad day. Their can always be a misconception if someone doesn't show up to the combine and just tear everything up. Look at demeco ryans, if he had better combine numbers, he wouldn't have been in a texans jersey.

STEROIDS!!!!

:joker:

I kid, man...I kid.

I'm not a big fan of Branch...

I saw him at the combine and he looked fat. I don't care what your numbers are and how you played in college, if you have a fat belly I'm not taking you in the top ten...

alan branch is a manchild, rod wright was never really more than a good DT. injury problems hurt him more than anything.

I'm sure dungy is licking his chops if this is true.

Rod Wright fell how far in the draft, again?

With a very bad shoulder that everyone apparently knew would require season ending ...IR for a year, surgery. Miami, if he comes back 100%, got a second round tallent for a seventh round pick. The pay off will be in '07 for them.

I ddin't know about his shoulder, I had heard he had a bum ankle and I thought I heard that he was considered a bit lazy...which is what I've heard a little bit about Branch; ie. taking plays off ala TJ.

I've witnessed the lead in to the draft since the 70's....the only thing that is constant is the spin and the lies as the draft approaches. Teams try to spread rumors hoping some prospects fall to their part of the draft all the time....you don't know what to believe...so I don't believe much until the teams are on the clock. Last year the Broncos didn't even interview Cutler hoping that the other teams would not sniff out their interest in him. Half this forum had Young falling to the back half of the first round based on rumor last year...I could go on and on...it's just a part of the deal at this time of the year.

I missed it too. I wanted him prety bad last year as I recall. If Manual Wright comes back and has his head on straight...maimi has a pair of young DTs who will be very difficlut to run against.

actually TTP, the best young DT we have is Fred Evans. out of texas state. the two wrights aren't much when it comes to the run anyway.

If I remember correctly, Mario was rumored to take plays off & not go 100%.

AJ was labeled as someone who dropped a lot of balls. Now, while he does drop quite a few, if you had just bought into the drop part of that comment, you would've missed out on one of the best, if not the best, young WR's in the NFL today. See Detroit.

Rumors are rumors. Don't buy into everything you read. Branch will be a very good player for someone.

If it was a RUMOR I wouldn't buy it. Thing is it is all over. The reports on his Pro Day all sum up the same...

Out of shape and lethagic at best.

Never have been a Branch fan. I don't think he fits what the Texans are looking for, regardless of whether he is lazy and/or out of shape or not. I think he is better suited to as a "space eating" NT in a 3-4 defense, and I don't think the Texans were ever really looking at him to begin with. I think they are more interested in Okoye who fits more with their 4-3 defense. JMHO!
