Houston Texans may have a real offense? Oh my!

Anyone else excited that we may start to see an NFL level offense in Houston? I know some are upset that we are going so hardcore on offense, but I personally feel it is needed if we are going to get some respect in this league. The Texans offense has been the laughing stock of football in general for too long.

I personally think that our defense is not in that bad of shape. I truly feel that the schemes we ran (especially last year) didnt allow for the players to make plays. I think we will see immediate improvement next year in defense.

Im ready for the season...HURRY UPPPPPPPPP! Im running out of things to do on Sunday.

i like what we have going offensively. im still unsold about david carr because, yes he hasnt had a great offensive line at any point of his career, he had great protection in the final game against the 49ers (a 4-12 team) and pretty much nearly had the worst game of his career. i do think he takes too much time in the pocket, fails to find open recievers, and doesnt have good touch. im not saying we need a change, but i sure hope that he shows drastic improvement. similar to joey harrington, there will be no excuses this time, especially if we add guys like john runyan to the line.

i agree here. the 4-3 allows babin and peek to play positions theyre accustomed to. i feel that peek may be a tad bone-headed in the run defense, but his passrush is definitely going to improve if he is at the line. the new stances/setups for babin and peek should show an improvement. i still think we need help at linebacker. i like kailee wong, but man i would love to see aj hawk at mlb. of course drafting bush doesnt help, but ya never know what will happen bc CC has thrown out all sorts of different scenarios like trades and such.

I emphatically agree.
 
6 out of the top 10 passing offenses did not make the playoffs.
6 out of the top 10 defenses made the playoffs.

Although, the offense needs to be addressed..it better be countered with a good defense as well.

the cards had top 10 in both and didnt make it.
the reason alot of those passing teams didnt make it is they had no rushing game which we have- if we could get a passing game i think we'd be close enough to the playoffs

Chickens and eggs.

If your base offense is 3 and out, and your defense is on the field for too much of the game, they are gonna get tired.

That being said, the defense was way worse last season and that is why we ended up having the record we did.

We just didn't have enough top players at enough positions. And we are painfully inexperienced and lacking depth at many positions. As much love as people have for various rookies in this draft, rookies make mistakes (fail to execute. ha), and we best hope we get a couple of key FAs and that the players we have been drafting over the last couple of years feel more comfortable in their positions and can just play. (It is hard to play when you are thinking too much--it is just the nature of athletics).

I cannot wait for the season to begin either. I would love to see a product on the field that looks more like NFL football.

Offense
2. Seattle
3. Indy
4. NY
5. Denver
6. Cincy
7. NE
11. Washington
15. Jax
16. Pitt
22. Carolina
23. Tampa

Then their defense:
1. Tampa
2. Chicago
3. Carolina
4. Pitt
6. Jax
9. Washington
11. Indy
15. Denver
17. Seattle
24. NY
26. NE
28. Cincy

The average ends up being ranked 11.91 in offense, and 12.2 in defense in the NFL. Interestingly enough, only 12 teams can make the playoffs which seems to be the average rankings of the teams that made last year's playoffs.
Side note* Both Superbowl teams (Seattle and Pittsburgh) combined offense/defensive rankings were exactly the same at 9.5.

Instead of Reggie Bush, you should take sombody such as SanAntonio Holmes, Chad Jackson, Vernon Davis, or D'Brickashaw Ferguson. But since your GM is Casserly your probally gonna pick the fan favorite or the best college player avaible even though you have absolutly no use for him.

Isn't it great that the new defensive guy from KC brings such great experience indicating our D will improve? Also, I understand Kube's Offense is run oriented so another reason for you to be ecstatic.:yahoo:

Each of the 32 teams would have a use for Bush. If you don't like him, say so. A comment that Texans have "no use" is ridiculous.

well i'm a defensive guy...i could watch defensive football games all day and be happy...but with the majority of the money on this team going towards the offense it makes sense to shore it up first...if we can get the offense to work...where the majority of their drives aren't 3 and out...then our defense will progress...remember last year our defense was on the field twice as much as our offense...we just need to get the right lineman here...add a veteran receiver (cough bruce cough isaac bruce) and everydown TE and our offense i think under kubiak will be much better...the defense will progress as long as the offense is doing it's thing

Cincy (17), New England (16.5) and Chicago (15.5) rounded out the bottom while Indy (7), Jacksonville (7.75) and the two superbowl teams (9.5 each) rounded out the top.

Cincy (although having a #6 offense) got hurt with the #28th ranked defense.

How many Super Bowl winners over the past 5 years, 10 years, 20 years, have had a top 5 defense?

I'm willing to bet most, if not all, of them had top 5 defenses.

I'm also willing to bet a lot more of them DID NOT have top 5 offenses.

We can start by looking at the Steelers this year. # 4 defense. Only mediocre offense....

Sorry to rain on your parade but im pretty sure the St Loius Rams did not have a top five defense.

I think they might have been ranked 10th overall, but remember, the Rams beat a Bud Adams team.....
 
According to the pro-football reference that Kaiser posted, the Patriots of 2001 had a 24th ranked defense with a 19th ranked offense.
2003 New England defense was #7 with offense at #18
2004 New England defense was #9 with offense at #7
1998 Denver Broncos defense was #12 with offense at #3

Only defenses I'm seeing in the top 5 (superbowl winners) were the Ravens (#1) in 2000, and the Buccaneers (#1) in 2002. But that's only for the past 8 years.
 
Preferably, you would want a good offense and a good defense. They feed off each other. (And last year is the inverse of that equation. :( )

One reason why old Buddy Ryan hated the run and shoot stuff so much is that they scored too fast and the defense had to be on the field too much.

A good offense, with the ability to run, keeps your defense off the field. It can also attract good free agents who want to play for a good offense--better players equal better play.

A good defense can get you good field position and short fields with turnovers and more chances to be back on offense.

Both ain't easy to achieve year after year.
 
I would preferably have a good offense and good defense. Yes, defense wins championships, but having a piss poor offense and an amazing defense won't get it done (look at the Bears the two times they've made the playoffs). I'm interested to see what Richard Smith does with our defense though.

A good defense will also get you some stops.. that way, you're not just trading points, and the winner isn't necessarily whoever has the ball last.

Offenses win games, Defenses win Championships........ they work hand in hand. You need them both. If you don't have a good offense(and you have to define "good offense") you may not get to the Championship game. If you hold the opponents to a field goal over four quarters, you won't win the game, if your offense was shut out.

The Run and Shoot didn't score too fast. There were numerous drives of 10 plus plays. And meanwhile, if the defense was a great defense, they wouldn't be on the field more than a few plays at a time....

Very true but from another point of view, sometimes the best defense is a good offense.
 
i really dont think our D was that bad even last year, but i like us switching to a 4-3, maybe we can actually stop a rb from getting a 100 yrds every game this year.
