Houston Texans 2025 Training Camp

Not players, but for me, it all comes down to Nick Caley and Cole Popvich. The whole offense is basically sitting in their laps right now.
OL getting steamrolled? Scheme to their strengths. Mix it up so the defense doesn’t get comfy, use different formations, throw in some motion, keep opponents guessing.
WRs not getting separation? Design/scheme routes based on time to throw, not some dream of a consistent 3 to 5 second pocket...that doesn’t exist.
QB a little shaky? Script some confidence throws. Get him in rhythm before asking him to launch missiles into tight windows.
WRs and TEs dropping passes? Someone find the old school stickum jar (kidding).
TEs not blocking? Give them a one-way flight to the Eastern Antarctic Plateau, non-refundable (again, kidding).
Execution matters, but the onus is on Caley and Popvich to put these guys in position to have the best chance to succeed.
You know I like to think the coaches are smart enough to do that, but the problem is the opposing DC will figure out what they're doing and create a workaround.
Back to square 1.
So it comes down to a quality line as well as smart schemes - especially against quality Dlines.

Yep. It all goes the way to Run & Shoot heaven. But I like this concept of a swarm O and D. Just play hard, relentless football. No gimmicks. BTW is it me or does TC not capture as much attention as it used to? Texans web seems to be three days late reporting news from the present one. Makes it worse when you live in Cowboy country.

I no

I noticed the same thing. Seems like a lot more shoulder shrugging than a few years back. For me, i love camp..especially the first two weeks or so.

Forgot that Coach Caley is a backward cap guy, like me. :)
He can wear his cap anyway he wants as long as these guys are on their details and technique. I am so tired of a sloppy and predictable offense. He can even put a pencil in his ear, just make these guys look nasty and well coached. This team can be special if he is elite. Do you always go backwards, or just when it is time to get serious?

Pretty high praise about the o'line coming from Danielle Hunter.

Q: On if he notices anything different with the offensive line

Hunter:
“Oh, right away. They did a good job of keeping us a little bit further away from [QB] C.J. [Stroud]. That was noticeable on day one. But, it's up to us as a defensive line to adapt. From what I've seen so far, they've been doing a pretty good job."

Q: On what in particular is different about the offensive line

Hunter:
“You could definitely tell there's a change of technique in the way they set as an offensive line. I think it's for the better and hopefully it's going to help us win some football games this year.”

Metchie drops two punts with Casserio looking straight at him. Not so bold prediction - Metchie is cut and Barrios (sp) makes the team as primary PR and WR on PRN basis. The bigger question is 6 or 7 guys. Probably 6. I say Watson is the other guy after the big four. Later Metchie and X man,

I love Metchie the person. Hes overcome a lot and is just the best of the best as a person.

But i never liked the pick. Unlike others who claimed his magic power was getting open, i wasnt that impressed with that part of his game, or any other part. To me he was just ok. 4th rounder. Did some things well, but nothing really stood out as special to me. Compounding the error was trading up in the 2nd round to get him.

Add this to Juice, Green, and likely Fischer and Nick’s draft record is fair but far less than stellar.

Short snippet but interesting he's working as if he is playing RT...I know he's played both in camp so far...

Also, hard to say until there's more on tape but he looks more balanced in his set and not leaning like he sometimes did on his college tape. Looks like a conscious effort by him.

Feet look good though...Nice quick and precise...Good balance....

Looks encouraging...real test will be in live reps and when guys hit him with a bunch of different moves...

Going on Nick's draft record, O-line is a clear deficient area for drafting. Fingers crossed on Ersery. I also think there are moments he out smarts himself trying to trade back, trade up etc.

I like EDC in Baltimore who basically trades back and to see who falls but they're in another league of an organization/situation.

That may change now that we're going more in the "New England" direction on offense. A system Nick is more familiar with & has more experience evaluating those players.

I think Ersery isnt that far away from locking up RT. Its obviously early, but both RT candidates have had an equal shot, and Ersery is clearly the guy from everything ive heard from multiple sources. I think Blake becomes a backup and the rookie gets the start day one at RT.

LG is interesting. Thought it was 100% Laken T, but this UDFA Jaylon Thomas is getting quality first team reps. Is he doing that well…or is Laken playing like crap. Dont have enough info on that to know.

Tomorrow should start to bring more answers…but this line is still very unsettled.

So we have Mixon has a foot problem, Chubb is looking like yesterdays paper and now I’m thinking about some of the very good RB that we passed up. It amazes me how aging RB’s when looking a a long season seem to be a weak link. I saw this coming and wonder why a GM sits on a brewing injury storm while not grabbing some young studs in the middle rounds to fill in during the recovery times.

They addressed the position by using a top 100 pick on it with Jaylin Smith. They also added Ronald Darby as the vet Jeff Okudah addition but it didn’t work out. Now they have also thrown some lottery tickets at the position in Myles Bryant, Damon Arnette, and now Arthur Maulet.

I’d say they value CB depth fairly high. They also added Tremon Smith, who is a ST ace but an upgrade at CB also over the guy he’s essentially replacing (Boyd).
When I say CB3 I mean someone who can play instead of Stingley and Lassiter on the outside. I indeed hope that can be Jaylin Smith but it excludes guys like Myles Bryant who are essentially slot only corners at this point in by heir careers.

It’s still a major area of concern for me. Hopefully the preseason games can show us where Smith is at in his early development.
