Gary Kubiak was tasked with a complete rebuild. He took the worst team in football and made them relevant. Bill OBrien is just reaping the rewards of all the hard work Kubiak and Rick Smith put in and has rode their coat tails while running off the best talent from that regime in an insecurity purge. Still he hasnt managed one AFC CG appearance while every other AFC South team has. OBrien has mortgaged the immediate draft future on a flag machine left tackle. He has burned 3rd round picks on a RB he doesnt utilize and on a project CB that is beyond repair. Trying to compare the talent evaluation between Rick Smith and Bill OBrien is laughable.

If people really did their homework they would look up the stats on hit/miss rates among all the different draft slots and see where Rick Smith ranks in that regard - they would feel silly.

Draftniks here just get their panties in a bunch when the GM cant seem to hit on 4th round or later guys or even funnier that they GM doesnt select the player that they "scouted".
I seem to remember BOB taking over a 2-14 team that got the #1 pick in the draft and RS figured out a way to screw that draft up. That's unless you believe that BOB was making those picks as a rookie HC with no experience in the NFL. (I dont)

I don't know how you can say he's riding on Kubiak/Rick success & he ran off the best talent from that regime in the same sentence.

But you did.
LMAO

Unbelieveable but true.

People around here go to great links to try to prove BOB's a terrible HC and they fail. All they really need to post to prove their point is 51-7.

A couple of years ago this post might've had more merit. We're now 6 years into ob's tenure and you still think he's riding kubiak's coattails? Just how does that opinion creep in between your ears?

Rick Smith nailed a lot of first round draft picks. He hit those well above the average. The rest of his drafts were dumpster fires. I'm not sure how that's even in question.

You know that 2-4 team wasn't the same as the 2-14 team Kubiak took over.

Just like Kubiak's 12-4 team was a paper tiger, his 2-14 team got caught up in front office infighting.

Front office infighting used to be a theme down on Kirby through 2 different regimes. Wonder why.

One reason the Texans and Deshaun Watson may not get a contract extension finalized this offseason
Mark Lane

Now that quarterback Deshaun Watson has completed his third professional season, he is eligible to work out a contract extension with the Houston Texans.
However, just because the two-time Pro Bowl field general has met that threshold of eligibility doesn’t mean a contract extension will be worked out in the 2020 offseason.

According to Michael Colangelo of the Touchdown Wire, there are five reasons why the 2020 offseason will be crazy in the NFL. One of them is related to the fact it is the final year of the collective bargaining agreement.
This is the final year in the collective bargaining agreement so things get a bit wonky — like having the ability to use two tags.
The other thing to consider with the CBA is that no one knows what the next deal will look like. Players may think they’ll get more of the revenue pie, and in that case signing a long term deal won’t be great if more money comes to the market in the next CBA. Teams may also want to have shorter deals since there is uncertainty in the market.
Watson and his representation, David Mulugheta of Athletes First, still have another offseason to get something worked out, 2021, and the Texans would more than likely exercise their fifth-year option to make it 2022. The new CBA will be in place by then, and Watson could get a larger contract compared to one signed prior to the expiration of the current CBA.

The Texans’ brass is well aware they can start to negotiate with Watson and his team.
“I can tell you publicly, though, that we obviously want the Deshaun Watson here for a long, long time,” coach Bill O’Brien said on Jan. 13. “We want him to be a Houston Texan for his career. He is a great person, he’s a great football player and he means a lot to this organization, to this city, to this league.”

The Texans want Watson around for a long time, but the collective bargaining agreement may get in the way of finalizing that commitment between Houston and Watson.

you want to create a human shield for OBrien and downplay the significance of what Rick Smith did for the current roster - go ahead. You must be like the resident OBrien concubine and equate every move he makes with genius? You love him as GM? You love giving away 3 first round picks on an offensive line that still sucks and all because you ran off Brooks, Brown and Jones? You like giving away two 3rd round picks for backups? Drafting a 2nd round tackle in the 1st round to try him out at guard? LMAO. Drafting a TE in the 3rd round each year as some sort of sick and twisted fetish? Giving away the best run defender because he made you mad and grumpy?

Thank God Rick SMith went "rogue" and drafted Deshaun Watson on his own with no input from the coach right? LOL its really no secret why a certain faction feels the way they do about Watson and OBrien. The obvious line in the sand has almost nothing to do with product and everything with pomp and circumstance of just "being right".

OBrien is over here REUPPING the marginal Rick SMith guys like Whitney Mercilus instead of "his" guys like DJ Reader!! LMAOOOOO it might be easier and much quicker if you want to list out or explain HOW this hack of a football man has done anything to help this team win with his own signature or imprint?? He's a trash ass coach, a trash ass GM and trash ass person in general and if the owner had any testicular fortitude and actually cared about the direction of this franchise he would have fired his monkey ass years ago and found someone who knew the difference between his mouth and his A##hole.

This team wins because of the talent Rick Smith had in place before he "stepped down" - this team continues to win in spite of the many OBrien follies as a HC and now GM - thus the phrase "riding his coat tails" is applicable since the definition does not seem to have a term limit and the nucleus of the current team is Rick Smith guys. So while you guys go riding around with AFC South Champs flags flying from your pickups remember the man who made it possible. RICK SMITH!!

But hey OBrien will be here for the next 10 years so Im sure we will get to see his mastery of the EVAL and CAP process while he continues to flush and purge the Rick Smith guys in order to establish his own dynasty! It all makes sense now! It was a 20 year process the whole time, we just needed to be patient!

Good stuff as usual Rico. It’s good to see you’re able to be yourself without any push back.

So much fail in the little bit I did read I won't bother putting myself through your BS.

Saying RS was a good GM is the same as saying Casserly was a good GM.

This needed to stand on it's own.

To be fair though, Mercilus probably works his ass off in practice. Seems this staff is all about practice more than actual games.

Add in the fact he’s a very good locker room guy just like JoJo. Have to have those type of guys around.

All Pro
9. Deshaun Watson, Houston Texans
Watson continues to light up the highlight reels, but the week-to-week consistency still needs work. For the second straight year, Watson had six games that earned an 80.0-plus grade, and those are the games in which he looks like an MVP candidate capable of carrying a team. However, he also had three games that graded under 50.0, and those games usually involve poor ball security and taking too many sacks. Watson ranked among the league’s best in big-time throws once again, but in order to take the next step as a true MVP candidate, he must cut down on the faults that have plagued him to low game grades in the past. It’s a difficult balance, as Watson’s high-risk, high-reward style pays off more often than not, but it’s still leading to too many games in which his poor play is too much for Houston to overcome.
Key Stat from QB Annual: Watson averaged 0.17 EPA per play on scramble-drill passes, well above the league average of 0.02.

I definitely trust OBrien and Easterby to get this contract right. They have a long track record of successful contract structuring and negotiation

Not only that, they let the infighting continue, allowing one to undermine the other.

Focusing on one guys vision, then the other guys vision, then another guys vision & not having a vision of their own.
What are the chances that standing on the outside and looking in, Cal knows this to be the issue. Giving O'Brien this amount of power to build his structure how he see's fit should hopefully eliminate vision vs vision infighting.

It's a gamble.
