Houston Cougars and Conferences

Even though OSU losing will probably hurt Texas in the long run I couldn't help but root for U of H. Congrats to them and their fans on the win.

I would like to address some U of H guy that called into 610 today stating that Texas, A and M, etc were scared to have Houston in the Big 12 for a few reasons. One he named was recruiting. I think he called out the fans too stating that we would not want U of H in the Big 12.

Maybe I should preface my response by saying that the Cougars have always been my 2nd favorite team so maybe I don't represent all UT fans. Personally I have always wanted U of H in the Big 12. I miss the Cougars of old and would love to see them be a national power in the Big 12. Honestly, the Big 12 needs it and Texas needs it.

Living in Austin and being a Horns fan it's hard to get real excited by expecting blowouts every week. Almost every week it's not if Texas will win but how they will look and how many points they will hang on some weak opponent. Most seasons it seems to always come down to 1 or 2 competitive games. It would be great if the Big 12 were like the SEC.

I wish the NCAA would relegate teams from major conferences like they do in European soccer. Basically if you finish in the bottom 2 or 4 you drop to a lower league and you promote the top teams from the lower league to the top league. Since teams like Baylor cannot compete they need to be relegated to some weak conference and bring up teams like TCU and Houston.

Baylor dropping would be good for their fans and fans of the major conference. They would have a chance to compete and we wouldn't have to look at them as a practice game every season. If they finish at the top of their lesser conference then they can come back up for a season to prove themselves the following year.

This would probably never happen however it would give schools like Houston mired in these lesser conferences a chance to play for something of real meaning (finishing at the top of your conference gets you promoted to a major conference, which in turn gives you a shot at the NC the following season).

Well said Hookem. I couldn't agree more. I know Big 12 schools aren't scared of Houston by any means so I would strongly disagree with the caller and those that agree. I do believe they are all tired of Baylor. I think Houston would make a fine addition to the Big 12. Recruitment would only get better.

I like the idea of promoting and relegating teams. Every 5 years or so it should be done. Nix the teams that do poorly, promote the good ones.

Please do not sleep on Baylor as U of H comeback is due to him and he is now doing he same in Waco. U of H needs to get out of C-USA if they can maintain 8-9 win seasons over the next few years and would either go to the WAC or MWC. TCU for sure should be moved up into the big 12. I think most of the Big 12 North teams are horrible so it makes the conference look weak. Hell Dan Hawkins is one of the main reasons Boise is where it is today, but is sucking it up in Colorado and a lot of that is due to not removing his son from the starting QB. Kansas had a miracle year and Iowa State just plan sucks. Mizzou almost lost to Bowling Green.

I don't see UH moving to the MWC or WAC for the simple fact the way things are now its a laterel move. UH can do the same things that Boise and Utah have done if they put up undefeated seasons. The only way that UH would move to one those leagues is if they gain BCS status. The way it is now so the league is thought of a little more than CUSA but the travel costs would negate the bonus in league reputation.

UH will never be invited into the Big12.

A more likely scenario would be the MWC. Currently there are 9 teams playing football in the MWC, three of which are currently ranked.

BYU #9
Colorado State
Utah #17
TCU #16
Air Force
San Diego State
UNLV
Wyoming
New Mexico

Add in Houston, Boise State and possibly UTEP or SMU and create a 12 team, 2-division conference that would be worthy of inclusion in the corrupt monopolistic BCS and start sharing the cash cow that grazes and poops in their pastures.

In the meantime, the Cougars need to continue their current success. Win, win, win! Keep the recruiting going strong.

The University is heading into an ambitious $233 million dollar master plan http://www.uh.edu/about/initiatives/masterplan/ that includes more dorms, an arts district, a retail district and more learning spaces. The master plan also calls for a stadium expansion. Hopefully, as the student population on campus increases, more students will attend the games. Actual work on this master plan has already begun.

Last year, our average attendance was in the 22K-23K range but more students than ever have been attending games over the past few years. Robertson Stadium currently accommodates 32K, (which will more than likely be sold out for the Texas Tech game in two weeks.

I wish there was a way of attracting more UH alumni and the average Houston citizens to the games. If you have not seen these Cougars in action, you are missing the best football in Houston.

I would add Fresno State before I would add SMU. I think the city of Houston would love to have more Houstonians going there instead of leaving for other schools

Hey can someone give me a brief lesson on why UH didn't follow most of the other Texas schools into the Big 12 when the SWC dissolved?

To Sibley, that was proof enough that something was up - something that wasn't going to sit well with state politicos with allegiances to either the six soon-to-be snubbed SWC universities or the communities served by those schools. Or, as was the case with Baylor graduate Sibley, to both.

It was time, as one state politician with a vested interest in the matter later recalled, "to turn loose the dogs of war."

The pack included Dobermans, a veritable who's who of Baylor and Texas Tech alumni. Ann Richards, then governor, and Bob Bullock, then lieutenant governor, were Baylor grads. Sibley held a high-ranking position on the powerful Senate Finance Committee.

Tech unleashed its own influential alums: John Montford, president pro tempore of the Senate; Robert Junell, destined to become chairman of the House Appropriations Committee; and Speaker of the House Pete Laney.

Sibley threatened a cut in funding for UT and A&M if they bolted on their own. Junell collared UT president Robert Berdahl and spelled out what was at stake.

"As I recall, it wasn't a very veiled threat to cut budgets if Tech was left behind," Berdahl recalls
