Homegrown Talent

College Texan

Waterboy
I think the we should try to get our team the best homegrown talent. many teams do a great job of evaluating players in their state. I think texas has many great players and we probly need to do a better scouting job. If they want to win the fans back after this horrrible season which wouldn't be so critisized if we took DJ instead of TJ, imo, they need to get us the best players from here since we know them better fro watching more of their games.

Along these lines, the announcers had wandered off into a discussion of Texas high school football during the Colorado/Texas Tech game against UT. I forget now which one it was. What I do remember is the announcer quipping that every year there are over 300 high school football players in the state of Texas who become scholarship players in a college football program. So yes, I agree with you. Texas produces a hell of a lot of football players. How many make it to the pro's would be interesting to know.

yeah, just look at how many runningbacks come from texas and even louisiana, I read somewhere that the houston area produces some of the best fundamentally sound players in the nation

Since UH switched to the 3-4 defense I wonder if the Texans are keeping an eye on any of their players. It could definitely give us an advantage.

Yeah because UH's defense is so stellar.

I didn't mention UH having a stellar defense. There might be some good 3-4 type players they have over there and I'm just wondering if the Texans have noticed anything at all. UH didn't have a good defense last year but Standford Routt got drafted high by the Raiders. Maybe there's a guy like that this year for UH who will shoot up the draft boards because he's a good player and he had a good combine workout.

I don't know if you've noticed but Tulane is kind of dealing with some issues right now. The fact that we are even suiting up and playing every week is a story in itself. We have zero home games, our "locker room" consists of a room of folding chairs with numbers taped on them, we have had to reschedule our 3 road games because of 3 different hurricanes. We are going to play 12 games in 12 stadiums. Almost all of our players and coaches lost everything they own. We have very few of our fans attending games because our students are spread out across the country for the semester. And our entire AD budget is a couple hundred thousand dollars that was given to us by the NCAA.

So congratulations on your win against us. It was far from a fair game because of what our team is going through right now.

i have never really bought into the whole homegrown talent is the best way to go. yeah it might get some fans to come to games that watched someone play in high school, but the best way to attract fans is have a winning team. if a texas player is the best player for us then take him but don't do so just because he is from texas. texas does have a lot of players in the nfl, they are number two behind california.

Teams don't look for guys with system experience...they want physical potential. Just because you play in a similar system doesn't mean you are a better player than a guy in another system.

Good enough to beat Tulane 35-14.

It will take me a couple of days to complete, but i am going down every NFL roster just to settle this once and for all..i am pretty sure Texas puts more players in the NFL than california.

i was watching a florida high school football game on thursday and they showed the graphic, not sure on the exact numbers but were close to these:
Cali 199
Texas high 170's
Florida 173
Georgia 99 or 93
and i wanna say Ohio to round out the top five

Just to clarify - I don't necessarily think Texas players are automatically better for the Texans than any other players or that the scouting department has an advantage in watching tape, etc. of Texas students. For starters, (and please let me know if this is truly different), I just think that a high school football player is not on any NFL team's radar. The NFL isn't the NBA, so a HS kid is still 4-5 years of development away from NFL potential, and a lot can happen in that time.

Now college? Very different story.

I'm just trying to say that it is possible to find a few hidden gems from the smaller colleges in the state. I know A&M Kingsville has some good players from their school in the NFL.

Just curious - who is in the NFL from A&M Kingsville?

And yeah, the Texans Scouting needs to look around some more. They could do better.

I would hope the Texans are looking for better players than "good enough to beat Tulane".
