The Great Blue North Draft reports that the 2007 draft will be deep in safeties........just what the Texans ordered:

July 17
(12:01 AM): Safety first week’s focus… Perhaps the most interesting position in the 2007 draft class are the safeties. Indeed, there seem to be an inordinate number of very good prospects at the position floating just below the national radar. In fact, the position is so intriguing it's where we are going to focus all week starting with the featured player in today's edition of the Players to Watch for the 2007 draft series. link

Take a look at the prospects on this page........and the size on some!

two words: LaRon Landry

Good pick.............A little bit of weight and he seems good to go in the NFL:

LaRon Landry
From Conor Dowley

Position: Safety
School: LSU

Status: Junior

Height: 6-2

Weight: 187

40-Yard Dash: 4.48 (EST)

Positives:
LaRon Landry may be the best pure free safety in the nation right now. His coverage skills in center field are virtually second to none, and he hits surprisingly hard for his light size. He's also one of the few safety prospects in recent years who is a total ball hawk, flowing to the ball and the play better than the majority of defenders in the nation.

Negatives:
Landry's frame is a little smallish for the typical NFL safety, and some teams may try to make him gain weight so as to help improve his durability at the NFL level. He also sometimes tries to go for the big play instead of the sure thing, and that has created problems in the past.

Overview:
Ever since his debut as a freshman, Landry has been one of LSU's top defenders and has steadily risen up the ranks as one of the best defensive backs in the nation. He has improved every year and should become a solid free safety in the NFL for years to come.

I have a friend on the LSU football team and he says LaRon Landry is the most impressive football player he's ever played with. He says he is the most physically impressive player on LSU's team. I hope the Titans get him!

Laron is a beast he is better than Sean Taylor when he came out. He is not 187 pounds i think he was as a sophmore but he is huge now he looks like a linebacker. He has been the best safety since he was a sophmore.

We won't be getting Laron so why does it matter how beastly he is. If he's better than Sean Taylor than there's no way we will get him because we won't be picking that high.

C'mon now man, Laron is good, but would not have gone first round last year, if you look around at early mocks, he is still barely a first rounder. He is good yes, and he has been LSU's top defensive player for 2 years now, but he is not ST good coming out of Miami. I promise you that. He may be a better person, but as far as talent, he is not there.

i love laron as much as anyone, but he isn't as good as sean. taylor in 03 was on another level and i don't think we will see a season that that in awhile. laron is a big guy, but not the size of sean. he is around 6' 1" 210 but is a big 210, the guy is a monster in person. i think if laron can hang onto the ball and bo pelini lets him loose, he will have a huge year and should have a good chance at the thorpe.

Just FYI, LaRon is the highest rated player in the new NCAA 2007 video game. He is 1 of 3 who are a 99 overall and if you sort the list his name is at the top of every other person in the NCAA.

I wouldn't take that into account too much, NCAA 04 had Mike Williams and Reggie Williams at 97 speed and had a lot of other players drastically overrated, but interesting nonetheless.

What's with all this gun play this year?
July 21
(3:00 PM):Top DB prospect in OK corral shootout… Miami FS Brandon Meriweather, one of the top 2-3 rated safeties for the 2007 draft, was involved in a bizarre shooting earlier today. According to preliminary reports, A Miami Hurricanes reserve safety was shot in the buttocks when confronted in his yard Friday morning by an unknown assailant, who fled after another player returned the gunfire, police said. Meriweather fired three shots at a fleeing assailant who had shot and wounded teammate Willie Cooper, a junior safety with the Hurricanes. The incident took place outside the pairs home. According to police, Meriweather used his gun legally. No word though if hit anything. For his part, Cooper suffered only a minor injury.
