Gibbs: Contract not problem for Taylor

By David Elfin
THE WASHINGTON TIMES

Safety Sean Taylor's ongoing absence from the team isn't because of unhappiness with his contract as had been believed, Washington Redskins coach Joe Gibbs said yesterday.
"I really don't think [it's] contractual," Gibbs said after the first of 14 days of voluntary organized team activities that followed offseason workouts that began March 21. "I think Sean understands he's got a contract. And we expect him to honor it."
Having yet to hear from Taylor this offseason, Gibbs recently sent contract negotiator Eric Schaffer to meet with Taylor's agent, Drew Rosenhaus, but to no avail. Rosenhaus maintained his no-comment policy on Taylor's situation yesterday.

wow, I still don't understand why people sign a contract and are unhappy after a year of it..Yes, I understand that the article says it isn't about the contract, but how do you explain him not there and nothing being said about personal reasons or whatever?

Meanwhile the guy we got at #10 made a decent case for rookie of the year and even a ProBowl bid and he was probably one of the hardest, most willingest to learn rookies I have seen in ages.

When they tell you it's not about the money...you can be darn sure it's about the money!

I cant deny that I wanted us to trade up for Taylor last year. Cant deny that I was a little disapointed with them taking Robinson... untill i saw him play. Us fans are pretty hard on Caserly during the draft. This year everyone was got their panties in a wad about not taking DJ. I think Caserly knows what he is doing just based on prior Texan drafts. There was a reason that they didnt take DJ and they did take Travis Johnson. Thank god we dont have any assclowns on the team like Taylor, Moss, Shockey, Owens... ect.. All great and all think they are far better than they really are.
Capers made it clear to his "The U" boys that they are expected to be at the nonmandatory/mandatory workouts. Both of our "The U" boys were at practice as expected. Looks like we got the cream of the crop when it comes to Hurricane players and attitudes that comes along with them.

do we really have to start a new thread when the same news about the st situation comes out each week. it's worse than when the first page of the board was filled with threads either for or against trading up for him. we are glad we didn't get him, i get it and i think every other pro st fan does as well, unless you are waiting for buffsoilder to reply. also, i am the biggest andre fan here, but before we give him the award for greatest character person in the world lets remember that he was suspended from the team in the spring of 2002 for cheating on a test. glad to see he has left that behavior in college.

I dont get why everyone has to come back and hate on Taylor. Its amazing how much we defend the TEAM (who are owned by billionaires) but we are mad at players who want to get as much as they can at their job just like any of us would.

All of you are assuming why he is missing which we know what happens when folks assume. I am happy with Dunta but quite frankly I would have been just as happy with Taylor.

Let's face it we have a more structured staff here in Houston than Washington does. I think if Taylor is here under our staff we are all drooling over what he did last year as well and Dunta in Was we'd have the same post.

This TEAM has plenty of ASSCLOWNS ......see Victor Riley #1. Dont give me that we have upstanding citizens crap.

I for one don't understand why a person signs a contract and AFTER ONE YEAR is upset with it.(by rumors) I understand if you sign maybe a 4 year deal and making the probowl 3 year in a row and you want some compensation.. TO is in the same boat.. these players want top dollar (and i don't blame them) but then they sign a multiyear contract and (in TO's case) have a good year and all of a sudden want to renegotiate the contract after a year.. I mean why don't they just sign a 1 year deal then (I am being sarcastic because I know the reason they don't)

Sounds like the best player to get is one who DOES NOT have Drew Rosenhaus as their agent!

Players can change agents at any time. The owners and players have to fix it somehow. It seems like Rosenhaus gets a new player and they instantly need a new contract even if the player just signed a long-term contract. I think the players should pay a penalty for holding out before they have 1 year left on a current contract.

Knowing what we all know now, I can't imagine anyone actually being disappointed that we took DRob instead of trading up (& losing at least 1 draft pick) for STaylor. :deadhorse

What about teams who cut players who have more than one year left? They aren't living up to their end of the contract either.

Actually they are. The contracts specifically allow the teams to terminate at any time and the players know it. The teams aren't breaching the contracts at all. As a practical matter though, there is certainly an argument that if teams can ditch someone for underperforming, the players will naturally expect to get a raise for overperforming. Then again, what exactly is overperforming? Sean Taylor is already the highest paid safety in the NFL and he certainly wasn't the best last year. How can he claim he overperformed?

6 year max of 40 million.. gets incentives if makes probowl

his career has be turbulent so for (off the field) ..I don't know if this is the doings of the agent or what.

only thing I found so far about Ed Reed (who is probably the best safety iin the NFL right now) is 5 year 6.2 million.. granted Reed drafted 24th and taylor 5.. and yes I believe they are playing different positions.. but my point is.. Reed has played great the last 2 years..I could see him wanting a bump in pay..but Taylor?

Of course. Otherwise no one would ever be cut. I just think if you are going to rip a player{not Taylor specifically} for wanting more, you should also rip a team for cutting/Brunelling. It's a two way street and some people just see the TO side.

Your boy only reason he didn't make the work-out was

i know he said this but he is still practicing so i don't think it is that big of a deal. he is in miami keeping in shape and working out with players like reed, james, javon walker, and andre. it's not like he is on a couch for the summer. it a very stupid thing for him to say, he might as well have told the truth and said that he wasn't there because of his contract.

We all know if Taylor gets like 6 ints this year, no one will bring up his hold out. We also have to remeber that holding out doesn't diminish the players abilities, Barry Sanders held out like 3 or 4 times and he averaged 1500 yards for his career.
