Sims' impressive play bumps Gallery to guard

By Jerry McDonald, STAFF WRITER

NAPA -- It was the changing of the guard no one expected.

Except, possibly, Barry Sims.

Although nothing is set in stone until Al Davis picks up a chisel, it appears Sims held off first-round draft pick Robert Gallery and will open the season at left tackle.

Gallery, meanwhile, spent much of the Tuesday morning walk-through and afternoon practice working as the second-team left guard, and could dislodge Frank Middleton as the starter before the opener in Pittsburgh on Sept.12.

Although coach Norv Turner talked mostly in general terms about getting the best five linemen on the field at the same time, he said of Sims, "Barry's playing so well I see him playing left tackle in our opening game."

Sims has some experience defying the odds. An undrafted free agent, he held off first-round draft picks Mo Collins and Matt Stinchcomb to become the Raiders left tackle.

Kind of surprised to not see him earning a starting spot or being used over at RT like Gross was last year.

That is amazing, for all I heard about Gallery was plug him in a LT and he'll be there for 12 years. Now he can't make the starting line-up. All reports were also that he was doing fine. I didn't realize Oakland's O-line was so skilled. Maybe we can trade for him, if they can't use him.

That is amazing, and fascinating to. Obviously this Simms guy has got to be
really good, and maybe some people had him under rated, but the bigger
story has got to be that a lot of people had to have Gallery way over rated.
You might pay Gallery the kind of bucks he got for a once in a generation LT,
but it's a stretch to pay any two guards(in total), the kind of money Gallery
got. And he might be playing guard - #2 overall in this years draft !

Gallery didn't play against the Cowboys last weekend but they said he had an elbow injury.

Maybe that's been a problem for him during training camp. All I heard when any football experts talked about this guy was that he was a load, he had a ton of pancake blocks and he was a lock to be a terrific pro player.

Interesting that he's not starting. Maybe Norv Turner doesn't like to play rookies?
