Sims' impressive play bumps Gallery to guard
By Jerry McDonald, STAFF WRITER
NAPA -- It was the changing of the guard no one expected.
Except, possibly, Barry Sims.
Although nothing is set in stone until Al Davis picks up a chisel, it appears Sims held off first-round draft pick Robert Gallery and will open the season at left tackle.
Gallery, meanwhile, spent much of the Tuesday morning walk-through and afternoon practice working as the second-team left guard, and could dislodge Frank Middleton as the starter before the opener in Pittsburgh on Sept.12.
Although coach Norv Turner talked mostly in general terms about getting the best five linemen on the field at the same time, he said of Sims, "Barry's playing so well I see him playing left tackle in our opening game."
Sims has some experience defying the odds. An undrafted free agent, he held off first-round draft picks Mo Collins and Matt Stinchcomb to become the Raiders left tackle.

Kind of surprised to not see him earning a starting spot or being used over at RT like Gross was last year.
