The Good:

David Car is number one overall in the NFL with a QB rating of 113.6. Number seven in passing TD’s and has only one pick. This rating doesn’t account for the fumbles, but it does mean Carr is making progress this year—a very good thing. He is averaging 10.7 yards per catch; not exactly dinking and dunking down the field even though our offense calls for that. He and Johnson are the best offensive players on the Texans right now.

Andre Johnson is number three over all in the NFL with 309 total yards and 14.7 yards average. Very nice! I hope he makes the Pro-Bowl again.

We are 13th overall in rushing with 239 yards at 3.8 yards per carry. This is actually good considering that we have been so far behind that we’ve had to give up on the run late in the game. If we could keep it close I think we’d be in the top five.

Our tight ends are doing great in the red zone with Mark Bruener and Owen Daniels both having two TD’s each.

DeMeco Ryans is number one in the league in linebacker tackles! He has an incredible 26 with 20 being solo.

The Bad:

We are 23rd overall in total offense.

We are 25th overall in total rushing.

We are 23rd overall in total passing.

We are 19th overall in turnovers with a -1 total record.

We are 29th overall in punt returns and kick returns.

We are 19th overall in scoring offense (total points).

The Ugly:

We are dead last in defense in total yards giving up 483.7 per game! We are also dead last in giving up 3rd down conversions with 68.4% and committed the most penalty yards with 237. We also have caused the fewest fumbles and have only one interception.

We have given up 975 (last place) yards in the air and 489 (30th) yards on the ground. We have given up 12 TD’s and 32.7 points per game, which is also dead last.

So what does this mean? If our defense was even average I think that we could have gone 8-8 this year or conceivably 9-7. As it is right now, we will be fortunate to win more than three games. Our defense is so terrible that we gave up almost as many yards against the Redskins that the Rice Owls gave up against UT. We gave up 495 yards last game the Owls gave up 500. Pathetic.
 
The Texans have been dead last in defense before. But not that bad in total yards.

Great post and use of stats. here's an even more interesting one for you:

Time of Possession:
Texans - 24:35
Opponents - 35:25

Our defense is just bad enough that they are giving up long 80+ yard drives frequently, but just good enough that they aren't giving up the huge plays that take up no time. The result? Our offense gets the ball on average for over 10 minutes less than the other team. Thats pathetic.

PS: I have us at 29th in total offense, with 267.0 yards per game. Not sure where the 23 is coming form (unless you are counting total yards, which isn't fair b/c of bye weeks)

I am trying to see how you draw this conclusion. By the numbers you give besides Carr passing to Andre Johnson the offense would still be no better than average in any category.

Just a note, last year the Cardinals where in the top 10 in both offense and defense by the numbers but finished no where near the playoffs.
 
So David has the highest passer rating,it doesnt matter because he never throws the ball away when he's about to get sacked, AJ has 317 recieving yards, ok I cant argue with that, Demeco has 26 whoping tackles, thats all awesome but the defense is dead last in league

I guess this just goes to show stats are overrated and football is a team game
 
Carr seems to be able to pass pretty effectively. Shouldn't we try to run our offense more like Indy, pass then run. Have more quick slants.

But you can use stats for to show what you want. For instance, the stats you listed show that 3 of our 22 starters are (statistically) playing well. That is just over 13.6% of our starters, so the stats show we should be very, very bad.

The stats show that stats are accurate.

Have you even watched a game this year? I don't remember anytime he has taken a sack this year rather than throw it away or even run out of bounds short of the LOS. He has been doing a much better job of that. Has he gotten sacked, yes, but not where he could have gotten rid of the ball.

It would be nice to see the offensive stats by quarter. There's been way too much "garbage time" to take much from them as a whole.

If we were average in both catagories then 8-8 a posibility since it is 50% wins and losses. An average team should go 8-8. I said 9-7 to be optimistic if a few things went our way.

Since our time of possession is so bad because the defense can't get off the field, our offensive production is limited--especially the run. 8-8 would be a fantastic year for the Texans because we would improve by six wins. If we had an average NFL defense it wasn't out of the question.

Don't let folks tell you it is all garbage time.

1st quarter 13 completions on 14 attempts for 92.9% comp. 162 yds, 11.57 ypa 2 TD's, no INT's and a 154.5 QB rating with 3 completions over 20 yds and 3 sacks.

1st half 28 completions on 39 attempts for 71.8% comp. 336 yds, 8.62 ypa, 2 TD's no INT's and a 114.9 QB rating with 5 completions over 20 yds and 5 sacks.

The 3rd quarter has been the problem. He needs to come out and make something happen to open up the 2nd half and it hasn't happened.
 
Very nice to see the positives, on David Carr, Andre Johnson and Demeco Ryans who deserves defensive rookie of the year if he keeps this up.....he is truely a hidden gem in the draft this year.........

Thanks. But that leads to the question WTF!?!? Are we that badly outcoached by half-time adjustments? Are Kubiak's 1/2 time speeches that bad?

Since I don't see the games, its hard to talk intelligently about it, but it does make me wonder about our coaches' game preparation abilities vs. game time decision / adjustment making skills. Maybe its something Kubiak needs to develop with more experience.

I don't know what he says at half time, but that question was asked to him yesterday on 610 and he said, "what goes on between him and his players stays with him and his players and they know what was said". Something along those lines anyways, but I took it like he reamed them a knew hole and it apparently didn't light the fire anyways. We have a few slackers that need to be weeded out before the negativity spreads through this team like a cancer. IMHO :cowboy1:
 
Just to expand upon one of those stats - the Texans are 32nd in Yards Per Game allowed, at 483.7. Green Bay is 31st in the same category, giving up 388.3 yards per game.

OK, sorry ... here's another. First downs yielded per game progresses from 1st place at 11.5 by SD to 24.0 by the Jets. The progression goes in increments of 0.3 to 0.7 from one position to the next. It jumps from 24.0 to 27.0 from 31 to 32 ... the Texans.

Unlike last year, however, when we allowed a ton of passing TDs to relatively few rushing TDs, the team is pretty balanced this year. They've allowed 5 rushing TDs and 7 passing TDs. The top six teams have also allowed 12 TDs (combined).

And ... oh, never mind. :brickwall :deadhorse
 
I don't care if there is nobody out there at this point in time to take over for Richard Smith. Having nobody as defensive coordinator couldn't be much worse than this....

Thee are two part to limiting the defense's time on the field. One is for the defense to get off the field, but the other is for the offense to stay on the field with its own long drives.

Anyway, there is not the direct correlation between NFL stats and records. I appreciate that your are trying to find positives, and spread some hope to us, but it is not just clean as average offense+ average defense = average record. This is primary due the team ranking being based on yards only, but passer rating having about a dozen factors. Not strange to you that the 23rd ranked passing team can have the highest rated passer in the league. Even ifyou can justify the contradiction, it does not remove that there is a contradiction in the methods of measurement for that type of variance to exist.

You will find all sorts of things when pull team measurement stats. Teams that are very good on defense and average on offense (Steelers last year) , teams who are good in categories, but does not translate to wins (Cardinals last year), teams great on offense poor on defense with good records (Bengals). I could map other stuff which looks very goofy. The Texans actually were very unique last year in that they were really bad in both and that played itself out statistically.

well a team with an average offense and average defense would be expected to finish somewhere in the 8-8 range wouldnt they?

So far when they have tried to pass for a 1st down they are 6 of 12 for 5 1st downs, 1 TD and 4 sacks. Overall they are dead mid pack in the league with 37% of 3rd downs made. Once again where they TRULY suck in historic proportion is on defense (geez we really need a new term for that--maybe trip and fall hazard or something) where they give up 68.4% of 3rd downs. Right now we have a 2 quarter QB and a 2 down D--unfortunately everyone else is playing 4 downs for 4 quarters.

Answered in detail in a later post, but there is not a clear correlation between stats and win/loss record in the NFL.

Seriously it seems like every running play I see CC Brown dive at the feet of the running back in which the running back does not juke or even move side to side, he simply highsteps over him and continues his run to the endzone. Even in coverage, but most of the time he is not even around to attempt the tackle.
