Free Agency Impact

These mock drafts are really a lot of fun. Everyone has some interesting thought/opinions. Free agency starts March 3rd. Will impact us a great deal prior to the draft?

If they go 4-3, and it appears they will, I suspect Gary Walker will be a cap casualty. Babin would just crushed in the run game I think. Peek is athletic enough to maybe play end. There are basically no true DE's on this current roster.

I think Defense should be a high priority in the 2nd/3rd rounds, pending FA acquisition.

What do you folks see as potential FA pick ups for the Texans?

G Steve Hutchinson

LB Julian Peterson

DE John Abraham

CB Nate Clements

heres a short list of guys that are fa's that would really help and would fill some major holes, but alot of these guys will want good money. it would be nice just to get one of them

Add C/G LeCharles Bentley. That would be a nice list but as you said they will want some money and we won't be able to get more than one of these guys, if we can even get any of them here.

There is nothing wrong with picking up just one proven, impact free agent (and the associated contract). Fixing a hole with a proven perfromer is a good thing. Much less risk than drafting someone and projecting they'll be players in the league. For instance, I don't think planning on a 2nd round lineman to come in and "fix" the o-line next season is very realistic. Rookie impact on the defensive side might be a different story though.

The main problem with the Texans and free agency is going to be the high amount of money already tied up to long term deals. It might be best for them to take a huge cap hit this season and release guys like Walker, McKinney, Wade, and Payne. Next season could be a cap free year and although there may be some restrictions about who can get signed it will allow them to begin to be competitive. They could still sign a LeCharles Bentley and maybe even work a trade with the Jets to get Abraham. With the draft choices they bring in and a few cheaper free agents they will be improved and in better position next year.

The problem with gettin the people wont be money, its the fact they havent proven they are able to win. Money is part of it, but who wants to go to a place where the ring is out of the question?

There are always players that will go to the highest bidder. Unfortunately, those aren't the players the Texans want. Too bad we can't just change their positions and sign them on the cheap.

Dont be worried about the cap room. Either its gonna be about 20 million more next year, with a new collective bargaining agreement, or no cap at all if there isnt one signed by the beginning of march. The problem with FA's is the fact the texans havent proved they can win. Money is one factor but the ring is a bigger factor (unless ur TO).
