Four More Prospects Tested Positive for marijuana

NEW YORK (AP) - Four players projected to be taken in the middle to low rounds of next week's NFL draft have tested positive for marijuana, a source said.

The four include two from Wisconsin: defensive tackle Anttaj Hawthorne and guard Jonathan Clinkscale; defensive tackle Eric Coleman of Clemson and safety Atcheson Conway of Bowie, according to a source within the league who spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity.

The tests were administered at the NFL scouting combine, as was the one in which Northwestern defensive tackle Luis Castillo tested positive for androstenedione, which is considered a steroid by the NFL. Castillo, whose draft status was rising quickly before the positive test became public, is considered a potential first- or second-round pick.

Hawthorne is considered the best prospect of the other four, although his stock had been slipping. He could go in the fourth round or lower after being projected as a second-round pick early.

The NFL, which does not disclose information on drug tests, had no comment.

A player who tests positive for street drugs such as marijuana goes into the first stage of the NFL's drug program. That makes him subject to random testing up to 10 times a month for two years and subject to a fine or suspension if he tests positive again.

A player who tests positive for steroids before he comes into the league is subject to "reasonable cause" testing for steroids up to 24 times a year for his entire career. A player already in the league who tests positive for steroids is subject to suspension as a first-time offender.

Welcome the Ricky Williams' of 2005! Seriously though are these guys insane? They are taking a chance on ruining their lives and throwing away their careers just so they can get high? I would do anything to play in the NFL, I guess these guys think it is no big deal.
 
You have to remember that these are simply college kids , I know when I went to college I did more drinking and smoking than I did hitting the books or the weight room :wacko: ... thats just part of the college experience . These people just didnt have sense enough not to do this before the combine and drug tests . The misfortune of these players being caught now will be the fortune of those teams that draft them much later in the draft than was originally expected .

The difference between you(I know nothing about you, but I'm going to make this assumption anyway :) ) and these guys though is that they SHOULD know they are staring down millions of dollars and careers that make them idols to thousands if not millions of people. Doing something that is not only illegal in your profession, but also federally illegal is just dumb.

And doing it before a scheduled, public drug test is about the dumbest idea in the book.
 
thank god it wasnt Cedric Benson.. that would just soldifiy the "Ricky Williams 2.0" arguement.

That sucks about Hawthorne though.. I was hoping he would be drafted by us.
 
the problem with argument it that they aren't college kids anymore, would you light up before a job interview, probably not. these guys are just *****s, why would you smoke before a drug test you know you are going to have. maybe it is a shantee spencer thing, where their urine was just deluted and the test came back positive(i don't remember if he test positive for pot or performace enhancers, so it might be a different case)
 
Well alot of players have egos.. maybe they think they are good enough that the coaches will just look past their bad habits because they cant live without them? Maybe they all want to be Raiders, Ravens, or Cowboys?

As a former pothead though.. I can honestly say that weed is not some "harmless" drug as people make it out to be. Extended use robs you of your ambition and motivation.. and those are two things that are very important to having successful NFL career.
 
I guess Castillo is really going to drop like a rock because everyone will wonder what kind of performer he will be when he isn't on steroids.

I was really hoping to get either Hawthorne or Castillo to play nose tackle behind Payne. I wonder who Casserly will target now.......

I disagree that it's just part of the college experience. I dare say the majority doesn't imbibe to extreme on a regular basis, nor do they ingest illegal drugs. Just because it was part of the crowd you hung around with doesn't make it the norm. I can tell you from first hand experience that there are many, many, college kids that are there to get a college education, and further their careers and lives. These particular kids, knowing that they are major NFL prospects, going around smoking dope when they know that they are going to be tested, shows an almost unbeilavable lack of maturity and wisdom. Personally, I don't know that I want any of them....but IF Casserly and crew are 100% convinced they have learned their lesson, and they present good value in the draft, I am OK with it. Everyone is entitled to a "I learned my lesson" life event. Trying to seperate that from the habitual screwup is the problem. They really need to vet these kids and hope this is a one time immaturity incident. In general, I would steer clear myself.
 
Testing positive doesn't necessarily mean these guys were out getting high right before the combine. Grass stays in your system for 3-5 weeks. They probably had a bad agent or no agent at all to not tell them to quit beforehand. That could have been the only difference between some of these guys and someone like Benson. I think marijuana is fairly prevelent in sports these days, although more so in basketball than football.

Getting one of these guys on the second day and stipulating in his contract issues with drug use combined with the drug testing that will be done by the NFL, a team could get a good deal. But I doubt the Texans would choose to do this, McNair likes character guys.
 
So far the Texans's system of drafting good character players has worked. If it ain't broke don't mess with it.

Agreed. Also we're pretty quick to convict the guy. He could of been at a party or a car catching second hand smoke. Still would like to see the guy on the roster. Sapp made a pretty good turn around.
 
may be a little off topic but one of my friends smoked with eddie george down in south padre..was just a little suprising...didnt really seem like that kinda player to smoke weed...

not to say that his roids use was warrented, but the reports say that he only used them this off season to recover from an injury. does this mean that this was the only time he used them, i don't know, but that is all the information that we have. if he did it once whos to say he hasn't done it before.

as for the eddie george thing, it doesn't suprise me at all. i'm sure their are a lot of guys in the nfl and even the texans that smoke and we wouldn't think they would do it.
 
They said Warren Sapp tested positive for the same and it caused him to drop in the first round.

Would you have still passed on Sapp if you had an idea of what kind of player he'd turn into?
