Former Miami Dolphins FB Rob Konrad describes 'boater's nightmare'
Former Miami Dolphins fullback Rob Konrad thanked everyone who helped him after surviving "a boater's nightmare."

Konrad spoke to the media Monday for the first time since Wednesday night's ordeal.

The former second-round draft pick said he was nine miles out in the Atlantic Ocean when a wave knocked him off his boat, which was on autopilot and headed in the direction of the Bahamas.

Konrad said he didn't have a flotation device and there were no boats in sight, so he started to swim back to shore. Konrad said he worried about catching hypothermia, but after about five hours in the water, he started to believe he could make it back to shore.

Along the way, Konrad was bitten by jellyfish and was circled by a shark as he got closer to shore, he said.

Konrad finally made it to Palm Beach after 16 hours in the water and swimming 27 nautical miles.

He was taken to Good Samaritan Medical Center, where he was treated.

News conference is over. Konrad had to stop several times to compose himself. Still shaken, as anybody would be.

Daughters, 8 and 10, got nervous: "Where's Daddy?"

Tammy: "He had two angels on his back."

Tammy: "Rob is very, very powerful human being. He sets his mind on something and he does go after it."

Tammy: "One thing that I knew is my husband is an incredible family guy. Our children are his world.”

Wife Tammy: "It was a miracle he made it home."

“Kind bittersweet, I hit the shore, the problem was I couldn’t walk

Voice really breaks, "I have two beautiful daughters...I WAS hitting the shore."

"After some time i just said look, I’m not dying tonight and I’m going to make it to shore."

"I prayed to God to send a boat."

Got bit by whole bunch stuff, jellyfish. Circled by shark as sun went down. "There was a lot of stuff glowing at night."

"I shouldn't be here. Sixteen hours in water, think ended up traveling 27 miles."

Saw what looked like fishing boat 50 yds away, tried flag down, failed. Then saw Coast Guard helicopter, right over top of him. Didn't see him.

Konrad fearing hypothermia, pauses during talk to compose self.

Boat was on autopilot, heading east toward Bahamas. No hope of getting back to it. Immediately decided to swim toward shore.

"I realized I was in real trouble." no life vest, no time to radio in SOS

Trouble hit when "unusually large wave hit" the boat.

Konrad: "A boater's nightmare and was lucky enough to survive."

Konrad: "Happy to be here." Thanks Coast Guard, police in PB, medics, doctors at Good Sam.

We're told Rob Konrad is not 100 percent, so we're uncertain how long news conference will last.

Rob Konrad will be doing a news conference in about 15 minutes. He was just released from the hospital yesterday.

This story is getting better with retelling. From last week:

PALM BEACH, Fla. - Former Miami Dolphins fullback Rob Konrad survived a fall into the ocean off Palm Beach by swimming nine miles back to shore.

The U.S. Coast Guard told Local 10 News that Konrad was fishing alone Wednesday evening when he fell off his 36-foot boat.

Konrad, who played with the team from 1999-2004, remained in the Atlantic Ocean for 10 to 12 hours as he swam about nine miles back to safety, making it to shore about 4:40 a.m.

Wow that's crazy.

I'd be so dead.

is nautical miles different than regular miles because I read he swam 9 miles o shore...

A nautical mile is 1.15 miles. Either someone just misreported the bigger number or he was 9 miles from shore but in the course of covering that distance a current drifted him to a total of 27 miles.

What Do We Know About Rob Konrad's 16 Hours At Sea?

What kind of conditions was he swimming in? The National Weather Service in Miami-Dade told me that the water temperature the night of Jan. 7 was 75 degrees, although air temperatures dropped down to about 60 degrees that night. (According to one set of hypothermia guidelines, exhaustion or unconsciousness could set in after anywhere from two to 12 hours at that temperature.) Starting at 10 p.m., a small craft advisory was in effect because of hazardous conditions with waves reaching up to eight feet at night, meteorologist Chuck Caracozza said. They had north winds moving about 20 to 25 knots. Closer to shore, there was a high risk of rip currents.

The story is he was 9 miles off shore and the current carried him north as he swam west coming ashore ~25 miles from where he fell in.

His story is supported by an assistant who dropped him off at entry point and drove his car to expected landing point and left it for him to retrieve. Other than that, he was alone so it's just his word. There are easier ways to get in the news.

Doesn't matter. My parents just swam a few hundred yards to reach this country. I'm so ashamed of them now.

That's sarcasm people

It was more like a few hundred feet

The ratio Cak gave is accurate. The difference is the length of the mile. On shore, the statute mile (regular mile) is 5,280 feet and in the ocean , (the nautical Mile) is 6,000 feet which rounds to the 1.15:1 ratio for converting knots to MPH. The term Knots is simply the speed in nautical miles per hour.
