Fisher Fired!

I'm confused since he recently received a contract extension. IMO, it's about 20 years late in coming, but I am surprised the Rams decided they needed to move on.

Apparently the extension never kicked in. I think it might have had a "hold" on it until this season's results were made apparent. Obviously, I'm not sure myself. Personally, I wonder why the extension had to be leaked to be public knowledge. It was inked before the 1st preseason game.

Not sure there was a more overrated coach during his entire stint in the NFL...still has good enough "name" where he might get another gig

The extension was signed in the off-season. It just didn't become big news until the Rams started their losing streak. I believe that the GM came out and said that he tried to keep it private because he knew that the fans would be unhappy, but that he agreed to the extension because he didn't want the team to be moving to LA with a lame duck head coach. I have no idea why that matters. New city or not, everyone knew that their coaching situation was abysmal.

Apparently, the extension also had a provision in it where the Rams could still fire Fisher this year with no penalty because it didn't actually kick in until the start of next season.

Just a messy situation over there.

Fisher has got to be one of the most overrated coaches in the league.

He's really good at smooth talking the owner and telling him what he wants to hear, and pretty good with the media. He also has a knack for assembling a defensive staff

That's all I got

I think he got a lot of credit for the Titans making it to the Super Bowl in just the third year after the relocation (and all the upheaval that supposedly weht with that), and he rode that momentum for a long, long time.

Jeff Fisher, surely there's room for another good man on our coaching staff? Although at this point why would he want a demotion? I'd like to have him as a defensive backs coach. But he hasn't assumed that role since 1993.

Geez, you want everyone that ever did anything.

Our current secondary coach has been doing an awesome job

Awesome job? You must not be seeing a lot of poor techniques being displayed out there. Something as simple as turning your head on a fade route. Too many pass interference calls. To be fair, Nelson really struggled in that last game. A guy that shouldn't have been out there. Clowney and our pass rush really saved us.

I just re-watched the tape this morning. We're very fortunate to have gotten out of Indy with a 22-17 win. Luck was turnover prone and threw some lame ducks. Our pass rush was excellent. The Clowney forced srtip fumble in the red zone saved the game. If the Colts had scored a Touchdown on that drive we'd have lost.

First, I'm not certain that any position on any NFL team staff is a demotion from unemployed, but I get your point in that regard. I'm guessing that if they mutually wanted to (and I doubt either side does), they could come up with some sort of consultant title (or maybe Assistant HC) or something to get everyone okay with the structure (but it sure as heck wouldn't be a position coach).

That said I think of the four of us involved in this post (You, me, Jeff Fisher and the Texans), you're the only one who even remotely wants what you've just described to happen.

Unless Jeff Fisher is absolutely set on staying in coaching (and without really being able to say why, my guess is he's not), he'll either end up with some position in the NFL offices where he can continue to be a part of the competition committee, and show up on NFL network with regularity - perhaps (in part) filling the role Mike Pereira filled, and has been vacant since he left in spite of their weekly segment with Dean Blandino. Less likely (IMO) is a network television role ala Steve Mariucci, Tony Dungy, or Brian Billick. I just think he's so closely alligned with the NFL HQ right now that's gonna be where he ends up.

Finally, the Texans currently have the 5th highest rated passing D in the NFL, so the fact that some nobody who's been on the active roster for about an hour and a half got torched as part of a short-handed secondary doesn't really say much about the DB coach.

Bah, Nelson is a practice squad player that called up due to injuries. Our pass defense is highly ranked and it ain't only because of the pressure we been putting on qb's. Our db's for the most part have been doing a very good job. Lot's of teams would love to have the job they've been doing

I'm just worried when we play the Patriots in the divisional round at Foxborough, our secondary will be torched and give up about 350 passing yards and 4 or 5 passing TD's to Tom Brady and without Gronk too. In a game we lose 42-13.

That's assuming we win the AFC South and our home wild-card game against the Raiders. I'm confident we can shut down Derek Carr at home. That may not be an easy task given the sensational fourth quarter he had against us in Mexico City. After we had shut him down for three quarters.

I don't feel comfortable with this secondary for some reason. Even though the stats look excellent and would lead you to believe they're an elite unit.

Hey, do you think the Texans would.....

:kitten:
You don't have to worry, Fisher demands full and complete control over all football operations. The masterful wizard behind the green curtain says NFW you can't have my football team.

I'm actually a bit saddened that Fisher didn't break the record. If anyone's spent more time in the league earning such a dubious honor, it's certainly Fisher. Hopefully he'll get one more season as a head coach.
I wonder if Jeff Fisher is a potential hire for the Jacksonville Jaguars. Didn't they fire Gus Bradley less than an hour after the game today? Jeff Fisher would be back in the AFC South and playing the Houston Texans twice a year.

I believe that Fisher is done as a HC in the NFL. That's just my opinion and I'm wrong as much as I'm right but I just think that owners at this point know exactly what they're getting with him and that isn't even regular winning records anymore.

He's been an NFL head coach for so long it's hard to evaluate him as anything else, in terms of what value he may have as a defensive coordinator or even a position coach (defensive backs coach). Jobs and roles he hasn't done in over two decades.

Another landing spot for Jeff Fisher could be Buffalo. They are likely to fire Rex Ryan after the season. They will clean house and have a vacancy at head coach and defensive coordinator.

But I think the Jaguars, a talented young team with a shutdown secondary and pretty good defense already in place, would be a better fit for Fisher to coach compared to the Bills. The Jaguars also have a young franchise quarterback if you believe Blake Bortles is as good as he looked last year, and this year was just a down year for him. While the Bills haven't had a franchise quarterback since Jim Kelly retired.

Mike Smith Atlanta's old HC is rumored to be the front runner for the Jags job.

I think if there's an opening in San Francisco he might join that cesspool of a franchise (a jab at their ownership).

I heard an interview Fisher did after the firing and it seemed like he was containing some serious bitterness for the Rams. At the very end of the interview he was asked about his future with the NFL, if any. He said he "wants the chance to beat the Rams."

NFC West or not, I don't think he's done if offered a HC job based on that interview.

Maybe, but that wouldn't help Bortles and I think that's the way they will go. They'll bring in someone to try to salvage Bortles not their pretty good defense

O'Brien is a supposed QB guru, let's send his ass to Jacksonville and maybe get a head coach here. :D

Jags GM: Next coach won't have to play Blake Bortles
Whoever becomes the next coach of the Jacksonville Jaguars won't be tied at the hip to Blake Bortles.

Anointed to find a successor for Gus Bradley -- who was fired on Sunday -- retained general manager Dave Caldwell made it clear that he remains open to a fresh opinion on Bortles, the struggling quarterback who Caldwell hand-selected with the No. 3 overall pick in 2014.
