Firing the coach question

Buffi2

Veteran
From ESPN -
The Lions are in discussions that could lead to the firing of head coach Steve Mariucci possibly as early as Friday, according to reports in the Detroit Free Press and on WJBK-TV in Detroit.

 My question is, if Detroit can fire Mariucci today, why can't we fire Capers yesterday? Goodness knows we've been humiliated on national TV......twice!:embarrass

Hah, Detriot has been humiliated on TV the past 2 Thanksgivings. And I believe Harrington has been benched the past 2 thanksgiving.

I wonder how many people will want mariucci to be the head coach here. I hope our front office doesn't try to save money and go that route with Mariucci.

Mooch is the same caliber of coach as Capers.

Likeable guys who look good on the sideline, but haven't done much in terms of forward progress (minus the 49er days with Steve Young at the controls).

The bigger question is this: How much does a HC really figure into the equation of winning?

Phil Jackson of the Lakers, who was supposed to the supreme NBA coach, a god among mere mortals, doesn't look to swell right now does he?

There's a lot to be said about the Shanahans and the Phil Jacksons of this world: The coaches who were blessed with game-changing hall-of-famers on their team who could single-handedly take games onto their shoulders and win it all by themselves.

Gruden was a god, or is he? Hasn't done too well since that SB win a few years ago. And what about Brian Billick? Won a SB and now he's all but finished in Baltimore?

Very puzzling.

What I am saying now is that he's our starting RB. We should not put our starting RB in a position that he could seriously be hurt. I mean that's just my opinion.
Steve Smith is more valuable than Dom Davis is....tell it to Carolina too.

I don't think that's a good idea either. I say let Mathis do it, because we know he can brake a play at any point.

Yep, and DD is somewhat injury prone to begin with.

so is Mathis, so if its injury we are worried about I am more worried about Mathis. Heck just put someone back there that can fair catch the thing. It isn't like most punts actually get alot of return yardage anyway.

Capers deserved to fired already. However firing him is one thing. Putting someone else in to be the Head Coach is the real question, who would that be.

I was thinking of this the other day and I had to wonder if Chris Palmer, the only other coach with Head Coaching ability wasn't fired by Capers as insurance that Capers himself wasn't fired midseason. Naaa, that couldn't have been it. I mean everyone on this board wanted Palmer fired so our offense could explode and we would for sure start winning right after that, right. hmmmm.

I am beginning to wonder if McNair has already got our new coach in the bag. Why else would you keep Capers and Co. around? He knows that he will have to move fast once the season is over but since it would not be possible for a new coach to start until next year why fire Capers now. I really am starting to think that it is going to be Jimmy.

You know what is really funny? Some act as if Capers and co. being fired at the end of the season is a definite thing, what if it doesn't happen? Either McNair has at least an idea of who will replace Capers if he is canned or Capers will be here one more season.

That is an intriguing thought and it would make sense given the facts available, but how in the heck would they be able to keep that quiet? I also wonder how JJ could possibly keep his job at Fox and be a secret employee of the Texans. I'm actually okay with JJ. I think there are better candidates out there, but there are also far worse. I also know that JJ means no Casserly because he wouldn't leave the booth unless he had total control.

Capers is gone, you can read it all over McNairs face on Sundays. Body language doesn't lie

WHY IN THE HE!! CAN HE ONLY RETURN KICK-OFFS AND NOT PUNTS, AS WELL?

I mean, the guy is our only threat and we only use him on 1/2 of the special teams opportunities?

And then Capers is thinking of DD at punt returner?

Sorry everybody...I'm not a coach at ANY level, but that's just about the most ignorant thing Capers could do, let alone "think" or "consider."

Good grief. (pounding the keyboard)

How is this guy even allowed through security at the front gates of Reliant? I mean, at some point doesn't there need to be an intervention from friends and family?

And to think that McNair just sits there like a stone statue in the luxury box with his arms folded and mouth puckered up in disdain....as if he's totally unable to do anything because GASP! it's mid-season?!

Start up the clown car. Order the bucket with paper confetti in it. Call up Luchio and Garpazzi and all their clown friends! We've got a full blown circus act going on here, and we need all hands on deck.

I would like to state for the record that I did not want Chris Palmer fired and believed prior to that happening that he should have been the guy to take the reins mid-season when Dom went out the door.

I just wanted to see what Palmer would have done with this offense if he'd been able to run it the way he wanted to.

I think you are reaching more than a bit but just to play around with this (strictly for fun) I think that if your scenario was correct then another reason to keep it quiet and not make a change in the middle of the season might be to keep the "stink" of this year off of Jimmy Johnson. Why would he want to step in mid-season when he can't really change anything? This year is already in motion and nothing is going to change the way it plays out. JJ would want to start fresh with a full off-season to look at the film and evaluate the players. Bringing him here mid-season and watching him helm the losers we have right now would hurt the "putting people in the seats" effect of hiring someone like JJ. It's better to wait until after the season is over.
That's of course all fiction and I don't think anybody has been hired (or really fired) yet. It's fun to imagine though. I really want to see Johnson come here and coach.

Capers has lost the team. I'm really not looking for back to back seasons like this one.

I'd really like to see JJ come here, but I also really think it's wishfull thinking and that that's the last thing on his mind. We're getting caught up emotionally in this hope that the almost impossible will happen. JJ probably wants to be remembered for what he did with Dallas and not for trying to recuperate this mess in Houston.

Hervoyel,

That was my response to the suggestion. I didn't actually make the suggestion (so I'm not taking credit). My question was not a question of WHY they would wait to make an announcement but HOW they could possibly keep it quiet with the way the press is nowadays. You would think some rumor mill somewhere would be pouncing all over that.

If memory serves, the Dolphins hired Nick Saban with two games left to go last season, but he did not coach in the final two games because his LSU team was in a bowl game and he wanted to watch from afar. So, if McNair has indeed made that decision (I also agree it is far-fetched) it makes a lot of sense for JJ (or whoever else it could be) to watch from afar so he could make more decisions.

I think the more likely scenario has McNair already with a short list of who he would like to take over at either slot (GM and coach). What I find interesting is that Ron Wolf (formerly of the Packers when they went to two Superbowls) wants to get back into player personnel.

Not to mention Jerry Rice, TO, and some good running backs to go with that monster team the 49ers had!

Double D is the number 2 all time SEC kick returner (in yardage), punts and KO's. No doubt that he could do the job, but could he take the pounding of returning kick and running the ball on offense?

As we can see the offense isn't any better really. I haven't checked but I'd bet we are still the only team in the league that has yet to score 21 points in any given game. Our offense churns out 1 TD a game for the most part.

Baltimore too.

Bob Porter: Uh...sir? Is your mouth OK? It seems to be stuck open?

lol:

My wife and I were discussing that. He reminds us of most of the people that go on Judge Judy. I honestly believe when your mouth is open like that you lose 20-40 IQ points.

Seriously though, that was a good bit. Hopefully, McNair is just holding on to make a clean break after Jan 2.

I was watching "Office Space" yesterday, and I got to thinking, what if "The Bobs" came and had to clean house. I could see it going this way:

DISCLAIMER: This is only a joke...don't take it seriously...it's just a dumb joke.

Capers:

Bob Slydell: OK...Mr. Capers, what exactly do you do here?
Bob Porter: Uh...sir? Is your mouth OK? It seems to be stuck open?
Capers: (pushes mouth shut) Sorry. That happens when I get confused.
Slydell: Now sir, what exactly do you do here in the Houston Texans organization?
Capers: Well...I am the coach. I make the players play better.
Porter: Sir, you are sporting a 1-9 record, your players don't seem to respond to you. Sir, what are you writing in your notebook?
Capers: Nothing.
Slydell: (rips notebook out of Capers hands and reads aloud) I am a good coach. I am a good coach.
Capers: Look, I am a coach! I coach players! I am a people person!
Porter: (writes in his log next to Capers - useless)

Don't worry boys and girls...I'll come up with more in a little bit.

Yep, subtracting Chris Palmer improved us not one single bit. It's unfortunate but we'll never know what would have happened if we had subtracted Dom and given Chris the chance to call it any way he wanted to.

Speculating I would say that it's very possible we would still be 1-9. Even if Palmer was able to do it his way and even if that improved our offensive production we still weren't going to be anything special. Say for instance that our output doubled we still weren't going to get by many opponents scoring 14 points per game and that hypothetical improvement doesn't do anything to help the defense which is a whole list of problems all by itself.
