Expansion Teams

The NFL wants to move a team to LA by 2008 and the team thats most likely to go is the Saints, but what if you could add 8 teams to the NFL what city would it be and what would b their mascot?
 
I don't know about 8, but if I could give 1 city an NFL team it would be San Antonio. This has even been discussed before. They are defintely deserving and big enough to support a professional football team. The way I look at it, if florida and cali can have 3 football teams then the football mecca of the world should have 3 teams to. Although I think theres no way in hell J. Jones would ever allow that to happen. He considers that Cowboy country.

Lets see :hmmm: names, I don't know I'm sure it'll probally have something to do with the alamo or something
 
Now.. this is a question ive stewed over quite a bit. Personally id love to have 8 new teams just cause its fun :).. but considering the impact that could have on the NFL as a whole.. probably not a good idea. There just isnt enough talent to go around.. and it would mean less profit for all the other teams.

Anyway.. i dont have team names and mascots .. but ill throw something out there where I can.

San Antionio Banditos Mascot: Rodrigo the Bandito Colors: Bronze and Gold

L. A. Archangels Mascot: ?an angel? Colors: White and Pink

Columbus(OH) Pioneers Mascot: Columbus(duh) Colors: Sky Blue and Gold

Las Vegas Enforcers Mascot: ?a wise guy? Colors: Black and White

Milwaukee Brawlers ?

Louisville Sluggers?

Portland ?

Boise?
 
LA Plastic - The mascot is representative of the culture at large. It fits on so many levels.

San Antonio Texans - They have two CFL teams with the same mascots (actually spelled differently though) so why not allow it in the NFL? If that doesn't fly, lets try the Cervezas (beers). It would be a marketing bonanza.

Portland Hooters - An Owl would be their mascot but they would have an automatic sponser. Their new stadium would be Hooters Stadium. Wouldn't you like to see their cheerleader's outfits?

Toronto Canadians - They have to keep reminding us they are not Americans. This is probably the only city that could sustain NFL football in Canada.

Memphis Elvises - Is there any mascot that is scarier than an army of Elvis impersonators?

New York Trumps - The city can actually sustain a 3rd team. Donald Trump has always wanted an NFL team. The city of New York actually needs a team that plays in the city instead of in Jersey.

Las Vegas Gamblers - If there was ever a city that truly deserved that mascot, it was Las Vegas. How did the USFL ever come up with that mascot for Houston? That is as bad as the Utah (formerly New Orleans) Jazz.

I had a hard time coming up with a seventh location. Possibles would be:
Birmingham
Raleigh/Durham
Louisville
Vancover
Montreal
 
My suggestion is:

Portland Loggers (there's a fairly large timber industry in Oregon).

Sure they have Oilers in L.A. They're a vital part of the *cough* exotic *cough* dancing industry. They oil up the dancers before they hit the stage for artistic reasons.

They could go with Memphis Kings and still be in the neighborhood, plus it almost sounds plausible.

Why not just let him go ahead and restart his New Jersey Generals from the old USFL days. That would be kind of cool IMO.

1.Las Vegas BLack Jacks! (evil mean lookin jack)
2.L. A. Oscars (gold warrior similar to golden state warriors)
3.El Paso Stingers (scoripions
4.Utah(Salt Lake city)Ice (mountains)
5.Albuquerque-roadrunners
6Portland-Loggers(angry tree iono it would make the cards look super mean lol)
7.San antonio-Bandits
8.and last choice can go to 3 cities Austin, Sacramento, or Oklahoma City
 
Please, not a team in San Antonio. Unless it's NFC. I already lose out on most the Rockets and Astros games, if they took the Texans away as well (I'm in San Marcos at Texas State) I would lose it.

I bout fell out of my chair laughing at that one! What in the world makes you think San Antonio is deserving? Florida apparently can't support the three they have, since Jacs can't sell out their stadium. IMHO NO state should have three teams. If the NFL wants a team in LA so bad let them move one out of Calif, Flor, or NY (NJ) whatever! The Saints need to stay put!

The Jags need to move to LA and become the LA donkeys. After all, they would want to be politically correct! :heh:

no offense, but this isn't florida. Texas is obviously not your average state. Football is a religion here. Also this is not just my idea, thats why I put "this has been discussed before" in my previous post. This has been talked about before around the league. San antonio is a growing city and much more well suited for a nfl franchise than jacksonville. I'm not sure so don't jump on me if I'm wrong but I think San antonio passed dallas last year in terms of population. They have always supported the spurs and they deserve another pro sports franchise. You put a team there I guarantee that place will sell out. The problem is, like I said before Jerry will never allow that to happen.
 
and San Antonio is probably the best tourist attraction in Texas. A superbowl in San Antonio could rival the best superbowls in Miami, N.O., or San Diego.

This map is pre-Texans, but it shows where things stack up in this country.
The East Coast especially. ..where you have Patriots, Giants, Jets, Ravens, Redskins, Eagles all on top of each other! California has their 3 teams already. At issue is the NFL wanting that 4th one in LA. They will get it.
It's all about the interest, population and money and MEDIA. Looks like everything in the sports world gravitates toward the TV cameras...east and west coast.
 
And if they don't see Houston as a national media draw, they certainly won't recognize San Antonio. San Antonio has recently surpassed Dallas/Ft. Worth in population, second in the state. But like mentioned above, it is strong Cowboy country.
 
Judging by the way the media's trashing Jacksonville on an almost hourly basis (especially media from big cities or major networks) as being a small "minor-league" city with terrible infrastructure, I have to think they'd have a field day with San Antonio too. Difference is, San Antonio has a couple of things Jacksonville doesn't:

1) Hotels.
2) Nightlife.

San Antonio is a convention city and can handle big events, but it just seems weird to put one in a city were the NFL has no regular presence. They can pull off the NBA Finals and NCAA Final Four, but the Super Bowl's something altogether different.

No matter. San Antonio's not getting an NFL team, and neither is Jacksonville. :heh:
 
San Antonio is the largest small town in America. It has the hotels and entertainment, but it doesn't seem to have the corporate infrastructure of other highly populated cities.

San Antonio Please!!!!!! I'm desperate for a pro football team, the spurs don't fill the void...

Desperados, Bandits, or bring back the old USFL name "Gunslingers." Black and Gold... :howdy:
 
I just don't see San Antonio getting a pro football team. The stadium is not adequate and from all I've ever read the city movers and shakers are not willing to build a stadium the NFL would accept. Would be nice though.
 
8 new franchises is way too many...L.A. is big enough to support 2 teams but it never will because of the people there

franchises would be

L.A. Sharks
San Antonio Rattlers
Las Vegas Jackels(Gamblers is good but i think they would take offense to that)

and that would be about it...honestly though i think san antonio is a cowboy town so that franchise wouldn't work there...you might have to go to a small town that has just enough people to support a team and hope that they are loyal fan base like new mexico or utah
 
The only thing I heard the commish say was he wanted a team in LA by the end of the decade and he was dedicated to doing that; that he wants to see about playing some games in Mexico (I think it was Mexico) and he'd like to see about doing something in China for the preseason one year. That's ambitious. That flight takes hours and it would surely mess up a team's training camp schedule but I guess it'd be great publicity for any team. And I believe I read something about an all NFL network eventually being a possibility.
 
I'd love to see the NFL come into San Antonio. Better yet would be to take advantage of the Austin to San Antonio I-35 corridor to increase the size of the media market and fans from which to draw.

The South Texas Vaquero.

Build the stadium in New Braunfels/San Marcos area, so it's in between the two cities.

Y'all are right about Jerry Jones having a crapper if the NFL tried to get into SA. There have been times when Cowboys games get higher ratings in SA than they do in Dallas.

Didn't they have a team back in the AFL days called the Gunslingers? I heard that one didn't go too well. Besides San Antonio is a basketball town.

Portland seems like a big enough city, sure..but as anyone who has visited there and knows what it's like, I highly doubt an NFL Franchize could thrive there.

I would think L.A. would be a bad choice simply because the Rams and Raiders failed (cant remember why) in L.A. and were forced to move.

Vegas might be good, I thaught most of the traffic in Vegas were tourists so getting season ticket holders might be a problem.

Milwaukee?...I should think that's Packer territory.

Boise?...dont make me laugh! :heh:

Columbus and San Antonio seem like good football cities to me, maybe Ohio could actually get a winning football team for once?

But if I had to name some cities off the top of my head without lookup up city pop. & professional sports teams, I would say Toronto..I know its not in the U.S. but Toronto is a major North American city with something like I think 3 mil people, they already have thriving Pro Basketball,Baseball, and Hockey teams..and from what I hear the CFL has its share of fans up north.
 
The Rural Northwest - treehuggers (go with a region i.e. New england)

New Jersey - Muggers

Alaska - Eskimo "coldest outdoor stadium in the NFL"

Kentucky - Fiddlers (Not any worse than the Utah Jazz)

Charleston, WV - Hillbillies

Los Angeles - Smog

Oklahoma City - Oklahomans (dont know if thats a word)

Hawaii - Fightin Hulas

Apparently you don't know squat about San Antonio.

The Alamo City is primarily a football town. Just because it has a successful NBA franchise doesn't make it a "basketball town."

Football is discussed more than basketball on local sports radio. Callers talk about the Spurs but nothing else related to hoops. Yet, callers will talk about football (at all levels - high school, college, pro) day and night.

San Antonio residents love their Spurs, but give them an NFL franchise, and see how well they embrace them.
