ESPN just released a statement Friday about NFL Insider Chris Mortenson. Mortenson has been diagnosed with stage IV throat cancer.

Mortenson released this statement via ESPN, "More than a week ago, I was diagnosed with a Stage IV throat cancer," Mortensen said in a statement Friday. "My focus shifted significantly to gathering information about the specifics of this cancer. The initial diagnosis was confirmed Friday and there is another test remaining that will determine the best possible treatment plan that will commence in the very immediate future."

"Consequently, with the support and encouragement from ESPN president John Skipper and many others at ESPN, I am temporarily stepping away from my normal NFL coverage duties to better engage this opportunity to fight the good fight that is projected to affect almost 1.7 million Americans with new cases in 2016.

"I have many inspirational examples of men, women and children who have faced this very fight. We all know somebody, right? I also have the love and prayers of my wife Micki, my family, my friends, colleagues and, most of all, my faith that serve as sources of tremendous strength. I have a peace about this and look forward to the battle."

ESPN president John Skipper said, "Our thoughts are with Chris and his family as he faces this challenge," Skipper said. "He is an extremely respected colleague, who has the complete support of his entire ESPN family. We wish him strength and hope in the battle ahead and look forward to his return whenever he chooses."

My prayers and thoughts go out to Chris Mortenson and his family. Cancer, of any kind and any stage, is always a difficult fight but it really shows a person's true courage and fight.

I lost my grandfather to stage IV lung cancer the day after Christmas a few weeks ago. He lived an amazing life and was 85 years old. He was a hardcore Houston Astros fan just like me. I sort of take comfort in the fact he died in the same year as Milo Hamilton and Gene Elston. He enjoyed listening to both of them.

My mother overcame stage II ovarian cancer last year. She just finished all of her chemotherapy two months ago, and is just now starting to grow her hair back.

Cancer is difficult on family and friends. I myself, have felt like I had no control at times. All I can do was pray and stay strong. Had I lost my mother too I'd have been tremendously lost right now. As it is, I'm barely hanging on without my grandfather. He was the rock of our family for many years.

Good luck to Mortenson and his fight with stage IV throat cancer. I may not know him personally but I always enjoyed his NFL analysis on ESPN. He's a wonderful man from what I've seen on TV.

I ******* hate cancer.. I literally just got the news 10 minutes ago that my aunt is terminal with colon cancer and there's nothing that they can do for her.. They originally were optimistic that they could operate and save her life.. she just finished chemo a week ago and they were very optimistic.. apparently they ran some tests and found out the cancer spread to a lymph node next to a artery and told her it was non operable. She's having surgery in a week, but it's no longer to cure her..just improve her quality of life.

We need to find a cure for this disease..like Chris Mortenson said.."everybody knows someone right?" I look forward to the day when that's not the case.
