ESPN Radio Cowherd show: Jan. 2 Texans-Niners = Leinart Bowl

A reporter from Houston, some guy named "Charlie," was talking to Colin Cowherd on ESPN Radio at approximately 9:30 a.m. 10-11-05.

They were talking about the Astros, blah-blah-blah, and at the end when Colin was about to end the discussion and move onto another reporter...Charlie said, "...Houston Texans, Colin?"

And Colin replied, "Yeah, there's a reason why I didn't bring them up...."

And then Charlie says, "...January 2nd, Colin. It's Texans and Niners in the Leinart Bowl, but you know Niners are not going QB after getting Alex Smith this year...."

And the conversation trailed off and ended right after that.

Anyway, just interesting to see a reporter in Houston thinking that maybe the QB situation needs a change.

Gee, yeah that is one interpretation, or the one most pundits are going with which is plenty of people will want to trade with the #1 pick holder to get Leinert (actually insert top QB name here--since this gets done every year for a while now). This isn't an endorsement or defense of Carr, more of IMO you're letting your agenda color your interpretation of things and this is a more realistic interpretation of that comment.

I am worried that the other teams will finish up in such a way that none of the rest of the top (bottom?) ten teams will be hunting a QB or be willing to trade up for our pick. Then we're stuck at the top with a real need for a LT but we'll trade so far down that we'll miss out on the cream of the crop.

Regardless Casserly will tell us about the value we got trading down and how this "Brad Butler" guy from Virginia was really the player we had targeted all along. Great "value" pick and now I've got some more draft picks to trade for somebody elses malcontents!

QBs are like fine wine and take time to mature into something. But you have to have the other ingredients like AN OFFENSIVE LINE.

Troy Aikman wasn't a great QB. He was only good because the Cowboys had one of the best offensive lines of all time, if not the best. Barry Sanders would be the man if he had a line like they did.

We have a good QB and he showed it last year. THE O line is our weakness. I don't see why we should get another QB when he won't have a line to protect him.

No. It's more like a reporter from Houston mentioning Matt Leinart and the Houston Texans in the same breath. I have no agenda but seeing this team succeed....and it appears a reporter from Houston made a comment on national radio that he thinks Texans-Niners is the Matt Leinart Bowl, but that the Niners already picked a #1 QB this past draft. He went silent after that and I think you can draw your own conclusions form there on.

Why does a guy like Charlie, going away after talking Astros, blurt out "Texans," and when Cowherd gives him a chance...he mentions Leinart in the same breath? Wake up, bro. It's because he is more than likey trying to cast his own opinion about the failings of Carr. He could have singled out the o line, but he didn't. He could have singled out Capers but he didn't. He singled out Carr through the Leinart comment, and in my opinion he singled him out because he knows what a lot of us know: Carr is getting a big pass from most fans who are yelling "O line! O line!" all day long.

Look, what else do I have to do here?

1. Carr's comments after TB preseason game. Ridiculous.
2. Carr's comments before Titans game. Dumb.
3. Carr's comments AFTER Titans game. Backhanded slap to his WRs.
4. Boomer and Marino chuckling and saying Carr should do x, y, z.
5. A reporter from Houston mentioning Leinart and Texans in same sentence with virtually no interpretation needed as to what he meant by the comment.

You guys can stick with him if you want, and you can yell "O line! O line!" all day long. I see things differently, and I'm not changing.

Can he succeed? I doubt it. Yippee if he does, but I am not giving him the benefit of the doubt right now with his combination of performance and PRINTED comments. That's about as a dangerous combo for an NFL QB as you can get: Playing poorly, and then saying things to the press that cast you as the greatest thing since sliced bread. Jeesh........ COme back to reality, David! The water is fine.

Excuse me? He won all 3 Super Bowls he was in and he also either owns the record or is close to being the all-time most accurate post season passer. Troy was the cog of some great teams but the operative word is TEAM...they had a very good O line, excellent RB's and top receivers. Troy also had a very good TE in Novacek. They had the total package offensively. That doesn't demean what Troy did though....well to me it doesn't. I guess to you it does.

Why even bring up Barry Sanders...he didn't play for the Cowboys so nobody will ever know what he would have done with their O line. It's always funny to me when people pick out a player and say "well IF he had done this or played here he WOULD have done this or that"...who knows? Emmitt hit holes with authority, shifted to minimize contact and then blew through contact. His OL was made to look much better through his efforts. Same thing with Aikman being an incredibly smart QB. Just like Manning now, Aikman helped himself not get sacked by moving well, sensing pressure, getting the ball out to the WR's and Novacek and throwing the ball away. Bottom line it was a great team that made each other look better.

Hey, like 'em or not, we're stuck with Carr now. Carr's debatable, the O-Line is unquestionably horrific. If Carr sucks, we'll be able to see it when he actually has some of the tools qb's are given to work with. Right now if the Texans were going to draft a qb they'd have to take Vince Young 'cause he's the only one who might be able to outrun a few of the sacks, of course we'd also have to be willing to be the only NFL team that never throws a pass. I think unquestionably we have to stick with Carr for at least one more season.

Haha. Normally yes. But this isnt a normal year. But I wouldnt expect the Texans to follow the advice. That would be too boring of a day for CC.

Well I had a birdseye view of Troy as QB and I can tell you for a career you can label him "GREAT". When he started it was tough sledding but once that team got built the way Jimmy wanted to Troy became the perfect QB for that system and as far as Emmitt goes I won't get into who's the best, the fastest, who could have done this there or this with another team.

All I know is Emmitt was durable, he was a money player and he set records. He did more than anybody could have ever expected from him.

And as for Troy they haven't been able to replace him still 5 years after he's gone. That speaks volumes.
