Eric Winston elected as President of the NFL Players Association

Quote:
Eric Winston was elected as President of the NFL Players Association today.

What is D. Smith? Or is caveman replacing him?

Winston is a smart and articulate guy who is also apparently a capable politician, though I'm unsure what benefits this job offers Winston unless its another line on his resume which might help his career after football ?

Winston will be in front of the cameras as much as he can. He's a smart guy, but, I have rarely seen someone so blatantly seek the spotlight as much as that guy. If you ever wonder where to find Eric Winston, just look for the TV cameras.

I have never understood this complaint about Winston. All he ever did was respond to media requests.

People behave as if he was putting the Texans second by being on the radio while all the other Texans were studiously in the film room when for all we know they were at home playing naked dunking for Twinkies.

Eric Winston gives me the feel of a guy who cares more about his post NFL career more than his current NFL career. I guess kissing the media's but and clubhouse lawyering pays off. Great Job Eric your getting what you always wanted.

What did he ever do that was clubhouse lawyering?

Neither have I. His were the more informative player interviews I heard anywhere. Played pretty well here, filled leadership void on offensive side, smart articulate guy with a plan. More power to him as his career winds down, imo.

I don't have a link to prove Winston was a clubhouse lawyer, although I did here on the Koch/Kalu show that there was some of this in the Texans lockerroom. I do know that to become a player rep you have to part politician.

The next CBA negotiations should be interesting with Winston involved. That is, if he has the manbag to take a stand on topics he talked so much about during the last lockout. I think he does, which leads me to believe the next negotiations won't be easy either

Eric's got a face for Radio..... needs to keep it there.

I know that Winston right now is technically a FA, but at some point doesn't he have to become an active player under contract to one or the league teams again, or can he continue in this role as Prez of the NFL Players Association indefinitely while being a free agent ?

No, current and retired players are a part of the executive committee. I believe Charlie Batch, Drew Brees, Brian Dawkins, Scott Fujita, Matt Hasselbeck, Matt Light, Brandon Moore, Jeff Saturday, Brian Waters, and Benjamin Watson are the existing committee

Eric Winston would like to sign with team before draft; LINK

While he’s protecting the interests of the league’s players as a group, he’d like to be advancing the interests of one team as a member of their offensive line. Winston would like to return for another year in the desert, although he knows that might not be possible. Whether it is in Arizona or elsewhere, Winston would like to sign before the draft in May.

“I can’t say there have been super-positive talks or anything like that,” Winston said, via Dan Bickley of the Arizona Republic. “It doesn’t seem like anything is being done. I’d still love to come back to Arizona. I love the guys in the locker room, love the city, and I think the team will be really good with or without me. They’re ready to have a special run out there. At the same time, it is what it is. I’m looking to get on a team as soon as possible, hopefully before the draft. I know I still have some miles left on the tires, and I’m looking to burn them off.”

Winston likes to talk and share his opinions with the media.

I wouldn't be surprised if teams are a little gun shy about having him on their team. President of NFLPA + likes to talk to media...

It's like having Joan Rivers in your room watching you get dressed to go out somewhere.

They mentioned on the radio that Winston has started 16 games every season since he was drafted in 2007. The dude is like a cat and always seems to land on his feet.

Good luck with the Seahawks, EW!

I dunno why so long to get a contract, his skills diminished that much or are teams that concerned about having an outspoken player advocate & NFLPA union Prez in the LR ?

That... or he never was that good to begin with. We didn't "see it" because he wasn't the worst player on our 46 man roster. Pretty good run blocker, especially on the play-side. Average to poor everywhere else.

The worst part of it all is that he never seemed too concerned with getting better.

I've never understood the undying love for Winston. There's a reason he keeps getting cut after a year. He's OK. The other teams upgraded or spent less on RT. We just downgraded and spent less lol.

He's only been cut after one year once - with the Chiefs. He was with the Texans for 6 years, and he only signed a one year contract with the Cardinals, so he wasn't actually cut there. :kitten:

i really dont think winston is as bad as some claim. he certainly had holes in his game, but compared to the other right tackles i see each week he was one of the better players. i'd love to hear what coaches and managers really think, because i get the feeling that there's more than what he does on the field that is turning teams away. is it what many have called being a "locker room lawyer" that is putting teams off? a poor work ethic, focused on his roles after his playing career? is he asking for more than he's worth? or is he just not good enough?

As you said he is not as bad as folks make out. He was only in KC for a year because there was a regime and system change when Crennel got canned. AZ was always a temp gig.

yep. I don't get the hate toward the guy, but it could be a reaction to his media presence.

He was certainly better than 2013 Derek Newton.

If we cut Derek Newton, I doubt anyone would pick him up... so in that respect, yeah. Winston is good enough that he's managed to stay in the league 8 seasons?? as a starter & will probably stick around many years as a back up.

However, I'm glad we had Newton in 2013. With Newton, there's no doubt that we have to address the RT position. The Texans didn't address it as aggressively as many of us hoped, but... that's another story.

With Winston, he would have been "good enough" & that's not good enough.

& Yeah, perhaps there is a little more venom in my rhetoric than is deserved, but he was so overhyped when he was here & it's only been tempered a bit since he left.

I'm pretty sure another team would take Newton pretty quickly. Despite his ability level from last year, he has a lot of game experience.

But I think we'll see a better RT this year with Newton.

I think it's pretty clear that he's not the player he once was. The years have taken their toll. Winston was one of the better performing athletic OL to perform at the NFL Combine. He has lost his speed and lateral quickness. Or as they like to say, he's a step slower. He's restructured knee may be giving out.

Bengals tackle Eric Winston was unanimously re-elected for his third term as NFLPA president, the organization announced Sunday.

Winston has been the NFLPA president since 2014, having already served two two-year terms.

This term could be particularly important for Winston because is he can get an extension on the current Collective Bargaining Agreement, it would decrease the chances of another lockout.

The league's current CBA expires in 2021, so it is likely that during the next NFLPA presidential term, there will be another lockout. Winston, however, will not be eligible to run for NFLPA president for that term if he doesn't play during the 2019 season, he said on PFT Live.

I think it' safe to say that Winston has found his niche. I didn't even know he was sill active as a player but apparently he plays just enough to qualify as a player rep or pres of the union.

Always knew Winston cared more about clubhouse lawyering than improving his game.

No NFL team should sign him.

No, just made up with no basis.

Really, have you listened to him on the radio, or how much has he improved from his rookie yr to now? Football has been nothing but a means to an end for him.

Answer, not much, hearing Winston whine about the great Chiefs fans after Winston missed the block that got Cassel hurt should tell you all you need to know about him. Most people would have shut their mouths and hung their heads for getting Cassel hurt. But not Winston, nope, he uses the fans to deflect/change the subject ( Something you can relate too) to try to help cover for his failure. (Something typical in courtrooms all across America)
