ESPNews reports Tennessee Titans RB Eddie George has asked the team to release him.

Associated Press
NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- Eddie George, Tennessee's all-time leading rusher, rejected the Titans' latest contract offer Monday and asked the team to release him quickly so he can seek a job with a new team.

George and Lamont Smith, his agent, considered the Titans' offer over the weekend, but the proposal had not changed significantly from what the team initially offered in March."I'm not accepting it," George told The Associated Press on Monday night. "My expectation when making the decision is to be released. At that point, I'm looking at other options."

Smith said he told the Titans earlier Monday that George had rejected the offer and wanted to be released. He was told that team officials wanted to "kick it around" and get back to them. "Eddie was clear to me -- no more discussions," Smith said. "There's nothing else to discuss." A Titans spokesman had no immediate comment Monday night.

Owner Bud Adams said in May that he was "pessimistic" that a new deal could be reached, although general manager Floyd Reese said last week that the team remained hopeful. "I guess in a way they are trying to point me out to be the bad guy," George said. "I'm not being greedy. I've always tried to help this organization win. That's all I've wanted is to help this organization win and be the best I could possibly be and earn a decent living, and get paid what the market value's supposed to be."

George is under contract through 2006 and was due to make $4.25 million this season. The Titans asked him in February to rework his contract and paid him a $1 million roster bonus in March. But the salary cap-strapped Titans, whose woes are only expected to worsen in 2005, need to clear space to sign their 13 draft picks before training camp starts July 31.

Smith said they gave the Titans a counteroffer two to three months ago that would have shaved $3 million from their salary cap, only to see team officials stick close to a proposal of approximately $1.5 million this season with less money each year through 2006. "In essence, the deal we had on the table doesn't assure me of anything but a one-year deal," George said. "I don't plan on retiring after next year."

George attended the team's offseason minicamps as he recovered from arthroscopic surgeries on his right knee and left ankle. But NFL teams start opening camps over the next two weeks. He has a franchise-best 10,009 yards, and he has never missed a start since the franchise drafted the 1995 Heisman Trophy winner out of Ohio State. His 112 consecutive starts are behind only Walter Payton (170) and Ricky Watters (114).

George, who turns 31 in September, spoke of Tampa Bay, Philadelphia and Dallas as potential options and said he wants to join a team with a chance of winning a Super Bowl if he leaves Tennessee. "Change may be good," George said of playing for a different team. "I hate to sever the ties here. My first and only option was to finish a Tennessee Titan under fair circumstances. Unfortunately, that's not how I perceive it at this point. I look to move forward in a new situation."

George, who rushed for 1,031 yards last season, said his best season came in 2000 with fullback Lorenzo Neal as his blocker. The Titans have evolved into an offense that now looks to pass first behind Steve McNair, who was named co-MVP last season after leading the NFL with a quarterback rating of 100.4.

Both George and Smith said the Titans never made upgrading the offensive line a priority in the draft, preferring to let Hall of Fame lineman Mike Munchak coach low picks into shape."The priority for me to be successful wasn't a high priority on their list," George said. Releasing George would leave the Titans with second-year rusher Chris Brown, veteran Robert Holcombe and rookies Troy Fleming, Vick King and Jarrett Payton at running back. Brown rushed for 221 yards last year, averaging 3.9 yards per carry. George averaged 3.3 yards a carry and had five touchdowns.

Smith said he used Carolina running back Stephen Davis to help gauge George's market value. Davis, like George, entered the league in 1996, and signed a five-year deal worth $15.5 million including a $2.5 million signing bonus last year.

This is a shame. I was hoping the Titans were dumb enough to pay the money to keep him. I guess he'll have to grind out 2.5 yards per carry this year for some other sucker of a team willing to take him.

That means Chris Brown will be the starter? It seems like he had a fumble problem at Colorado, if I remember correctly.

they say that he's interrested in the bucs, eaglez, or boyz. westbrook looks to take it up a notch in philly [who also has buckhalter] and the bucs already signed an aging rb in garner. bp has put alot on jones in dallas, but that could change quick if he falters. dallas might be a good place 4 him. dunno. the gm is passing him up, like most rbz.

Oh the reality and pain when it all sets in...
taking the bruised ego from the Titans and their measly 1.5 mil offer over to the Cowboys and their 1.5 mil offer... does that make it all better? :hmmm:
I think he made a mistake in that move, but probably had himself in such a position that he couldn't go back.
Maybe that star on the helmet will look better than the flaming meatball.

Oh, heck yeah! I am delighted at the possibility of Eddie joining the Cowboys, and hopefully he will remain healthy, do well and help Julius Jones any way he can in his development.

Even though the Titans made the offer to keep him at a reduced salary, I thought that Bud Adams said several months ago that Eddie either wouldn't be back this season or that he didn't expect him to return.

Ill be delighted if George joins the Cowboys. If we could get like a 1.5 million 1 year contract that would be great

Seems funny to me that Cowboys fans would be excited to get an aging RB who has lost a step and averaged 3.3 ypc after getting rid of an aging RB who had lost a step and averaged 3.8 ypc.

Eddie George 2003
2003 Tennessee Titans 16 Games 16 GS 312 Carries 1031 yds 3.3 ypc 27 Long 5 Td's 2 20+ 52 1st downs 22 rec. 163 yds

Emmitt Smith 2002
2002 Dallas Cowboys 16 Games 16 GS 254 Carries 975 yds 3.8 ypc 30 Long 5 TD's 5 20+yds 48 1st Downs 16 rec. 89 yds

So let me see, Emmitt had better ypc and was more of a threat to break longer runs--sure does make sense to me.

I need to go back and check some information, but if I recall correctly, Emmitt was offered an opportunity to remain with the Cowboys, but with a significant cut in salary, which he declined. I can certainly understand Emmitt's position from a financial standpoint, and suspect that Eddie George was in a similar situation in Tennessee. IMO, we could use a veteran running back while Julius Jones is gaining experience, as well as additional insurance in case of injury. Personally, I hope that T-Ham does well with his new team, and I wish him the best, but at the same time I am relieved that I won't have the anxiety of depending on him for moving the sticks.

If you call it an offer--they offered league minimum.

I read that it Emmitt was offered more than the league's minimum, but still significantly less than what he would be offered by another team interested in him joining their team. My guess that his offer was possibly similar to the Titans offer to Eddie George.

It was th league minimum but with the money the Cowboys owed him it would have ended up being a little over a mil less than what the Cards gave him.

Could have made around a mil less and retire a Cowboy or go the Cards who he played twice a year and knew what the organization they were. He made his choice and now he's paying for it.

He's a great "safety net" so to speak for Julius Jones.

You don't offer the all time leading rusher NFL minimum. That's classless. You either offer something more, like say the $1.5 mil they are reportedly offering a back averaging half a yard less per carry or you say Emmitt we just think we need to part ways we are going to release you, i.e. no offer is better than an insulting one.

Well, thanks God, we have a very smart General Manager, and we don't have to stand George one more season.

Now is Cowgirl's turn to stand him

If Eddie Goerge has had something between 6-8 games, of 100+ yards last year, then the Titans GM, would have respected the 4.5 million, that was on his contract.

But with a very shamful 2003 season, with just 2 games with 100+ yards, plus his lack of commitment to the team, showed in the last 3 seasons, George was the first responsable of his destiny in that matter.

Thanks God, he is gone!
