Eagles Trades

Does anyone have details on the Eagles' trades of Maxwell and Murray.

As I understood it, the trading team (Eagles) would be required to eat the guaranteed money and that would convert to dead money against their salary cap. Those 2 right there seemed like they would be EXTREMELY difficult to move because of their guaranteed money owed to them.

Yet, they have been moved.

Can someone explain to me why I am incorrect in how I thought this works and clear that up that has a true understanding of how this works?

Also trade details (if one can find them) showing who is eating what guaranteed money as dead money would be great as well.

Thank you for your time, help, and education.

Look up the player on spotrac and they will have the dead money for cutting/trading them. The new team will Bay the base salaries and any bonuses to be paid after the trade date.

Haven't heard the draft picks traded.

That's where many of my questions come from. For example let's take Maxwell...

His contract as I understood it had 2016 base salary guaranteed. That's $8.5 M. I understood it that the Eagles would have to eat this as dead money in order to move him. Under Spotrac's dead money area they say the Eagles only owe $4.8 M in dead money. What happened there?

Now we have the roster bonuses. Are these all voided? If they are then where is the rest of his "guaranteed money" at? He was owed $25 M guaranteed. As I understand it he was only paid $8.7 M last year. Where is the rest of this guaranteed money going?

No. That money has not been paid before the trade and therefore will now be guaranteed by the new team.

No the are not voided. The ones which have not been paid yet are not the obligation of the new team.

Everything hinges on paid before or after the trade date. Dead money is money which has already been paid but has not yet appeared on the team's cap accounting. So say a $15 mil signing bonus is paid on a 5 years contract - the team will account for $3 mil on each year of the contract. Continuing the scenario - $3 mil roster bonuses are due in years 2 and 3. Team A trades to team B after year 2. It will look like this:

Year 1 - team A, pays 12 plus base, accounts 3 plus base.

Year 2 - team A, pays 3 plus base, accounts 6 (3 signing plus 3 roster)

Year 3 - team A takes a dead money charge of 9 mil (3 years of 3 mil per proration.

Team B - pays and accounts 3 plus base (still had to pay the new roster bonus but not account for any of the signing bonus).

Cool, thanks for your help.

Just to confirm then so I can ensure I am understanding completely...

Team A is basically trading roster bonus' that have not been paid yet as they are guaranteed if he is still on this contract (not cut / retired), therefore these are now the obligation of Team B. Also, since one of the years' base salaries was guaranteed then Team B is taking on this as well in the contract.

Team A IS however on the hook for things like signing bonus' that have not been paid yet. These will account against the dead money cap.

Any and all terms which were not to have been fulfilled by the trade date are now the obligation of the new team. So if 2016 base salary was guaranteed, it still is.

Signing bonus is paid in full at signing. Only the accounting is spread out.

Yeah no doubt. That's what I care about anyways. Cap space and dead money. I don't really care how Player X receives money from Team Y.

Thanks again man.
