Dropoff in CB's and RB's

Obviously, we have need for both CB's and RB's.

As to CB's, it appears that Hayden and Wilson are regarded as two CB's that are first round worthy, with Wilson possibly sliding to early 2nd round. After that, you have a pack of CB's that folks are debating but they range from 2nd to 4th round grades, depending on which CB and who's opinion.

As to RB's, it is similar. Spiller and Matthews appear to have clear 1st round grades, with Matthews possibly sliding to early 2nd round. Thereafter, there are several names like Gerhart, Dixon, Tate, Dwyer, Best that all have grades in the 2-4 rounds.

Here's my question: Which pack is stronger after the top two rated players, CB's or RB's? Personally, I think the separation between Matthews and the other RB's is greater than that between Wilson and the other CB.s

Rick Smith's answer to that question may dictate whether we go CB or RB in the first round.
 
I think the Cornerback class is definitely deeper this year. That typically means you can get a pretty good player, possibly starter, later in the draft. With that said, I think we'd be insane to pass on Kyle Wilson (if we think he is the real deal) just because we might get a guy later in the draft.

Also, this is heavily dependent on the team's scheme. There may be half the cornerback class that just wouldn't do well in our defense. So while the draftniks may have 10 CB's listed as 1st/2nd round talents and that we could get one in the 3rd or 4th round b/c its so deep, you have to account for those guys that might not even be on our draft board. The guys we may be interested in may all go by round 2.

The thing is, after a bad combine, Haden could drop to us. A lot of mocks have him dropping to us.

I'm personally wanting Matthews at that spot but it would be hard to pass up Haden.

I generally value CB over RB, all things equal. However, my sense is that Matthews grades out higher, particularly considering that there is no second back that clearly meets our one cut system.

It seems that there are several corners that fit the profile we want -- good at coverage but must be a willing tackler against the run.

I'm also of the camp that we need to sieze the day and win now if at all possible, and Matthews would make a greater impact IMO from day 1.
 
Given a choice between Mathews and Ghee,Roninson Franks or

Thomas and Hardesty,Tate and Gerhart. I will take Thomas and Hardesty. I've got Hardesty as my no.2 ranked RB. He could end up being better than Mathews and should be available in the 2nd rd.

Then they can draft Cox who has fallen (character Concerns) or one my favorite CB's in the 3rd rd Amare Spievey. One of these should be there in the 3rd rd.

If the draft falls this way the Secondary will be fixed and a dependable RB will be on board. This team should be much improved.

Personally, I consider that a huge myth.

Most of the top 15 rushing totals are delivered by guys who were drafted in the 1st round. If you expand that to the first 3 rounds, you cover almost all of them.

It's fairly rare for a low draft pick or an UDFA to finish in the top 15. That's not to say it doesn't happen. But if you're pinning your hopes on getting good production out of a guy drafted after the 3rd round OR picked up as an UDFA, then you're almost certainly doomed to failure.

Yeah, RB is a position that takes a beating and doesn't last long. But instead of that meaning that you should draft low and not spend much money on the position, that means that you just have to prepare yourself to redraft that position high every few years.

I hope we draft one of the top RB prospects. I want Ryan Matthews at #20.
