Drew Brees

If the Chargers let him go as expected, and he isn't sought after too strongly, should we consider him to push Carr for the starting spot? He is a probowler and is hot as of late. If we could get him, how much would he want, and is he worth it?

He could be a good pick-up. Cost would be the issue. He may get other offers more appealing than here though.

He'll go somewhere to compete for the starting job. It would make little sense for us to get someone to compete with David next year....... if David doesn't win, then we've just signed the untradeable....

More than likely, Jerry Jones would pick him up.... he may actually win the starting job over Drew Bledsoe... if not, Bledsoe would be darn lucky to play all 16 games next year..... injuries and what not.

You want to sign Brees to "push Carr?" You're a funny guy. You're a laugh riot. Push Carr. That's a good one.

well when has Carr had to compete for his job? Maybe with a little competition he might be driven to improve his play. And even if he can't be pushed, then Brees is the starter. Looks to me like a win win situation. Plus, with the beating Carr's received the past 4 years, if he went down, you dont have to put in ole Tony Banks.

Cost will be the issue w/ any QB that is capable of competing w/ Carr for the starting spot. It wouldn't be so much of a problem if we hadn't agreed to pay so much to a QB that has only performed mediocre at best so far.

haha this is ridiculous. Brees is a proven Pro-Bowl QB. Carr is a mediocre starter. If anything, we'd be signing Brees and putting Carr as the #2. And by the way, Brees will command quite a hefty sum of money. If he wouldn't, the Chargers would keep him. He will go somewhere where he can #1 get lots of $$, #2 get lots of playing time and #3 win a superbowl. We cannot offer any of those

I agree that Carr never had to compete for his job in year 1 and 2. By year three you could throw competition out the door as the job was his. Moreover, Brees would be very expensive and we just extended Carr. It does not make fiscal sense for Brees or the Texans.

Carr is our guy good, bad or indifferent. Just waiting on the good piece of the cliche to rear its head.

The thing is, he wouldn't be able to truly compete with Carr, because with his shoulder injury he may not be able to throw until June or July. Even if he could come back earlier, I'm not a fan of spending money on QBs with busted up shoulders...

I'd say that about sums it up right there.

In addition to all the comments made in all the post on this thread. Everyone should remember, Brees is coming off shoulder surgery and, while many believe he will make a full recovery, there are no guarantees when a player goes under the knife. Just ask Chad Pennington.

I doubt that that front office would go after Bress, I believe that the front office wants to see what Carr can do with a good offensive line.

we can't afford Brees, Brees wouldn't want to come to a place where he'd have to compete, he wouldn't wanna come to a place where he'd probably lose, and the hot spot for a QB to go to right now is Miami

It makes no sense for the Chargers to just let Brees go. If they didn't want him, then they would've just tagged him and traded him (there's no doubt they could get some value). The delay probably means they're still working on a deal.

The chances of him coming to Houston are even smaller. He'd command too much money to attract him. After all, who'd want to play behind this line? It doesn't make fiscal sense for the Texans as they'd have too much pay in the QB position. As demonstrated by Arizona and Detroit this year, QB carousels don't work.

If you want to push carr, draft vince young.
Just do what the Chargers did.

The Chargers never intended to do what the Chargers did and the cap effects were far different. When they drafted Rivers, Brees was playing a 2nd round rookie contract so he was hitting the cap for under $1 mil per year. Combined for Brees and Rivers the Chargers got hit that 1st year for less than either Carr or Young would count on the cap next year. Some reports at the time sais Rivers had the position locked up before stepping on the field but then he held out and cost himself two years of starting. They can't or won't keep going with the kind of financial commitment Carr+Young would be and so appear to be ready to let Brees sign a contract elsewhere now as a FA.

agreed but you can't compare Brees to Vince Young & from what I've seen of Rivers he doesn't even compare to Carr. Did the Brees/Rivers combo work? yes it did but the Chargers missed a great opportunity to get substantial trade value via Brees if Rivers was to be the man. I would hope the Texans if they had the chance would not make the same mistake, so Vince Young would be our franchise QB and we would have an extra #1 pick and/or qualtiy veteren player in exchange for David Carr, this deal should not be held back because of a two or three year cap hit, thats why McNair pays the big bucks to Casserly & staff.
