Drew Brees for a year?

I just thought I'd throw this out there.

New Orleans is in Cap Hades. It is already $20m over cap in 2015 without the draft. The biggest potential cap relief is Drew Brees being released after June 1st giving New Orleans $11M in relief out of the $18M cap hit. For some reason a trade or early release offers no relief at all according to OTC.

Since New Orleans has a relatively early draft pick and an opportunity to draft one of the top three QBs (most likely 1 will be left), It is possible they might consider doing the unthinkable .

What would you think of picking up an aging elite QB in the event that Mallett signs elsewhere? Would you focus on Mallett if Brees was available?
 
Who do you have as the top 3 QB's?

I don't think there's a chance in hell that the Saints jettison Brees. He's a god in that town

This. Dude had a another great year. The D is the huge problem over there. You don't get rid of your best piece to improve.
 
Not happening. If the Saints cut Brees then they can look for a new HC as well because Payton would probably resign.
 
I doubt the Saints pull that trigger, too much has been invested in "Lil Breesy", "Cool Brees" , and other Brees pun merchandise.

I would definitely take him though, just not holding my breath.
 
Marshall what did you wake up and smoke this morning that made you think that NO is going to consider getting rid of Brees after one lack luster season when he's been one of the best QB's of all time for like 8 years? Brees is going nowhere.
 
If Brees is ditched and the money is available then of course I'd sign him. Low maintenance high reward.
 
After Manning's 4 pick day the Broncos might cut him. All we'd need to get out of Brady, Brees and Manning is 6 games each.

Trade for Fitz for a lineup of Fitz AJ and Hopkins, then Foster and AP in the backfield.

Arizona needs a QB. With our new abundance of QBs we could easily send them our Fitz. Fitz for Fitz! I doubt anyone would notice.
 
I said it was unthinkable - until you look at the CAP situation in New Orleans. Even then it IS a long shot. But at what point does New Orleans decide to do a total rebuild? When do they run out of choices?

I'm always sober. But that doesn't hinder thinking outside the box. New Orleans is faced with only BAD choices and moving a 35 year old QB has to at least be a consideration.

The question is whether we would have the time to have him learn the system before he goes on his inevitable decline. He's either just past his peak or at it so I wouldn't expect any better than what we've already seen. But this IS admittedly like thinking about what you would do if you won the lottery only with a much higher probability. Maybe 1:100 rather than 1:150,000,000.

Just remember New Orleans is facing a $30M greater CAP problem than the one we have and that is evidence for some of disastrous CAP management.

They are not going to get rid of Brees man. He has been NFL gold for far to many years. You take him off this franchise and they are the Saints of old that no one even thought about.
 
we got rick smith and OB im sure if Peyton and brady brees and Rodgers were all cut today they would so no intrest
 
Brees is about through. I'd say sign him for 1 year if they aren't going to draft one in 1st round.
