Draft Ideas. (Tell me what you think)

I have been looking at some needs for the Texans and have put them down on paper. These are some of the more pressing needs IMO.

Seth Payne is Injured. Not sure if they plan on asking him back.
Aaron Glenn is slowing down. Or had a down year.
Bennie Joppru Might not come back. Might.
Mckinney seems to be getting pushed around a little too much.
Domanick Davis needs help. Wells has come on strong this year.

Now in this senario we would drop down to around the 20th pick, and gain an extra 2nd.

1. (20) Marcus Spears, DE, L.S.U.
2. (45) Haloti Ngata, DT, Oregon
2. (52) Alex Smith, TE, Stanford
3. (73) Cedric Houston, RB, Tennessee
3. (77) Jason Brown, C, North Carolina

Trading down to around 20, would allow us to pick up and extra 2nd, and snag Spears with the 1st round pick. This would allow us to slide Smith over to NT, and keep Payne or release him and have Ngata as a backup. And then stick the huge DE from LSU over to DE.

Alex Smith is Joppru Insurance. Plus he is a fine player. Not a great blocker though.

Cedric Houston is a fine player, and with a deep draft of RB's would still be available in the 3rd.

Jason Brown would give us a stronger presence in the middle of the line. One of the strongest players in the draft.

I like the idea, but do you think that the Texans would choose 2 d-linemen in a row, i would rather se us pick up a good CB at the end of the first and that DT in the second, or the d-lineman ion the 1st and a safety in the second.


Really like that Jason Brown idea (he is the only player I really hope we get in the draft) all the rest can be BPA's or something of that nature.

I would really like if the first 3 rounds played out in that manner, but I'm not so sure about the Cedric Houston pick. I love getting Spears in the late 1st, and I really like what I've seen of Alex Smith out of Stanford. His recieving skills seem to be better than his blocking skills, but he's a serious threat in the red zone. I would love to pick up Jason Brown in the late 3rd. If Spears slips to the second I'd be okay with picking up CB Rogers out of Auburn in the first, and then Spears early in the second. Then we could pick up DT Anthony Bryant late in the second day. Hopefully it will all play out like that in April.

Its hard to guess what they will do. Alot depends on who they get in FA. That will paint a better picture. But I know the DL is a major weakness, especially if Payne is released. Having a combo of Robaire Smith and Haloti Ngata would give the DL a major shot in the arm. And then having a HUGE DE like Spears on the outside would make that D-line one of the biggest, if not the biggest of any 3-4 in the league.

But like I said, until FA hits, its hard to see the needs in April.

I don't think we do anything major in FA though. We might sign a couple of well noted guys, but I don't think we spend any major money on a guy like Walter Jones at all. I think Casserly and Capers are still living on the phisophy that you get better though the draft.

With that said, I think we would be making a huge mistake on taking Spears in the 1st. Not on the player, just where we take him. I think he will still be up on the board in the 2nd. It could be a huge mistake for us to take a 2nd rounder with our 1st round pick. I say we stay at #13, because after this year this may be the highest or lowest whatever, we pick. We may be picking in the upper teens next year. I say we go for the BPA on our board at that point. Right now we still need talent, talent that will make a difference. I don't care if its Derrick Johson, Mike Williams, Carlos Rogers, or Jaamal Brown. I would be happy knowing that we probably got Top 10 talent with the #13 pick.

After that if Spears is available yeah go get him. I think this kid has talent, but right now his stock has slipped to 2nd round. It may rise again at the Combine I don't know. With our 2 3rds I think we can go after a linebacker, tight end, or another DL or someone in the secondary, it will depend what we do at #13. I think we get Eslinger in the 4th, maybe Gootegood in the 6th, and one of Casserly's crazy picks in the 7th.

I just think this draft could determine the direction we are going and I don't know how this is going to shape up...............

But what makes you think Carlos Rogers, or Jaamal Brown is a top 10 talent? I mean why are you against dropping down to get another 2nd round pick, and still getting a great player like Spears? He is huge, and would fit right in to the 3-4 defense.

I dont think Brown or Rogers is a top 10 talent.

I think with all the moves Casserly has done over the previous 3 drafts, it wouldn't be too far fetched to believe he would actually trade down. Especially to gain some of those picks back that we gave to Tenn to get back in the 1st round to get Jason Babin.

I like the way you think DC Rock. If we were to trade down to the 20th pick and if Ngata's knees show they are fine I would like him over Spears, Spears is projected as DE in a 3-4 scheme. I love the Jason Brown pick in the third. If his stock keeps rising he might go to a team in the second.

If we trade down, Spears probably won't make it past Green Bay, who is looking for a LE. So if that is the case I wouldn't mind taking Shawn Cody from USC, who could play DE for us since he was a good pass rusher as a DT. And with the higher 2nd take the best guard on the board, either Elton Brown or David Baas, since both are considered pure guards and pure guards hardly ever go in the first. (with the exception of Steve Huchinson, who when with the 17th.)

Payne will be back... I mean you just don't turn yourback on a player who got injured playing HARD on the last game of the season. Payne will be back 100% if not, then I will lose respect for Casserly. Just torn muscle, not like he busted his knee... pffttt... pass rush was like cow poo after Payne went down...and some of you folks wanna get rid of him?



Juppro might not be back! This instill fear like no other for next year.
If the Texan offense blossoms into its full potential, we will need a top tier tight ends. Not Backups like Breuner and Miller. We need somebody who can catch, but not get pushed around inside the 5 yard line.

McKinney is inadequate.... that being said...

I understand your opinin on Payne but how do you know he will be back 100%? What if he isn't then what? Who will play NT for us? We gotta treat this like a bussiness. The Texans have to try and make this team great and you won't do that with players who play really hard but can't give it a 100% on the field. Now that's if Payne is hurt and can't recover from his injuries. I like the guy. I think he displays leadership and guts and is what hard work is all about and I would like to see him returm at full streght but what if is all I am saying. Say he gets hurt again, do we have someone who can play NT and provide what Payne provides us?

unless something has changed since last I checked.. Ngata hadnt declared.. and rumor was that it was VERY unlikely that he was going to declare.

Makes sense too.. everything ive read about him alludes to the fact that he considers the NFL a goal, but not his calling. He wants to finish his College.. then go play in the NFL for a while before starting his career.

I really hope the Texans get a solid guard or center in this draft. I think Baas is a guy who could step in and play right away. He's also apparently a far better guard than center. I think injuries on the Michigan line forced him into the center job.

I've heard some people mention picking up another OLB in the later rounds of the second day, and I thought of a few guys that might be good pickups.

Jonathon Jackson DE Oklahoma 6'3 250 4.50

Adell Duckett DE Texas Tech 6'4 265 4.70

Ryan Riddle DE California 6'3 250 4.60

Bernard Thomas DE Nebraska 6'4 270 4.85

What most of these guys have in common is that they're undersized for NFL DE's, and they're excellent at rushing the passer. Most of them are from the Big 12 as well, but that's only a coincidence. Thomas is probably the better run stuffer, and he isn't as gifted at rushing the passer as the other guys. Riddle had 14.5 sacks as a senior, but he's inexperienced. Jackson has alot of quickness and speed, but he'd have to put on some muscle in the NFL. I think they'd all provide good depth, and would be great additions on special teams.

Another guy to put in that "tweener" category is Jonathan Goddard from Marshall. I saw him play earlier in the year against Georgia, and this guy outplayed Pollack. I don't know where he'll go in the draft, but he is someone I will definitely be watching.

Just checked on his stats and he had 28.5 tkl for loss and 16 sacks this season.
