In my last mock, I made the mock with the intent of a switch to a 3-4 D. This time around, I say, maybe we need to play to our strengths. This Defense WILL get better next year. Why? 1) Frank Bush is certainly gone. His replacement will certainly do better, I mean, there is no place to go but up. 2) Hopefully Barwin returns.
So, with that in mind, I found out that 22/24 teams that averaged 30.0ppg or more have made the playoffs. Currently the Texans are at 24.8. Perhaps, the easiest way to get into the playoffs is to focus on our strength and try to outscore other teams. So, that's what this mock is all about: trying to get the team from 24.8 ppg to 30.0+.
1. Jonathan Baldwin, WR, Pittsburgh. A perfect compliment to AJ. Think of Baldwin as Boldin to AJs Larry Fitz. Kevin Walter is a nice receiver, but he is not as skilled as Baldwin. Plus, Baldwin can learn a lot from a mentor like AJ.
2. Ryan Broyles, WR/PR, Oklahoma. Yep. Another receiver. But, he is the type of guy who could be great in the slot. Good hands, good speed, and a nightmare for LBs and Safteys. Put AJ on one side, Baldwin on the other, and Broyles in the middle? Wow. No more Jacoby jones dropping simple passes. With these two additions, Schaub now has fast, strong sure handed receivers to throw the ball to. All those drops from Walter and Jones are now gone. Plus, he can return punts. No more JJ will he drop it or not drama.
3. John Moffitt, G/C, Wisconsin: a massive road grading G/C combo player that can open up holes for the running game or give Schaub a few extra seconds to throw to our receiving corp. This is a key position change.
4. Derrell Johnson-Koulianos, WR/KR, Iowa. We can bring back 4 wr sets with him. Think back to the high powered offenses of the Run and Shoot. With all these rules that benefit the offense, such as Pass interference, its time to send 4 speedy receivers down the field and chuck the ol ball down the field. If you don't get a reception, you may get a pass interference play. DJK lets us do that. Plus he can also play in the slot or on the side and can handle KR duty. No more Steve Slaton's patented kickoff return to the 22 yard line.
5. Alex Henery, K, Nebraska: I have no problem with Rackers. BUT, this guy can consistently hit from 50+. Not all drives will end in tds. We need a guy who can boot them in from a LOOOONG way out to get to 30+ppg.
6. Derek Epperson, P, Baylor I know its high, but he is booting the ball 44+ yards. On those times we cannot score, it would be nice to make it a little tougher on the defense to score.
7. Charlie Gantt, TE, Michigan State: He is going to be what Anthony Hill was supposed to be: a tough inline extra blocker who can find catch every few games. He will provide additional pass coverage and can open up some additional running holes.
