Don't Waste #1 pick on Defensive low Impact Player

:foottap:Our biggest need is at Quarterback Position! A player that will have the greatest impact on the success or failure of the team. This is what the fans want and expect to get. Why in the world would you use the top pick in the draft on a defensive player that may make only 2 or 3 outstanding plays a game. NO that's not what we need. We need a quarterback that can spark this offense back to life and make things happen in short order.

We wholeheartedly agree!

I agree, we shouldn't spend a pick on a linebacker who will be in coverage on TEs, we should grab Clowney instead.

Such insightful, thought out and refreshing opinions. Nice to see some new take on this debate.

shhh! be vewwy, vewwy quiet. I think there is a wabbit here. :chickendance:

Actually, one of our greatest needs the last couple of years was more linebackers that can actually cover TEs.

Think Patriots...

That made my PP hurt ...

Repped. For hilarity.

But is the QB we need in this draft class? If you don't see a guy that you love and think will be your franchise player for the next 10 years, do you just roll the dice and hope a guy works out?

Or do you take a guy like Clowney or Mack who you think has the potential to be an All Pro every year?

To me, the biggest reason for not taking Manziel would be taking one of these other non-QBs and getting Bridgewater later. We might not even have to trade back up into the first, because it's sounding like he might be available @ 2-1.

because blaine gabbart was selected before jj watt. because 16 probowlers were taken in the first round after bradford. because jamarcus russell.

it's a few days before the draft so predictably the manziel fans are going to start showing up, but taking a quarterback just because he's a quarterback is often franchise crippling.

I think we should draft all the right players, coach them up well, get all the schemes right and make all the right game time decisions. Super bowl, baby!

I'd rather take my chances on having the foundation for the best defensive line for the next decade plus than rolling the dice on questionable QB prospects (regardless of how much I like Johnny Football).

A lot has to come down to where you expect the team to be picking next year. If you expect it's probably going to be closer to the top (which is what I expect as of right now), then I know a year from now I can hopefully take my QB of the future. If one of the top 3 or 4 QBs is the difference between making the playoffs and not, then maybe I go that route. I'm just not particularly sold on the fact that this is a playoff team with the holes currently on the roster - with or without a QB.

Long term, I feel like the better move is solidifying the defensive line as a terror for years to come and approaching next year's draft as the draft to get the franchise QB. Just my two cents.

I think you roll the dice and give the fans what they want. The local guy from Texas A&M.....Heisman Trophy Winner Johnny Manziel and see how it works out.

pshaw! Where is the suspense in that? Do you realize at #32 in 2015 we would have extremely weak draft talk?

Yeah, reaching for QB need seems to work out so well for everybody...People don't realize how much it can hurt you to reach, especially with #1 overall. Then you have to give them 2-3 years and potentially pass on better qbs because you have to give a guy time to grow.

Fans are often wrong and if there are no Ws eventually most will stop spending money regardless of who the players are. You select players you believe will get you wins not appease the fans. Wins will do that.

I think instead it will be better for the Texans to wait for the Browns to cut Vince Young, sign him and use the top pick on a player that will pan out. This way you can still see a college hero on the roster as a QB, giving many "fans" what they want with a local guy and no picks wasted!

:kitten:

We have 11 picks, we should just draft only QB's. One of those guys has to be 'the one' right? Seems foolproof IMO. We'll have our QB/spark and all will be right in the world.

Yeh that's the smart thing to do. Signed Vince Young and all his supporters.

When the GM listens to the fans , he gets fired.

(He should have been fired along with Kubiak)

So do many Aggies/Manziel fans go full on retard ala Horns/Young fans if the Texans don't draft him?

Like turn on the Texans, start calling them "NFL TU", show up to Reliant wearing Manziel jerseys of the other team, petition the TV station in Bryan College Station to start showing Manziel's team instead of the Texans, etc?

So nobody wants to draft a quarterback.. None of them a good enough this year. Guess everyone is happy with Fitzpatrick. Just wondering why he was a reject from the Rams then the Bengals then the Bills then the Titans. Now seems he's here to lead the Texans offense. How thrilling! Way to go RS.

None of us are saying we shouldn't draft a QB. Just that we shouldn't reach for one. Especially not reach for one just because a large group of low football IQ fans like him. Play the cards dealt to you.

Oh, I wouldn't say nobody. I would be pretty excited if they took Manziel. What I'm really hoping is that Bridgewater is still there at the start of round 2 and we get him AND whomever we took in the first round (Clowney/Mack/Robinson/Barr), OR we trade down and get Bortles and more...

There are QBs in this draft; there is just no sure-fire #1 overall QB.

You do realize that you can pick a QB in a rd other than 1-1 and other QB's will be drafted in the 2015 draft.

If Mario was the better version of Clowney, then I don't want Clowney. Mario had all the tools....and the heart of a lazy, fat cat.

But he does own a million dollar go fast boat...Big Bad Wolf.

Yeah, well. I've glad the Texans didn't give him a $100 million contract. Overall, he was OK, but not worth a #1-1 pick. Granted, neither were his competitors. Bunch a flops.

I'll always think about that every year around the draft. Hype, hype, hype....and who were the the big studs competing for the #1-1:

Mario Williams (can't get to the QB, but good otherwise), Vince Young (wonderlic says it all and then some), Bush (slot-receiver who eventuuuuuuuuuually turned out to be an average RB), Matt Leinart (couldn't keep a starting job, wound up with the Texans as a back-up, couldn't complete a pass for us beyond 5 yards, couldn't finish one game as a starter without getting injured).

What a buncha winners! :smiliepalm:
