Does the Brock decision change how teams draft qbs

So the theory used to be, when you had a good QB (like Brady, Manning, Favre, Brees etc) that a team drafts a Qb towards the end of the stars career and let them sit before they start. With Brock sticking it to Denver and leaving Denver with no viable starter, does this change how teams will view drafting a guy for the future so far in advance? With how free agency works, it isn't a for sure thing to retain your player for very long.

It will probably change the way Denver drafts. I bet Elway is kicking himself in the ass for not getting Os extended during the regular season as many NFL analysts have said, especially Pat Kirwin and Jim Miller.

Very rarely does a franchise type QB make it to free agency, just like most elite players don't either.

I don't buy that has been a predominant theory in the NFL. To the contrary flailing for a replacement is much more common than an apprenticeship and graduation.

I think teams may look to extend QBs before they get into the free agency year. Also taking a QB in the 1st round rather than later rounds would give the team an extra year to decide.

Yeah, that was my first impression as well. How many teams in the era of free agency have actually followed that plan?

SF with Montana/Young
GB with Favre/Rodgers
...

Marino to ? Kelly to ? Aikman to ? Even Bledsoe to Brady wasn't planned like it turned out. Manning to Luck may have been planned, but it wasn't laid out like the original premise. Brees to Rivers was a screw-up in talent evaluation rather than some plan. I think that plan would be preferable, but for the most part, the two examples I listed have been the only two in the modern free agency era to plan it and be ruthless enough to execute it. Most times that teams try it, they either cave in and start the replacement as a rookie or they let the vet linger on too long and fail to develop the prospect.

I think maybe Elway had that plan in mind with Osweiler, but he either mis-timed the execution of it (if you believe they won the SB with Manning and wouldn't have with Osweiler) and/or failed to make the switch when they could have. In either case, he failed to re-sign a guy that he supposedly had a role planned for.

That's a good question. But in Denver's defense they had no idea how long Manning would play. If they saw enough in Brock to be a franchise guy, you'd think they'd have forced Peyton to retire before the 2015 season the way Green Bay did. Sure, Peyton looked like he could play at the end of 2014, but the signs were there.

But it's there own fault for not getting him game time when Peyton gained a 20 point lead.

Then again, the Cowboys knew what they had in Romo before he ever saw the field.

I know we're saying, "But it's Peyton Manning." & they did win the Super Bowl. But ask yourself, WWBD? Bledsoe was pretty much Peyton Manning at the time.

You sure come up with some wacky stuff at times TK :D

Imagine they left Osweiler in the game, then through the playoffs & they failed to reach the Super Bowl. How many people would have honestly believed Peyton would've won it all?

I mean we all saw him struggle, we all acknowledged his skills had passed. I personally wouldn't have 2nd guessed it.

Elway gets my vote as the greatest of all QBs, but he's not the greatest GM though he's had some moments in that role and the least of which is not reeling in Manning a few years back after he left Indy. But he's stubbed his toe pretty badly with the way he handled this deal with Brock, luckily for us.
