DeMeco Ryans!!!!

the Texans get a couple more picks later today...and then three more tomorrow...don't tell anybody.
We ought to be able to pick up some real dadies with those. idonno:

On the positive side, I doubt they could be any worse than what we have there now.

Wow, I know it's an off the field accolade, but this is damn impressive...

Ryans was a four-time All-Academic SEC selection and was also a recipient of the prestigious NCAA Top VIII award, which recognizes outstanding achievement in athletics, scholarship and community service and is given each year to a total of eight student-athletes from Division I, II and III.

I'm starting to like this pick but, what does this mean to Babin and Peek?? Now we have a lot of LB's:confused:
Those guys are tweeners and not true linebackers...we needed a pure linebacker in the worst way.

I agree. And I like seeing an offensive mind like Kubiak making big decisions about defense early in his HC career. It shows a big picture mentality.

Damn I hope there are at least one O-Line pick this draft. David Carr, get redy to have another year of 70 sacks. Maybe our Defense is actually great but they just get wore out every game because our offense only has two drives a game with more than 4 snaps. I think this draft is such a bust. The LB just reasures us that Babin and pEEK are gone!

I think our shot at a starter calibur o-lineman has passed us. Anyone from here on out will only serve as depth and will noy be an upgrade over our current starters.

I think our coaching staff by themselves will make a difference in our OL

Same here, I've been trying to say that since they were hired.

We're fighting an uphill battle.

absolutly HORRIBLE pick!

Cant say that enough.

6'2 205 CB out there, Thomas Howard at OLB faster, better production, and we dont even think about it. Thanks Charlie for the continued crappy picks in the 2nd round

BTW WE NEED A MLB not MORE OLBs.

Most experts had Ryans as the better player. In fact, I cannot recall a mock, or expert ranking that had Howard as a better player than Ryans. I haven't seen Howard play a game, but the knock on him is he is not instinctive at all, and his raw speed and physical ability don't match his production. Ryans is sort of the opposite - he is highly instinctive, smart as a whip, very productive, and has a non stop motor. In fact in that regard, the Texans have sort of turned the tables. They usually pick the workout warriors over football players. Howard is the workout warrior in this case. The Texans, IF they are going LB here, made the correct choice imo in Ryans. Excellent LB, and he will help, along with Williams, etc, to make our front 7 into one of the better units. I think your critism is unfair in this case. Now, if you want to revisit the Williams pick......:ok:

I agree, but if you think about it, we have 4. Don't forget about Travis Johnson. I know some people are low on the guy, but moving back to his natural position which is going to allow him to attack and not just tie up blockers and playing next to Mario is going to work wonders for him.

IM LOVIN OUR PICKS!

our offense has the benefit of coach Kubes great offensive scheme

but our defense well lets just say our defense is gettin better by the pick!
I LUV KUBAIK :redtowel:

It looks like we are rebuilding our D almost from scratch. I really want to see some trades soon, because I can't imagine why we have certain players on our roster. We have Greenwood, Wong, Polk, Peek Babin, Orr. I'm not sure or how much we're paying these guys, but this cast needs to be thinned out.

Add in there Travis Johnson as well.

Yeah, you guys are right...I should have put in TJ as another young cornerstone type player. He was out of position last year.

SEC player of the years are usually pretty good football players.
He was the top LB on my own little vinny board at that time. Howard is a huge project. The other guy I'd have considered is D'Qwell Jackson. Howard gives me a Hollings vibe. Stiff project that is all measurables and no instinct. The Ryans pick is the exact opposite of the kind of guy I'm sick of drafting. We don't need any more workout warriors...we need some highly productive, instinctive, football players instead of projects and prototypes.

I agree. Mario = workout warrior DeMeco = football player

Great pick I had him at my trade down scenario at #29. #33 is even better. This guy is going to be a difference maker. Good to see we're making picks not based completely on athletic ability either.

I feel exactly the same way. Although I was sour on the Ryans pick at first, I like the fact that he got his stock by being productive instead of working out well. So I'm willing to give him a shot. That's not the same philosophy we used with Mario Williams though...

I'm a UTEP Miner fan, but Howard wasn't a top of the 2nd round pick. Middle of the 2nd at best. I haven't seen Ryans play, but Howard was not instinctive. He was very raw. He had talent, but watching the Miners on TV and one game in person, Howard wasn't even the best defensive player on the field. He didn't wow me. This Ryans kid has great credentials. I love this pick!

You folks will be very happy with Ryans at OLB. He was a steal for a 2nd round pick. He will be a perennial Pro Bowl LB in a couple of years, and he's a guy that will represent the Texans organization with nothing but class off the field. On the field, he is a very smart player who can and will make plays all over the field. He is also a natural leader.

Since we got Winston and Spencer with our two third round picks, I feel better about the Ryans pick. I felt at the time that it was a mistake to pass up O-line help, but since we still snagged Winston somehow a round later, it didn't really hurt our value drafting like I thought it would. I really think I get get on board with this Ryans fellow.

Alabama really did have one of the best defenses in the country last year, and those guys worked hard. I hope that translates for Demeco and he can be a playmaker for us.

I still hate the Mario pick, but this one I can definitely get behind.

Mario is not a workout warrior, he is a serious disciplined hard working footballer... who just happens to be a freak physical specimen.

Both of our defensive picks make us a better ball club.

In the 2nd rd. we picked Ryans was great!

My reaction went like this
1st Mario OK Reggie or Mario I'm happy.
2nd Ryans It is a great pick but what about Winston?
3rd Chester & Winston You mean we can draft Winston in the 3rd? Wow
4th Ko Simpson still available!! You got to be kidding me!!!

Sorry Not Chester Spencer that is

This guy was on my top 15 players list. I love him!

He will be a productive linbacker for us, for the next 10 years.

Houston Texans main web site has this to say:

In the past couple months, the Texans have added potentially four defensive starters, including Williams and Ryans as well as free agent linebacker Sam Cowart (Minnesota Vikings) and defensive end Anthony Weaver (Baltimore Ravens).

While he is slated to play outside linebacker, Ryans played all the linebacker positions at Alabama.

“I’m expecting him to come in and have an opportunity to start for our football team,” Kubiak said. “It’s going to be very competitive at that position for us, too.”

If u guys watched Texas Tech vs. Alabama last year, you would know that Demeco Ryans anchored a great defense vs. a top calibur collegiate offense.

I believe it was the number 3 ranked offense(texas tech) vs. the number 2 ranked defense(alabama), and alabama won 13-10.

I don't think he is as good as Ernie Sims are A.J Hawk, but he is certainly as good as Greenway or better.

This will prove to be the most surefire pick of the draft.

Forget the combine numbers. Ryans is a natural and a true playmaker.

Ryans also has NO character issues, and is highly intelligent. A VERY smart player.

Oh yeah; he hits like a Mack truck.

As a Bama fan (and very possibly a new Texans fan) I thought I'd offer some perspective on Meco as someone who's watched him alot the past 3 years.

Pros-

1) First off, Meco is a great human being. Hard worker, great leader, VERY smart player

2) He does not have great speed, but he rarely gets beat to corners. Why? He takes the right pursuit angle on every play.

3) BIG hitter. And not just big hits, he's a great tackler. One of the best I've ever seen at the college level. When you get to Ryans, you go down.

Cons-

1) He doesn't have great raw speed, and that can show up in pass coverage more than run stopping.

2) He could stand to add some weight.

All in all, there's a reason he's considered one of Bama's greatest LBs ever. Most fans hold him up there in the same breath as Derrick Thomas, Cornelius Bennett, and Lee Roy Jordan. He may not have ideal size/speed, but he's one of those guys who is always getting up off the bottom of the pile after he's made another tackle.

I love this pick, do you all think he could step right in and start?

hes definetly capable its going to be really interesting to see how the depth chart ends up being cause it seems for the 1st time we have more players worthy of being on the field than actual spots haha which is a great problem

See...this is the part that worries me. He's currently too small and too slow???? Ok, pack on some weight, then get slower?

(5-11 , 210, 4.65) Senior Year @ Alabama

(5-11 , 225, 4.39) This past season in the NFL

I mean it's a good amount of speed pick up and a small amount of size...but he's not doing half bad for himself in the big leagues.

Vinny said:
He starts from day one imo.

I agree with you. I don't know who he will beat out, but I don't have faith in Greenwood after last year. I know, different scheme, but he doesn't seem physical. He can't shed and got b-slapped by Verron Haynes. Worst b-slapping I've ever seen. :)

Remember the unknown comic on the Gong Show? Probably not, but Greenwood is the unknown linebacker.

DeMeco Ryans played OLB in College, but what if the Texans plan on making him their MLB? Lofa Tatupu is actually smaller and he's been awesome playing MLB. I was upset @ first with the pick cause the last thing the Texans needed was another OLB, but if he converts to MLB, he could be the most productive prospect next season :)

Well, I know Vinny and some others have mentioned this, and it's completely true - pretty much all of the OLBs on our roster are converted DE projects. It's nice to have a guy that actually played the position in college and has a big enough brain to rotate between positions if needed.
