If you've ever coached or been coached to play LB can you help me figure out this alignment.... it's from LZ's recent article.

If you watch the video, you have the SAM playing 5 yards from the ball, His outside foot lined up on the TEs inside foot. A DE is lined straight up on the TE.

The Mike is also 5 yards back he's lined up directly over the A gap. The Center is uncovered, the DT is lined up at 3 tech.

The WILL is lined up over the LT, 3 yards from the ball. The LT is uncovered, the DE is playing the 5 tech.

Why? Why is one LB 5 yards back another is 3 yards back? Why isn't one on the LOS? Outside the TE?

I know there is a whole lot that goes into the scheme, just trying to figure out what coaches are thinking with their LBs.

I can't exactly picture what you're saying, but the easy answer for why LB's would be farther or closer to the line is to either get up onto the LOS very quickly or to have more room to to see what's going on and make their move accordingly.

But it's not all on coaches. Some players feel more comfortable at certain depths...If a coach sees something like a player having trouble getting off blocks or not being able to see they might suggest he move back some.

It just depends on what a player is trying to do...
