DD Speculation

Pure Speculation

The latest rumor I have heard from someone close to the organization is that DD is likely to be cut as the Texans are pursuing Mike Anderson. According to the source the signing of Anderson also means the end of Jonathan Wells as a Texan unless he does not receive a higher offer on the FA market (as is expected). The team believes they can sign Anderson for a lower rate than what DD is currently costing the team, and obviously Kubiak knows that Anderson can do in his scheme. I am hearing Kubiak will call Anderson today/tomorrow at 12:00 a.m. at the start of the FA period.

There is also some interest in Trevor Pryce, but this has not been formerly discussed.

This makes absolutley no sense!!!:brickwall
Why would we release a young up-and-coming runningback for one that is 32 years old and probably has a couple of good years left in him. If kubiak wants to save money, they need to get rid of the dead weight....T.Wade,G.Walker

The reasoning behind the deal is that the Texans are leaning towards drafting Reggie Bush (however, still considering Mario Williams). Mike Anderson is a bigger back that would be a classic complement to Bush. The offense would be similar to Denver's Anderson and Tatum Bell duo. Additionally, Anderson's contract would be heavily insentive oriented so as to save the club money in the future. DD is owed a huge amount of money, if the team is going to draft Bush, cutting DD and signing Anderson to an insentive ladden contract makes since.

Didn't we already get rid of walker?

Regarding the original premis of the thread...that would make zero sense IMO. Take a cap hit, get rid of a solid young back and bring in a guy that's 32.

how about signing Anderson to use with Davis and Morency, then drafting VY.

sounds like a pretty sweet idea to me.

you didnt read? a source close to the team:rolleyes:

The source must be Mike & Mike from espn .... They were saying this morning that DD and a multitude of other high profile players thru-out the NFL could be cut .... but thats just speculation on their part .

The Texans are already $4 Million under the supposed cap if no new CBA is reached . DD isnt going to be cut .... forget it . Anderson May well be brought in but that would mean that the Texans probably WOULDNT be taking Bush and have some alternative plan for the draft .... D-Brick , V.Davis , V.Young , AJ.Hawk or M.Williams in some kind of trade down package.

Here's a list of the Texans players that ESPN said were possible cuts .....Their salary and how they would affect the cap. Players in BOLD would negatively affect the cap

Player.....................salary.......... cap hit.
Mark Bruener ........ $1,008,333.....$1,008,332 Savings
Marcus Coleman..... $3,118,433.......$585,299 Savings(Released)
Domanick Davis.....$3,800,000.....$200,000 Charge
Seth Payne............$4,225,000........$850,000 Savings
Todd Wade...........$5,166,666......$1,500,002 Charge
Gary Walker..........$5,833,333.......$1,500,001 Charge

From those only Coleman was released outright , Walker will be released June 1 to spread his cap hit over two seasons.

Of the 143 players ESPN has on their possible cut list only only 35 were cut . 36 Counting G.Walker on June 1. Thats 24.47% .... poor speculation .

Link http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=2341755

The only thing I would add to Corrosion's post is that their is speculation that if the a new CBA is reached the cap could go up anywhere from 5 mil to 10 mil. If that is the case you are more are likely to see those quality players, who did not perform to expectations under the former regime or were injured retained. Good cap managment and quality depth are hallmarks of good teams in the salary cap era.

Answer: The Moonies.

Question is: What do you call people that follow where ever rumors take them, even if it means speculation out their nether region?

Am I close?

bdiddy - heard the possibility as well on 610. I think there's gonna be quite a bit of big names released soon and we'll be wanting to grab them all (well, most).

Two things I'm not sure about - 1. the age and tradeoff as mentioned above. 2. while Kube does have the Denver ties, I don't think we'll be bringing all of Denver down here (unlike what Denver does to Cleveland). Besides, maybe I'm off - but didn't Kubiak said he liked what he saw in DD when he first joined the Texans?

What would be the difference between cutting him and trading him? I don't want to do either, but if we traded him couldn't we stay under the cap and get something back for him? I think he might be able to go for a late 2nd/early 3rd round pick.

just doesn't make sense to me...DD has trade value atleast...get a pick for him instead of just taking the cap hit...personally i don't understand why he and bush couldn't work together and be productive

Not to mention that the Texans took DD just before Denver could IIRC.

I heard if the talks broke off today that DD was going to get cut, to save cap space.

Doubt that happens. It would be dumb to cut a guy you just signed IMO.

You must remember trades are relatively rare in the NFL. The swaping of draft picks is common place, but the trading of players has on a relatively rare basis.

Also, DD is a good player but he is severely over paid. No team wants to assume his contract, especially considering the current salary cap/CBA situation.

I highly doubt that this happens. From what I understand with the CBA not extended teams are required to count incentive money against the cap, even incentives that are not likely to be achieved by the player. So I don't see how a contract full of incentives would help the Texans out at all. If we're looking to pickup a big back who'd make a nice compliment to Bush then I'd look more towards a guy like Duckett. However, I think DD would make a nice compliment to him as is. :twocents:

I'll do it in a heart beat (cut DD). You save money, you put another quality Rb on the market; makes Reggie Bush Value Drop. Makes Teams not want to move up and grab him.(Teams in Need of a RB). Make the trade with the Jets; Grab our extra picks and get Reggie Bush 4th overall. Brillant! :homer:

Cutting DD costs the Texans $200,000 against the cap if he's cut.... You still have to pay his replacement . If thats Bush at #1 thats about $9m per at #4 its probably closer to $7m per. DD is scheduled to make $3.8m this season ..... Where would you be saving money ?

Putting DD on the market in no way affects the value of R.Bush....If the Texans trade down with the Jets , which is highly unlikely considering they are $11.1M over the cap and have as many holes to fill as the Texans . They need more picks not less. They would likely target M.Williams or D-Brick at that spot ....There is a remote possibility that Bush could be there if the Titans take D-Brick..... But of the teams in the top 3 the Titans have the greatest need at RB.

I doubt a 3rd rounder. 4th/5th more likely if anything when you consider the bumper crop of available RB's and the inability of last year's RB's on the market to get traded.

Now tell me why on earth the Titans would trade up when they are in a win win situation at number 3 . They will have their choice of everyone in the draft minus Bush and Leinart If the Texans were targeting Bush .... Vince Young and D-Brick would both make the Titans happy.....They also have multiple holes to fill and probably wont be looking to move up..... They are also $18.7m over the cap. :hmmm:

John Clayton said earlier today that the CBA agreement debacle could affect the salaries of the top draft picks and they could make up to $10 million less in guaranteed money.

As it should be. This league really needs a rookie salary structure.

Titans Might Cut Mc Nair, Jets Pennington, Saints Brooks, Lienart is the most legit QB.. so one of them will fight for him to grab him, the others.. will take Cutler or Young.. cuz they will need a QB more so than a RB, since they'll be a Gang of good Backs in Free Agency and top of 2nd round (Drew). That's why the Texans would drop Davis in Free Agency, See what Teams in the top of the draft will sign free agent RB's. :homer:

He's not egregiously overpaid, but I don't see why any team would give up a first day pick, with plenty of good backs in the the draft. If you want an RB, this is the year. In FA, an elite guy won't cost you a whole lot more, and a comparable guy will cost you less. Player for player is possible if you want to trade him for an underperformer, like Williamson.

Some of you aren't getting the picture, I see.

Tomorrow (Thursday) is going to be ugly for every team if the CBA falls through. Good players that have very expensive contracts are going to be cut.

They aren't calling this 'Bloody Thursday for nothing.

“ People are going to be stunned -- not just by the quantity of players who are cut by Thursday but by the quality, too. It's going to be ugly. There's going to be blood in the streets and, compared to past years, it's going to be from some bluebloods, guys who can still play. ”

If we cut DD, then the Texans FO won't be able to fool anybody about their plans for the first overall pick. I doubt they cut him, at least before the draft.

But even a 4th/5th from a trade is better than nothing from a cut. You have to deal with the cap hit either way, might as well get something out of it. I still don't like the idea of losing him though.

Pure Speculation.

Team is backing off this proposal slightly, but several members of the Texans staff are still in favor of cutting DD. It looks like it will come down to the 9 p.m. deadline for a decision. As with all teams, a lot will depend on if the owners can get a deal done today.

As to DD costin $200,000 against the cap this year, you are correct, but beyond this year the Texans would reap large savings.

it seems as though it might be hard with so many rb's on the market

A trade would yeild some intrest because a team could get a young up and commer and we would pay a bulk of his contract. We would have to pay the bonus and they would get to play him for cracker jacks, were as with the big money RB's you have to out bid suitors and pay an arm and a leg.:twocents:

$200,000 is chump change. If that was all DD was going to cost us, I could see overlooking it in concern to the Cap. Mike Anderson vs DD, in a straight up trade, I would not make this deal........ saving $200,000 It's still very unlikely, but I would definitely look into it.

But I remember this thread from a little while back

Houston Texans Player's contracts

RBs
Domanick Davis......$3,806,160 to keep, $8,424,640 if cut/traded, 25 years old, signed thru 2009: Whether people like it or not we've signe him as our franchise RB.
Moran Norris..........$866,160 to keep, $412,320 if cut/traded, 27 years old, signed thru 2007: Keep him, I don't usually like spending that much on a FB but he's young and pretty good.
Jonathan Wells.......Unrestricted Free Agent, 26 years old: Keep him, he's a decent big, short-yardage back and a great special teams player, only made $662,160 this year so we should be able to sign him for a similar amount.
Tony Hollings.........$699,410 to keep, $239,410 if cut/traded, 24 years old, signed thru 2006: Not sure why we drafted him but he's hardly played, not even on special teams, and isn't worth keeping around. He's not earning much but won't cost much to cut and the roster spot could be used better elsewhere.
Vernand Morencey..$505,160 to keep, $390,320 if cut/traded, 25 years old, signed thru 2007: Keep him, a decent RB as a rookie and decent on special teams when used, if nothing else keep him thru his rookie contract and maybe get an additional draft pick as a restricted free agent in a couple years.

If we're talking $8million plus Anderson's salary, no way in @#$#

The way I read DD's situation is that he has 2.1 million allocated as bonus pay in 2006. I am not sure where the 200k number comes from that ESPN has. The only thing I can think of is that he may released after June 1st to spread the hit into the 2007 cap.

Without a CBA in place, there is no June 1st cut split available this off-season.

The $2.1 is the allocated bonus for this year if he is retained. If DD stays this year, his cap hit would be $1.7 mil base plus $2.1 mil allocated bonus for $3.8 mil total. If he were released today, the Texans would have to take the remainder of the $5 mil bonus which has been paid to him as dead money on the cap--about $4 mil (the numbers actually aren't this round but close enough). In terms of cap charges the comparison is $4 mil to get rid of him vs. $3.8 mil to keep him, or it costs $200k to get rid of him. FYI--the $2.1 mil in allocated bonus is based on the assumption that DD stays a Texan and receives another $3 mil bonus at some point this off-season.

So it'll cost $200,000 more to keep him. Either way, he counts ~ $4mil to the cap?? Ok......... I wouldn't do it, wouldn't cut DD to pick up Anderson.

Thank you, that makes sense. I do not see how we cut DD when we already have 3.2 million in dead money for 2006 when we cut Coleman, Banks and Hollings. If we do cut Walker that number will go up.
